Title: Chex Quest HD!
Post by: Chukker on April 18, 2016, 08:51:39 AM
Hello Chex fans! I've dropped by to deliver some great news.  Obviously this year we're celebrating the 20th anniversary of the release of Chex Quest. I've gotten so many requests to make something for the occasion, but a full-time job and family make finding time hard. However I have been quietly recruiting a few volunteers to help out with something I have pondered doing for a while now... creating a modern remake of the original Chex Quest! I'm pleased to say that it might actually happen! Here's some WiP screens of what we're calling Chex Quest HD:

We're building this in Unreal Engine 4, which is quite an amazing toolset. We don't have much to show yet, but we make little bits of progress each week. There are a few things that we could use the community's help with, since in some ways you know the original game better than we do.

- We would like to get a breakdown of how the sounds are used. If we could get a list of each sound by its Doom name (etc. DSBGACT) and what it is used for, that would be super helpful since we have to recreate all of the audio logic in Unreal.

- We would like to get some sort of technical writeup of the stats of all the various weapons, enemies and items if possible. Also any information about the underlying logic of how things like the pain chance and armor systems behave would also be useful. We may not stick to this precisely, but it will give us a great place to start from.

- If there are any download mirrors of my Chex Quest 3D models out there, please take them down and remove them from other projects. These are being used in Chex Quest HD and I'd rather not have them appearing elsewhere in the unfinished state that I released them in a while back.

I'll be checking the forums off and on, but must apologize if I can't respond to posts or messages. I'm actually finalling a game at work right now, making the next couple of months even busier than normal.

It is nice to see you back Chukker.

Is there any other help we can give you to help the project along?

I just posted this on Doomworld (https://www.doomworld.com/vb/doom-general/87356-chex-quest-hd-in-the-works-needs-good-info-on-doom-engine-inner-workings/), since those people are very knowledgeable in the inner workings of the doom engine. Give it time and I'm sure you'll find the answers you seek.yt?

EDIT: I also had a few questions! Is there going to be any kind of multiplayer for this? Do you eventually plan to finish the trilogy in this remake?  Are you going to expand past the original levels at all? And should this get popular enough, would you consider a spiritual successor for kickstarter?

Is this what you're looking for? https://github.com/rheit/zdoom/blob/master/wadsrc/static/filter/game-doomchex/sndinfo.txt

Quote
- We would like to get some sort of technical writeup of the stats of all the various weapons....

Hopefully this quick list will get you started, I'll try to verify some of this over the weekend for you, let me know if you need the rate of fire of these weapons.

Fist: does between 2 and 20 damage (http://zdoom.org/wiki/A_Punch)

Pistol: does 5, 10, or 15 damage, remember that the first shot is perfectly accurate, every shot after that has a horizontal spread of about 8 degrees (http://zdoom.org/wiki/A_FirePistol)

Shotgun shoots 7 puffs, does 5, 10, or 15 damage per puff , with a spread of about 8 degrees (http://zdoom.org/wiki/A_FireShotgun)

Chaingun Exactly the same as the pistol, except it fires faster and only shoots in 2 round bursts (http://zdoom.org/wiki/A_FireCGun)

Rocket Launcher See link (http://doomwiki.org/wiki/Rocket_launcher)

Plasma Gun Ball does 5 to 40 points of damage (http://zdoom.org/wiki/Classes:PlasmaBall)

BFG 9000: See link, remember: it's not just a an exploding projectile like the rocket or plasma ball is. (http://doomwiki.org/wiki/BFG9000)

QuoteAlso any information about the underlying logic of how things like the pain chance...

Each time an enemy is damaged, the engine picks a random number between 0 and 255.

If the random number is LESS than an enemy's painchance, the enemy enters their pain state.

So lower painchances mean that it's less likely that the enemy will be damaged.

For example:  the imp's painchance is 200 (http://zdoom.org/wiki/Classes:DoomImp), so that means that there's a 200 out of 255 chance (78.4 percent) that it will enter its pain state on a given hit.

Quote...and armor systems behave would also be useful.

Green armor (standard chex armor) absorbs 33% of damage (http://zdoom.org/wiki/Armor)

Blue armor (super chex armor) absorbs 50% of damage (http://zdoom.org/wiki/Classes:BlueArmor)

Armor bonuses absorb 33% of damage (http://zdoom.org/wiki/Classes:ArmorBonus)

Let me know if you need more information, and good luck with the project!

Thanks, 75, that will help a lot.

In response to some of the other questions:
Multiplayer - This won't be done initially. It requires a bunch of extra code for network play and programming is an area where we are in short supply.
Chex 2 & 3 - I probably won't consider this until the first is finished. Just getting Chex 1 done will be a lengthy undertaking given the small team.
Expanding beyond the original levels - No, the plan is to only include the original 5 levels. They all will however be re-designed. Most will end up being longer to play as a result.
Spiritual successor / kickstarter - Probably not, pursuing funding for game development would violate my non-compete agreement with my current employer.
Other help - I'll think about that. Doom/Chex Quest research and documentation are our biggest needs right now. Testing and bug tracking will be important later down the road. I'm not completely against anyone attempting to model and texture out some props for us, but I will be very selective about anything that goes into the game. It's important to our team that we maintain a minimal level of professional presentation to this project.

By the way, if you need any beta testers, I'd be able to put some time out of the week aside for this. I just got a new gaming rig and would love to have some games to try it out with.

Just wanted to mention, a few guys at doomworld (https://www.doomworld.com/vb/post/1592893) came up with some wiki pages that will give you more details on the weapons, enemies, etc.

Weapons page: http://doomwiki.org/wiki/Weapon#Doom
Monsters page: http://doomwiki.org/wiki/Monster#Doom
Items page: http://doomwiki.org/wiki/Item#Doom_games

Each one of these has links with a lot of detailed information about each enemy, weapon, etc.

About 10 or 11 months ago, Gorea, Flurb, Pikazec, Rushnerd, TMOB, and Atari showed up.
This month, Chukker shows up.
A couple days later, wayc shows up.
Now, Mob720 shows up.

Why do we have so many old members stopping by recently?

Andrew has given me a verbal "yes" to helping out. He's super busy with work, family and musical career on the side so how much he can do remains to be seen. I also have an industry collegue who does music and sound design and knows Unreal who has volunteered to help out.

Well, wayc is back to this forum after nearly 9 years (!) and he's gotten better at remixing so if he makes more song remixes and you have his permission, you should use those.

If I may...
Um, I don't know if this has been handled...
Bootspoon: Random between 1 and 5, multiplied by 3
Super Bootspork: Same but at the rapid speed of the Rapid Zorcher
Mini Zorcher: Same damage as bootspoon
Large Zorcher: Same damage as Bootspoon iterated 3 times, 1 for each puff
Rapid Zorcher: Same damage as Mini Zorcher at speed of Super Bootspork
Zorch Propulsor: Projectile damage of 20-160 with explosion calculation up to 128 damage at center, 128 map units out.
Phasing Zorcher: Projectile damage of 5-40
LAZ Device: A bit complicated. Initial projectile: 100-800 damage, each of the 40 'hitscan' rays causes 15 times a random between 1 and 8, i.e. 15-120.

...Not necessarily.
( I made a post earlier on this but it didn't actually post because my wireless stopped working just before I clicked post.)
I emailed Chukker about the CQ2 intro over 2 years ago (!) and this was his response (email addresses and my name blurred out for privacy reasons:)
He said he no longer had it. That is either a confirmation of its existence or poor wording on his part, and I'm guessing the first one. I think it's the first one because I know in another way that it probably did exist. Basically, I asked my brother who played CQ when it came out if there was ever an intro for the second one. He said he vaguely remembered one but didn't remember what was in it. I told him how a member of the forums who remembered the intro had described it, and he said that sounded familiar. So, two pretty convincing and firm bits of evidence that it exists is enough for me.
EDIT: Later I messaged Chukker about that actually being his email. Turns out it is, this was his response: (http://i.imgur.com/3mpN1R2.png)
Hmm, there has to be one seeing as I have heard from my brother there was one and a member of the forums did describe one existing. Maybe there was a video that was just the animatic or all of the storyboards pieced together, and that's what people saw. Similar to this:

Been a huge fan of Chex Quest since I was a little kid, and I still love all three games (I usually play through all three games several times a year.), so I'm also pretty excited for this.

I KNEW the character (Fred Chexter? I'm not sure what his official name is.) was based on Buzz Lightyear! I guess pretty much everybody realized that, but even as a kid I thought he looked similar, however I never thought to ask on these forums if he actually was or not.

Chex Quest keeps bringing me back, I love the world in it, the characters, the music, the atmosphere even after having playing Doom (which I also like a lot) I still keep coming back to Chex Quest over and over. I was so surprised when I saw Chex Quest in the news feed on Facebook I did a double take! this is also good to bring in a lot more fans, and bring these games more recognition.

Sorry if I was hard to understand, I got a bit overly excited after seeing this on Facebook and typed up my post in a hurry.
Also sorry if I introduced myself more than once, I check this website every so often (usually whenever I get interested in playing Chex Quest again.), but I usually don't have anything to say so I might have introduced myself a couple times.

Also while I'm thinking about it. I have a question for those who might know, it might be a little silly to want to know, but is the Chex guy's armor a part of his body? the reason I ask is because in the opening of the first game (and for the in game Cereal characters that you rarely see.) many of them have their "species" cereal being almost their entire body, for example the Cheerios characters obviously have a big Cheerio as most of their body, but with the Chex characters and the main character, I can't tell if it's just armor they can take on and off, or actually their body.
I would assume it's his body, but it also looks like he has clothes on that seem to go inside of it, and the top part seems to  be separate from the armor, closing over his head and everything, even when I was a kid I was scratching my head trying to figure out how his body works and how he gets his clothes on.

Maybe it's strange to wonder about something like that, but I'd like to know since if I understand how the in game world works it helps me to enjoy it a bit more.

Chex Quest keeps bringing me back, I love the world in it, the characters, the music, the atmosphere even after having playing Doom (which I also like a lot) I still keep coming back to Chex Quest over and over. I was so surprised when I saw Chex Quest in the news feed on Facebook I did a double take! this is also good to bring in a lot more fans, and bring these games more recognition.
wat
Also, WB, pikmintaro! I remember you from seeing your old posts and your re-introduction from like 2014.

We might have to ask Chukker to find out. Actually, it'd be amazing if he told us! :P I always thought it was armor, but look at the Chex Commander (woman who is at the head of the meeting room in the intro). I suspect the Chex peoples' bodies are Chex, like the cheerios etc., but that Chex Warrior also has Chex Armor (like you pick up in the game) over it.

It's why We need more remake of good games like this one ! I have played CQ 1,2 and 3 because i have seen the news about Chex Quest HD! xD
Make a series alive with new games (not only fan games or expansions) is a very good thing because new players can come and try the older games! ^^

I liked a lot CQ 1,2 and 3 and the OST and atmosphere is really nice.
Unreal Engine 4 is cool, i liked a lot RotT 2013 with it (version 1.5.5) !

And the enemies looks really well made !

Will it be a short game like the old ones? Or longer to finish?  :D
EDIT: A yes, sorry ! I havent read well:
"No, the plan is to only include the original 5 levels. They all will however be re-designed. Most will end up being longer to play as a result."
"Chex 2 & 3 - I probably won't consider this until the first is finished. Just getting Chex 1 done will be a lengthy undertaking given the small team."
I hope It will be well received and played, this series is so nice, with CQ2 and 3, it could be awesome too ! :whale

I'm new to the forums. I don't really remember how I first heard about this remake, but when I did, I was blown away, thrilled, and ecstatic! Then I went away for a while. When I came back, there was so much more media attention online. Personally, I call Chex Quest the game that never dies.

I'm really excited about this. I've actually thought of this before, but never done any work for it before beyond making my own cheesy 3D model for a flemoid and trying to turn it into sprites. I am grateful to see all these people working super hard to get this game into reality!

I just had a few preferences- they're really nothing more, but I'd love to see them (maybe we could plan on adding them after the main game is finished? :D ) 1. I'd absolutely love to see this in multiplayer!! I personally like multiplayer games a whole lot, and sometimes multiplayer is the main reason games are good. I think it would be SO COOL if we could have somebody eventually make some deathmatch maps for multiplayers and singleplayers to work on. I'd love to help with that, but I don't know if I could, and I don't have excessive game design experience. (I have made maps before, though!)
  2. If this was made available on mobile platforms (android, ios), I would almost have a heart attack. 'Course, I don't know if Unreal has support for such platforms (I think Unity does, so maybe Unreal does too? :-\ )
  3. I'm hyped about the maps becoming larger. As much as I love Chex Quest, it's kinda cheesy being able to play through an episode in only half an hour, which I've almost been able to do. Once the initial game is finished, I would love to see some new levels made (but again, that's only my preference).
4. 3rd person view as well as first?

Over all, I am totally hyped about this project! I have been playing Chex Quest for years, and it's my favorite game, so this naturally excites me. Thanks, Chukker, for the news and the three pics that have been put up online so far. I look forward to seeing some more pictures soon? (and maybe even videos?) Again, thanks so much! (You've got a new fan  ;) )

P.S. The run and rest animations look awesome! I noticed two things (and I know they're only test animations) - that he doesn't blink when running, and that when running, his legs go through his armor, but they're still great! I love them!

Unfortunately multiplayer, if done at all, will be post launch. There is a ton of network-specific code that would need to be implemented that I know nothing about.

While Unreal does package out to iOS and Android fairly easily, FPS games don't generally play well on touch-screens (in my opinion at least). Another issue is that while it's no problem to package out and distribute a Windows build, distributing for those other platforms require licenses which I would have to buy. I don't even know if I could distribute on something like the app store given that I technically don't own the Chex Quest IP.

To temper expectations, the levels won't be excessively larger than before. They will have more secrets per level than the original and maybe 50% bigger in size.

4. 3rd person view as well as first?

The problems this creates is you suddenly have to create a bunch of new camera code to limit the follow cam clipping walls and other actors. This is something I just don't want to deal with. Perhaps a possible post-launch feature.

When Chex Warrior was concepted back in the day, not a lot of thought was put into how he would actually anatomically function. I want to keep the Chex armor fairly large in proportion to his overall size (as he was concepted) but also allow him to run with a full stride. This is a bit unreconcilable unfortunately, so he will probably clip his armor during running animations.

My apologies for lack of updates. There is progress being made, but much of it is code and systems stuff that doesn't show up in screenshots. I'll try to get something new to show in the next couple of weeks. Thanks for everyones' patience!

If it will be downloaded and liked a lot, will you continue the project for more stuff, like CQ2,3 and maybe multiplayer in the future? I mean, for a v1, it seems to earl and complexe but later?
The jump is a good thing, like mouselook, doomengine has some limit, it's better if we use the basic stuff of fps since the jump was possible in fps (and mouselook then).
Have you tried to talk with the people who have the copyrights to make it more "important" and bigger, i could pay for this game!

Anyway, even all of that, im very happy for a good single player mod, it's the most important in FPS for me, multiplayer can create a bigger community but it's like 30% of fun of a fps for me!
Im just listening the OST of the series, the musics are so cool too !  :whale

I don't want to commit to anything specifically for post-launch until I can get Chex 1 finished. There is so much to do with just getting that done, anything else is just too far in the future. I have had conversations with General Mills regarding this project. They are aware that it is being made and fortunately did not request that I stop production. However any further details about their involvement are not public, since this is their copyright and involves their legal team.

Andrew is working on new music but I haven't gotten any samples of the remixes yet. Once I get some and assuming he gives me a thumbs up to distribute, I will certainly upload a sample. As far as release date... next year sometime is the best I can guess. I've decided to remake the intro/outro using Unreal's sequencer tools. That will add significant time but I feel they should be remade as well since I hope this game gets played by a whole crop of new players unfamiliar with the Chex Quest storyline.

I'm not sure if somebody have asked that yet but will you put the "Super Slimey" (nightmare) mod? It could be a good challenge !
But on Unreal Engine (?).....
Title: Re: Chex Quest HD!
Post by: Chukker on September 12, 2016, 08:49:35 PM
Level of difficulty is something that we will probably do, though it may not work exactly like CQ/Doom. Getting respawning enemies working for Super Slimey in theory shouldn't be too hard to implement, but I haven't looked into it yet.
Title: Re: Chex Quest HD!
Post by: TrueDude on September 14, 2016, 04:54:30 AM
It'd be fine to just have three difficulties. The middle three difficulties in the original CQ were all the same anyway.

Post by: Manhs on September 15, 2016, 04:45:40 PM
It's why a "Nightmare" type mod with the respawn of the enemies could be a great challenge, like a die & retry to continue to play the game.
If the game is bit short, a nightmare mod could be cool for people who want try the ultimate challenge !  :D
And in Chex Quest, it's an enjoyable mod since the enemies dont have bullet/hitscan weapons !  :whale

HMM Interesting. very interested to see how this turns out. After going through all my software classes and projects I definitely have more respect for what it means to work on this as a side project. So far I think it looks great. Someone let me know when we get more of an actual game (beta/ screenshots ect.). My only question is was there a particular reason to use unreal besides your familiarity with it. I know its unreasonable to actually do but could yall imagine Chex in like the new Frostbyte engine?

Biggest reason to go with UE4 is the blueprint system. Blueprints is C++ code turned into a visual node-based tool. Pretty cool stuff for implementing functionality if you're not a programmer, but at least understand programming fundamentals. Here's a new screen, since I haven't posted one in a while. Background for the main menu obviously.

I am really liking the looks of this so far! The title screen looks fantastic. I think my personal preference would be to darken the chex warrior's "visor" though, so only his eyes are visible. That would make it look more like the original title screen. I'm not too picky though because this looks amazing. Hoping for updates soon!

Hello and Happy New Year everyone! We are making good progress on the game. Weapons, power-ups and enemies are nearly all done. The levels are all playable with varying levels of beautification. We've started to block out and animate the remakes of the intro and outro videos as well. Unfortunately now that we are working with the Chex marketing folks on this project, it does make releasing media more complicated. Essentially any released media does need to go by them first, which is why I haven't been posting lots of work-in-progress screens or videos. We are hoping to have a teaser video ready in a few months though.
As for console platforms, that might be something done later. Unreal builds to consoles easily enough, the challenge would be acquiring financial support in order to purchase platform licenses and development hardware.

Hey There,

I wanted to give you guys some background on my inspiration for the new music mixes.

When we did the original back in the 90's, I used two sound cards -- a crappy cheap one and a nicer one that had a built in synthesizer -- that I used to monitor the music to make sure it was acceptable on a range of hardware. That said, the music through the sound cards never sounded as good as the sounds I had access to in my studio with actual synths.

Fast forward to this winter when I started doing the remixes. I actually started going for a more orchestral, movie soundtrack vibe. It sounded pretty good. But I had this flashback to my old synths and wondered what it would sound like if I used more retro sounds. In other words, what if I tried to achieve what I was never able to with the sound cards of the 90s?

I also made a rule for the remixes: I couldn't add any notes, I could only take notes and parts away. The original songs were dense with percussion and other rapid fire movement. I really stripped the songs down to their essence using high quality retro synth sounds and better sound quality overall.

I totally get it if some people are hungry for a more movie soundtrack feel for the music. So many modern games do that really well and that's where I started too. But thinking about the CQ gameplay, the quirkiness of the sounds and music, and the original inspiration for the music, which was more 80s/90s synth-based, got me to what you'll hear in the game.

To me, CQ music is both funny and serious at the same time. Just like the idea of saving the world with a b***** cereal warrior. I was searching for the essence of that in the remixes.

I hope you enjoy it!

Andrew

Andrew
Ah, I see. I was actually thinking about making some orchestral versions of the Chex Quest music myself, would you mind if I did this?

I might as well mention it here: I'm kinda... saddened by the quality of the Zorch effects. I mean, it looks more as if the Flemoid is being vaporized than them being teleported away. Like, how much more difficult would it be to mimic the original zorch effects? You even had it functioning in 3D with the original Chex Quest Intro, so It seems possible... unless it can't be pulled off with the combination of shaders and particle effects you can work with. I don't know how unreal works. Plus the sparks from the zorcher hitting seem a bit to big, but that might not be needs at all if the classic zorch effect is recreated.

Another thing that kinda gets to me, is the moving zorch balls on the small zorcher. They didn't move in the original, and the Large Zorcher doesn't have them, so they are honestly kinda confusing. Either way, the scaling seems kinda off with all of the zorchers.

Something someone else brought up was that the rotation of the flemoids moving in a new direction was too sudden, and that it seemed as if the movement just copied the original monster movement code. I can see this, but to me, it honestly doesn't seem like a huge issue. Might want to look at that anyway, though.

I remember emailing you a few years back, asking about what the music sounded like when you made it. Your response was exactly this: Make it sound good with the simplest and cheapest equipment you had. While I do miss the crazy drums, It sounds really good! The other thing that will help is having everything come together. This should sound fantastic in the background while running through the levels.

Thanks to you and Chukker for all your work so far!

I am just blown away by how awesome you gentlemen are! I personally think the music remix is perfect. It really does give an epic space adventure feeling. Amazing work Drooben! Thanks for taking the time to make this!

Awesomedude, Nomekop... remember this is made in their free time, for fans, for free. Try to show some appreciation please? We don't want to scare them away. Also remember that it's still in production. He'll be adding polish to the game until it's done. I personally think it's amazing the way it is, and will almost certainly like it if he changes it too.

Honest critique is welcomed, not discouraged. Having ideas on how to improve the game by those who will be the ones who play it is usually more helpful then lots of praise at this stage of development. I did experiment with creating more of the shrinking bubble to wink-out as the sprites appear, but it was hard to recreate with a single visual effect that worked from all possible vantage points, including potentially above and below the enemies. The zorch energy being over the top I agree with, it's something I'm not happy with and already have a second iteration of this effect in the works. Regarding the weapons, I didn't want to 100% completely copy the visual design of everything in the game. So embellishments have been added in a number of areas so things feel new but yet familiar. The flemoids having no actual turn animations... yeah :(. Animation blueprints / character controllers are not my area of expertise in Unreal. I've looked at lot of examples online about how to elegantly get pawns to rotate like modern games. It's certainly possible, but will require a lot of new code which I don't have a ton of confidence I can implement without creating new bugs. For example my first attempt at this resulted in flemoids that once you got close to them, just strafing around them would result in them never getting an opportunity to fire at you because they were constantly in a rotation readjust state. It felt like an exploit. So I reverted to them to immediately facing you and playing their attack once in range. Visually inferior but better for gameplay.
Good notes. I encourage anyone with things that they find annoying to mention them. We won't address everything because we can't make everyone happy all the time obviously and we are limited by team size and skills.

I'm blown away by the progress you've made on this, and your eagerness to please the fans and put forth the best product possible, all in your spare time and for free. I know I'm deeply grateful for it, and I'm beyond pleased with both the trailer and the first remix. I think both have managed to capture the heart of the original game while updating it with a fresh modern "high definition" polish. Which was I think the point all along. This is just a high definition remake, not an entirely new Chex game, so I think the decisions made, such as the animation point mentioned above, are not really major issues worth losing sleep over.

Great work and I'm looking forward to seeing more soon!

Hello All! I've never seen this forum before today but I was looking for more info on Chex Quest HD and stumbled in. A quick introduction: For most of my life I've been a huge fan of gaming and there are 3 that were my holy trinity when I first began at a young age; Descent 2, Tekken 3, and Chex Quest.

Descent has been maintained through community mods & source ports. In recent years its genre has been experiencing a renaissance and many of the original team are making a spiritual successor called Overload (it's awesome)!

Tekken never went away. I still love the modern incarnations of Yoshimitsu.

Now Chex Quest is getting a remake! The screenshots and trailer look amazing and I can't wait to play it when it's ready. I always loved the game's mix of funny and serious (although when I was 7 it was actually pretty scary), and it looks like CQ HD has all the elements and the same attitude that I enjoyed so much in the original. When I found out about the project my response was to tell everyone around me about it and start making flemoid noises! Luckily my friends and family and coworkers already know I'm a bit crazy. Thank you Chukker, Drooben, and the rest of your valiant team, you've made me feel like a little excited kid again!

Next year sometime is likely. Probably closer to the summer if I had to guess, based on contributions coming in. Some volunteers have gotten burned out or lost interest. The big hold-ups right now are environment art and cinematic animations, as well bug fixing. All monsters, weapons and power-ups have been done for months. All the levels are blocked out and playable, but vary to the degree with which they have final artwork. Level 1 is close to finished, but the others range from maybe half done to barely started. The sets for the intro/outro cinematics are mostly done as are all the characters for the speaking roles. There's lots of animation to do though, especially lip-syncing to dialogue.
If anyone wants to contribute, please message me! Environment art could be done with any 3D program (Blender is free). Animation needs to be done in 3D Studio Max 2015+.

Title: Re: Chex Quest HD!
Post by: Chukker on November 09, 2017, 08:58:05 PM
I will list some specifics below. I am very willing to mentor any junior artists along if they are interested in helping out. I do that in my 9-5 job as a senior artist. I will provide a model sheet for any assets that need to be created. These will typically have a colored perspective view, some orthographic views and reference images. You might need to be patient though as I may not be very timely in responding to emails or getting critique back to you. Here are some of the outstanding environment art items we need:
Landing Zone- misc. spaceship decor
Storage Facility- modular wall pieces, modular hand rails, staircases, computer consoles
Laboratory- misc. laboratory equipment, tables, lockers, cabinets, large mainframe-style computers
Arboretum- trees and foliage, hydroponics equipment, modular pipes, valves and other plumbing props
Caverns- rocks of all sorts, modular cave walls, mining equipment

Okay, decided to try to scrape up a few of the thing you mentioned. I tried my best, but give me a little grace, cause I'm still learning :D So, not sure if this is the style you're going for, but I could definitely use some critique. What's the best way to share the models with you?

P.S. Unfortunately, I'm not the best texturer - I can texture, but I've never done it for a real professional game before  :P

Chex Quest HD: It definitely looks like it has great potential. This is especially true if it is a remake of the former Chex Quest 3 compilation. I do like that. Its utilization of the full 7.1 channel system is nice. Strangely, it doesn't work for me anymore. It will open to where the Chex piece appears near New Game, but will not go further. It simply alternates between the different episodes' backgrounds. In 1 case, I saw an error. I think that it was something similar to (if it wasn't) "Cannot create screen" followed by the screen resolution. I was considering downloading it again, in an attempt to fix the problem. But, this version would probably be better than that. But, it might not yet be complete and ready for "mainstream distribution."

The latest news is that we have gotten the help of a group of game dev students from Southern New Hampshire University this semester! This should help us crush a lot of bugs and get some content finished. In addition they are going to get the game put on Steam. Don't fret, it will still be free and available elsewhere too. As I have been setting up the game's page on Steam, I would like this forum's admins to message me regarding links to chexquest.org  under community hubs and forums. Do you want that or not? Could potentially mean a huge influx of people, could be a whole lot of nothing. I can't say.

It's getting close to something we could call beta (feature complete + content complete). The biggest outstanding elements right now are environment art (2 of 5 levels are mostly beautified, the others are in-progress) and animation for the intro/outro cinematics. There are still some significant bugs, especially with the save/load system, stat tracking and enemy AI/pathfinding. Kudos to forum members Datra and josepharaoh99, they have both made significant contributions over the last couple of months to getting the levels beautified.

Based on how games for Windows and Mac OS have been going in recent years, designing a version of Chex Quest HD for Steam is definitely a good move. Also making an independent version for those not concerned about online connectivity (as would be required for Steam achievements) and might not feel comfortable with paying for or not have funding to pay for the game is also a good move. I wish the best to the developers and look forward to playing the game again. Seeing inclusion of the introductory and ending cutscenes also sounds nice, as those were not included in the previous iteration of the game.

How far has the project come? Is it ready for testing? I am going to guess not since, with a project as large as this one, testing by multiple users would be welcomed. But, since it seems that the intent is to recreate the games in their entirety (based on [at least, what I think that] I had read earlier in the thread) (possible confirmation:
Quote from: ChukkerIt's getting close to something we could call beta (feature complete + content complete). We are continuing forward, though it was a slow summer. Doesn't seem likely we will finish this year unfortunately. We have completed a rough cut of the intro animation remake. We are talking about polishing that up and releasing it as a trailer. We can probably have that out by end of the year. All game-system stuff is mostly done, minus a few outstanding features like automap and settings screen. Level art is coming along. One level is done, two are approaching finished and the final two still need a lot of beautification.

We do need some help with environment art and general bug fixing. The majority of bugs have to do with edge-case weapon/reloading/ammo pickup situations and enemy pathfinding. This will require at least some working knowledge of Unreal 4's blueprint visual scripting system. Testing is not ready to open up to a wide group right now. With just a single tester and dev testing, our find rate is still way higher than our fix rate.

Hello everyone! It's been a while since I dropped in, but there is good news. Chex Quest HD will be launching within the next month!

https://store.steampowered.com/app/804270/Chex_Quest_HD/ (https://store.steampowered.com/app/804270/Chex_Quest_HD/)

I can finally announce that the community development team has partnered with General Mills and Flight School Studio in Dallas to finish the game, create brand new cinematics, add 5 new playable characters and add a multiplayer mode! Chex Quest HD should be going live within the next few weeks and there will be a new product pack-in! Timing is pretty bad for a in-store package promotion obviously, with Covid-19 keeping all of us inside as much as possible and out of the stores. GM will be providing alternate means to distribute the character unlock codes so a product purchase will not be required.

Maybe I'm wrong, but it looked like the mega pack is just the the super pack + the vinyl OST + some trading cards. They say it includes the basic pack, but the basic pack is already in the super pack, so are you getting 2x games, OST CDs, and posters? The wording on the mega pack page was not entirely clear. Either way, I'm not into vinyl, and the trading cards seemed too poor an add-on to the mega pack to be worth my time. Now if they were offering a Chex Warrior cereal bowl I might have made an exception.

I bought the Chex Warrior bundle the minute I heard about it. I feel like we have AVGN to thank for getting the game some mainstream attention.

General Mills themselves have taken note of the popularity surge as well, they officially host Chex 3 now: https://www.chexmix.com/chexquest/

They are also now the official publisher of Chex Quest HD, not entirely sold on the Chex Mix rebrand but we are getting new warriors out of it so eff it: https://store.steampowered.com/app/804270/Chex_Quest_HD/

The weapons are the one area where I'm disappointed, the scaling just looks plain awkward.

Slightly cringe marketing aside I do respect that they seam to acknowledge this as a new returning invasion rather than retconing Chex Mix into the old story.

posted this in the discord, will post again (with additions) here. I did not play past the first level, nor did I finish the level at all - so please keep in mind these are very early impressions but I still believe these issues are important to address.

options are very limited:
for me, the mouse sensitivity is just a bit too high on the default setting but far too low on the lowest.
there's no control rebinding.
audio also feels very unbalanced, flemoid sounds are low but doors are quite loud.
FOV is a bit low (again, for me) and also unadjustable.
video options consist of resolution, anti-aliasing, and vsync only.

on my (admittedly dated) rig, performance takes a bit of a hit when I see the hatch-opening cutscene.

animations in general are very slow and...lifeless? this is something I've felt since the reveal trailer, and while they have notably improved a little since then, they still seem to be missing a little something. this is easily the most jarring aspect of the game currently, and one that will leave a lasting impression because first impressions based on visuals hold a lot of weight.

just a thought from me - the AI consisting of moving towards the player in a straight line means speedrunners are going to have much less fun with this game because enemies will bodyblock the snot (ha) out of the player.

one-liners reminiscent of build engine games are definitely making chuckle a bit, looking forward to hearing all the new characters.

I have to wonder how trivial it would be to just edit the save or something and unlock the extra characters early. They clearly didint care about having a secure system since they arent using DLC.

Update: I take great nerd cred in announcing that I have day 1 cracked Chex Quest HD to unlock all characters before any codes even dropped. Turns out its remarkably easy lol.
(https://i.imgur.com/GKYOi9k.jpg) (https://i.imgur.com/GKYOi9k.jpg)

Method 1 (the easy way):
Dump the attached "GamePersistantData.sav" file into "C:/users/<YOUR NAME>/Local Settings/Application Data/ChexHD/Saved/SaveGames".

Method 2 (how I generated this file):
You will need to unlock console commands, personally I used "Universal Unreal Engine 4 Unlocker". Once unlocked open the console in game and type the handy code the devs left in "UnlockAllCodes".

Is Chukker team allowed to update the game to fix stuff or add more things? (like customize control)?

I finished it and it was really nice, the feeling of the run mode was a bit weird and the switching weapon too, except that, it was a big pleasure to play a game like that (mazed) with nice 3D stuff!

Good job, i hope to see more!

Title: Re: Chex Quest HD!
Post by: chexman107 on September 12, 2020, 02:48:52 AM
Hey everybody,

I have been thinking about something that can spice up the gameplay of Chex Quest HD in its new and improved version. I am thinking maybe each one of the six characters can be armed with a special zorcher unique to themselves. They can find a special box that contains the special zorcher and the character can open it to obtain it and the ammo (if applicable) inside. These are my ideas:

Fred Chexter: Golden Zorcher - This zorcher can fire a supercharged, yellow-gold colored zorch that is 100x more powerful than a Mini Zorcher shot. Much like the Golden Gun from the 007 series (N64 Goldeneye 007 comes to mind), it can dispatch most enemies in one hit. You will have to reload each shot as opposed to the Large Zorcher, which, in Chex Quest HD, shoots five shots before reloading. Max ammo: 50 (100 w/ZorchPak).

Wheatney Chexworth: Stun Zorcher - Unlike other zorchers, this zorcher does not send anyone back to their own dimension. Instead, it temporarily stuns them. The lower the health of the target, the longer the stun will last. Max ammo: 100 (200 w/ZorchPak).

P.R.E.T.Z.L.: Zorch Gloves - Exactly as described in http://www.chexquest.org/index.php?action=downloads;sa=view;down=37, only that it will be just the right size for P.R.E.T.Z.L.'s hands.

NACL96: Zorch Laser - This zorcher fires a laser that can eat into an enemy's health before zorching them away. Think of this as a long-ranged version of the Super Bootspork. The zorch ammo is measured by percentage (or simply by number) in which can recharge overtime. However, if the zorch energy was drained to 0% (or 0), the zorcher overheats and cannot be used again until it charges to at least 25% (25).

Dr. O Ryen: Zorch Plasma - Also a charge-based zorcher, though it can go from 0% (0) to 100% (100). At 100% (100), this zorcher will need to cool down before using it again. You have two options: You can tap the fire button to shoot one or multiple time(s) (the charge % can go up a set number, like 10, for simplicity's sake) or hold the fire button to charge the zorch plasma from 0% to 100% before firing a single, very powerful blast. Similar to the weapon, Samurai, from 007: Nightfire.

Shane "The Dread" McBread: Magnum Zorcher - Being the old-school cowboy that he is, The Dread's most suitable weapon will be the Magnum Zorcher. What this zorcher does is that it can zorch an enemy and then the zorch will connect to another enemy behind the first enemy and so on until it reaches an obstacle, such as a wall. It also wields 2x the power of a Mini Zorcher shot. This is based off of the Cougar Magnum from Goldeneye 007. Max ammo: 100 (200 w/ ZorchPak).

And another food-for-thought idea for all the characters: The Mid Zorcher. It shoots zorch faster than the Mini Zorcher, but slower than the Rapid Zorcher. It shoots like the SMG from Wolfenstein 3D.

Also, I think it would be fun if Chex Quest HD could be played on the Nintendo Switch as well as on the PC. If there ever is an update of CQHD called Chex Quest HD Plus, perhaps the zorcher weapons and other snazzy features will be added to the game. Thanks for reading.

Those are some cool idea, I always felt that This HD remake is missing a lot of thing that could make it truly great.

Admittedly, I haven't played the HD version yet. Anyway, I also think it would also be amusing if there were bathrooms in the Storage Facility level (like the Chemical Facility level in Goldeneye 007) or some other levels such as City Streets (the level before the Sewage System). In there, you could find items 8) and/or flemoids.  :lolwut

Anyway, if anyone could find time for improvement on the making of Chex Quest HD (Plus), that would be great too! Thanks for reading.

Sadly, I might not be able to play the HD version for a while.
My new (ish) computer is down right now and I think the HD version requires Windows 10.  (Correct me if I am wrong.)

The minimum requirements according to Steam are:

Requires a 64-bit processor and operating system
OS: Windows 10 or newer
Processor: Intel Core i or AMD Ryzen with 4 physical cores
Memory: 8 GB RAM
Graphics: nVidia GTX 960 or AMD Radeon HD 7950
DirectX: Version 12
Storage: 3 GB available space

I don't know if they did extensive testing, or if this is just what Unreal Engine claims. It might be worth trying if your computer is windows vista/7/8.

CQHD runs on Windows 8.  It's quite slow, but I assume that's because of my laptop's specs rather than the OS.

You know if they are ever planning for a sequel, they could allow the players to play as all of the squadron at once; like utilizing a swap in swap out system; which allows the player to switch different squadron members in and out for different situations

I think the developers of Chex Quest HD should create an update called Chex Quest HD (Plus) to add the features such as new unique zorchers suggested by me and perhaps the rotation system as mentioned by mryellow362. This game would be even cooler with the new features. Hopefully, Chukker and others will take that into consideration!

Plus, if the makers of this game could possibly strike a deal with Nintendo to add this game to Nintendo Switch, that will be even better!

Finally got my fancy CQHD limited edition cereal box the other day. There's now an angry tin Fred Chexter figurine planted on my desk. I'm really nerd'n out about it haha. The whole box is really high quality, and I love everything in it.

Got mine today. Loving my light up zorcher. Never too old for cool toys, amirite?

It blows my mind that I was just listening to the Chex Quest soundtrack on a vinyl record. The future is weird, man.

Yep, I got Chex Quest HD on Nintendo Switch a few days ago! Neither my laptop nor my desktop computers are capable of downloading the PC version of Chex Quest HD, so I am very glad I finally got it.

I completed the Chex Quest HD game with Shane "The Dread" McBread and NACL-96. And I am halfway through with Fred Chexter.

Also, in Co-op mode, if you can somehow get the flemoids to get stuck somewhere and stop attacking you (provided you got the blue key), you can explore this cool museum that is filled with Chex Quest artwork, including a few from the original Chex Quest game.

I also noticed that the other portraits in the museum also featured images from the Chex Quest Anthology comic book that is provided by chexmix.com/chexquest.

Can we have a patch for the game where it fixes the lag in the museum portion of the Coop mode

One other thing I noticed in Chex Quest HD is that Wheatney Chexworth's ending had Chex Quest's E3M3 music in it, which is not listed in Andrew Benson's list of music he posted on Spotify.

Hey Chexman, you're right!

I just reposted the Chex Quest B-Sides on my Bandcamp. It includes E3M3. I don't control the CQ Spotify, unfortunately. But you can download any of the CQ tracks for free on my Bandcamp.

Wouldn't it be nice to have some DLC coming for Chex Quest HD. Five new levels and other cool features in place. If the makers have the needed resources to get this done, it would be great.

I wonder if Chex Quest HD will make updates before 2.0, such as fixing bugs.
