The Japanese have a system for writing designed as essentially a pronunciation guide for foreign names called Katakana. Katakana however, is still limited by the sounds in the Japanese language. Thus, not being able to say "Xiaoxian", they wrote it as something that sounds very similar, "Syaoran".
