Title: Chex Quest 3 is now available for download!!!
Post by: Chukker on September 06, 2008, 06:41:17 PM
You can grab it at www.chucktropolis.com/downloads/ChexQuest3.zip (http://www.chucktropolis.com/downloads/ChexQuest3.zip).

Whew... it's been a while on this little hobby project. While I could easily polish and add features forever, I need step away and let it be. The game is in a very presentable form, so GO GET IT! Thanks to a little technical support from yet another DC original, Scott Holman, this game is a standalone application. You do not need to download ZDoom! The exe and IWAD are all part of the download. Unzip and play!

Feel free to begin threads about bugs and other things you feel should be corrected. I will try to address any serious bugs quickly, but all polish and other feature suggestions probably will be put off for a time. Make sure you try out Chex 1 and 2 for some new suprises here and there.

Thanks again Chex Quest fans for all your enthusiasm! It has helped me stay motivated and get this done. I hope you all enjoy the sequel!

It's not UNUSED. It's that thing in E3M3 that shoots Ultricus balls.

Most of the members here have ZDoom for the mods here that require it, so you will perhaps find at least some others like me that would prefer to fire it through ZDoom rather than have one more engine to muck with.

I will refrain from posting some synonym of "awesome" until I download it and play it. :D

Okay, one problem I found, I don't know if it is intentional.  But it is possible to beat level one without getting the red key, is this intentional atm, or are you planning to do something else.  I don't want to give away how to do it just yet if you don't want me to give any hints.

Also, there was a pretty good amount of bugs...not just in the original levels, but in the new ones...I might get with TGA and we'll do a list...

I LOVED THIS SLICE OF EPIC WIN! =D
The new monsters (Apart from the Ultricus and that tall, dangly Demon replacement) are SO CHEESY though. Your lost soul replacement doesn't look good whatsoever (In look, not in spriting ability- You're still awesome at that Chukker) and the SPID replacemnt looks cobbeled together. The Cyberdemon replacement is the Best of the worst. (3rd best monster in CQ3)
Anyways, you are awesome at mapping Chukker! ^^

I think all the sprites are excellent. Especially when the Flembomination (not such a good name XD) shoots just as many slime balls as its firing animation suggests.

This was awesome. Everything looked just right. The textures still felt like the cartoony CQ1 and 2, but had the more modern themes to them...The new enemies looked just like the Larvae and Quadrumpus in CQ2 did compared to CQ1...We got new flemoids...We got a good set of new levels...got some new textures and items, and a whole nother aspect on our CQ Universe! Now, my only question...When will 'The Ultimate Chex' come out? (meaning, a 4th episode of win like this)
Title: Chex Quest 3 is now available for download!!!
Post by: Manny Cav on September 07, 2008, 10:06:45 AM
When I made my previous statement, I had obviously not download the game. The changes to the engine were much more substantial than I originally anticipated. Still, what would even be better is if the changes were released in a DeHackEd/DECORATE/WAD/PK3 download that allowed modders like me to easily implement the changes in our mods, like I would like to do. :)

There were quite a few bugs. I'm probably going to forget some, since I didn't give it a real through playing through. The CYBRE1 thing is, regrettably, something that seems to happen once in awhile to sprites or graphics. They look fine in-game, but when you try to export them, it completely messes with everything.

Because The Ultimate Chex Quest Phase I was used as the base to combine Chex Quest 1 and 2, it inherited its problems, like in the first blue room in E1M1 with the Bazoik Nutritional Development Center poster that has some blank textures.

There was a HOM on the elevator in the region where you get the blue flem key. Also on the subject of flemkeys, the red pickup message has a spelling "nistake" ("Picked up a red sflemkey."), and the yellow flemkey's flashing sequence with the sprites seems out of phase with the other two flemkeys.

As with the text, like pick-up messages, a lot of them are different from the original Chex Quest engine, like the armor pick-up messages, the erroneous zorch pick-up messages that list a specific amount of zorch that was picked up, etc.

I did like certain changes to the levels, notably, E2M2. Perhaps these changes will make it to The Ultimate Chex Quest, Boingo the Clown? :)

I offer more when I give it a thorough playing through.

Also, to dig up an old issues, throughout the readme and the in-game text itself, the cacodemon replacement is consistently referred to as the Super Cycloptis. I think the issue on what the cacodemon replacement is named is forever settled, and that that new silly name that we came up with should be dropped off of the face of the earth. >:D

I must also add that the Maximus retained its turning error from Chex Quest 2 that makes it appear to be facing right when it is facing left, and vice versa. I was also a little disappointed that the Stridicus was another demon replacement. I was hoping for a revenant replacement or something similar. We already had two demon replacements. Still, this is easily the biggest thing to happen to Chex Quest, period.

I must disagre, all the new sprites are wonderfull! I like the lost soul and strider thingy the most. I love how the lost soul shoots slime in every derection with the pipes attached to it, Also the new demon repacement was great it almost scared me when I first saw it how fast it was moving. <_<
The 1st boss was't what I expected, but it looked cool. The final boss was great, the name was funny. ^_^

A few more bugs to add, I found myself getting stuck in some places because some of the doors didn't have the 'repeatable action' flag checked. Also, the doortracks didn't have the 'lower unpegged' flag checked, so they moved up and down with the door.

That's all the bugs I found on the first run.

And did Boingo make that E2M2 replacement? It looks very similar to one of the old screenshots he took of his replacement.

And I'll say it again: Epic, epic, win. ;D

Technically, the "original" doom monsters were the ones in the shareware, as that came out first. And Doom 2 monsters are original.

But shareware was just one episode, and it didn't technically come first...it was just the only free thing. Original doom refers to the 3 episode DooM of which a shareware was released to gain popularity and attention that would hopefully make you buy it. This Monster list includes

Possesed
Sergeant
Demon
Imp
Bruiser
Cacodemon
Cyberdemon
Lost soul and
Spider Mastermind

DooM 2 added
Archvile
Pain elemental
SpiderDemon
Revenant
Chaingunner
mancubus
Knight
and John Romero's head on a stick XD

(and if you say ANYTHING about me missing one...do it nicely, plz?)

I, of course, mean that silly name, "Flemoidus Cycloptis Ultricus". All of the text strings, like when you get slimed by the Super Cycloptis, the Doom II gallery text, and even the readme say Super Cycloptis, so there can be no doubt anymore what the official name is. You don't question Chukker's name, do you? :-\

Anyway, I found a couple of other things. The new switch system in E1M2 for the 3 "hidden switches" is a little messed up. they don't open the right doors, and one doesn't open at all. :-\

Also, in E3M1, there is a little problem with a door at the end of the red flashing area. If you open it, but don't go in and it closes, you can't open it again from the red room, which makes the red key impossible to get without cheating.

If somebody has some time and is industrious enough, it would be nice to get these bugs and other feedback compiled somewhere I can easily reference it. It could be a post in the tech support section or a wiki page. Some of them, like the lock assignments on E3M2, I will try to correct soon enough.

Isn't the Spiderdemon just another name for the Spidermastermind? It's not a new monster...

Anyways, I've done some thinking about the lost soul replacement and I think I like it... but not as a lost soul replacement, as a DECORATE 'Slime Bomb'.
I also SERIOUSLY had EPIC LULZ when I saw the 'Shreddies Provincial park' and made it look like english countryside... Only English people would get this joke. I salute you, Chukker!

Chukker, that was incredible. The first level was sorta slow, and I was worried that the rest of the game would be that way. However, by the third level, the action was so intense I was actually sweating! You have outdone yourself, I must say!

The attention to detail and atmosphere in those levels was incredible. The new flemoids were all very intense [Stridicus gave me particular grief with how fast that thing is!]

Perhaps my ONLY complaint is that there is a continual shortage of Ammunition on Easy Does It. Either that, or I am just trigger happy [the latter is most likely the case]

Either way, I just spent the last two hours of my life having one of the most intense gaming experiences I've had in years. Good Job does not adequately describe the work you have done.

Well, the ammo shortage makes it interesting.  You have to be conservative or invent ways to get through.  If you're good at using a spoon, try taking out all communuses with it.  Then move on to cycloptisus.  If you're feeling daring try the beppies.  You can save ammo this way, and that's how I beat it on Extreme Ooze.

I found myself quite short ammo on the first level and had to use my Bootspoon against some BWAs and some others around the beginning of the level, but I didn't have to do it past the first portion of the first level after I found some good packs. I carefully budgeted between the Large Zorcher, the Rapid Zorcher, the Propulsor (by the way, MUCH more practical with the splash damage removed), and the LAZ Device under certain situations.

I also noted that the Propulsor explosion sound was changed to that of the LAZ Device. What's up with that?

EDIT: Yes, the PK3 was edited. The language.enu file is evidence of that.

If somebody has some time and is industrious enough, it would be nice to get these bugs and other feedback compiled somewhere I can easily reference it. It could be a post in the tech support section or a wiki page. Some of them, like the lock assignments on E3M2, I will try to correct soon enough.
Has this gone unoticed?
I might start a topic for you in the Tech Support Section soon. ^^

Hey, do it now...or better yet, I will...I started in the original episodes and tried to find some errors (there were a few), but I might need to get more technical..."Room with yellow key inside the area behind the 2nd blue door" is extremely confusing ><

I'll agree...this was an awesome set of levels, but totally hard.

..."Its called Ninja gaiden, its suposed to be, like, totally hard!"...

My ONLY problem was the fact that I saved when I was low on health, and was low on ammo, and couldn't find enough to win the level...then when I restarted the whole thing, I grabbed every thing I could, and STILL didn't have enough ><

After several requests I have uploaded the source to chex3.exe.
www.chucktropolis.com/downloads/chex3_zdoom.zip (http://www.chucktropolis.com/downloads/chex3_zdoom.zip)
It was compiled with Visual Studio Express Edition, which is free from Microsoft. You will also need to install Microsoft Windows SDK v6.1. You're on your own at this point. I don't really have the time to teach people how to get this to compile if you don't know how already. I figured it out by going to the ZDoom wiki, I recommend anyone having trouble do that too.
Also here is the Doombuilder config file:
www.chucktropolis.com/downloads/ZDoom_Chex3.cfg (http://www.chucktropolis.com/downloads/ZDoom_Chex3.cfg)

Edit - this now points to the correct source.

Is this really the correct source? What you have posted here looks like a plain GZDoom 1.1.3 source with only one change to the DECORATE definition of the Lost Soul. Were there any other changes that need to be considered? We would like to officially support this as an IWAD in ZDoom and therefore need to know whether there were other changes to the EXE itself other than the game name on the startup screen.

Hey, Graf Zahl! Welcome to the forums! (even if its only for this ;)) And I dont think you need an introduction.

Hmm...He made some text changes, some episode progression changes, and a few other things to gain CHEX.exe emulation...but has a few mistakes we're trying to list out to him. And actually...I think merging it with (G)ZDooM would be a bit hard. all of his decorate, decals, and the like are in zdoom.pk3, not in the wad...It could be possible to extract the changes from the zdoom.pk3 and place them in the wad, supplying us with a DECORATE lump...but looking at the patches of DECORATE here...wow. Hes done a great deal of editing all the DooM txts into his own things. All enemies shoot custom damage of FLEM, and he's changed the simple ones into mele attacks. so...it'd take a while to get a single DECORATE lump when hes edited most everything...

Hey Graf, thanks again for a great piece of software engineering. No, there are significantly more changes both to code and to the decorate files that got built into zdoom.pk3 than just the lost soul.

Edit - okay I am a huge idiot. I zipped up the wrong directory. I should have known something was up when the file was only 18 MBs. The previous link is now updated. Sorry folks for wasting your time downloading the wrong thing, my bad.

The DECORATE definitions are the least of my worries. With a little tinkering that is all doable - although I will have to rename the actors so that they don't collide with Doom's original names.

If you look at the latest ZDoom SVN code you will see that we already added support for the original CHEX.WAD, although it still needs some work (some of which CHEX3 already has done.) I don't know yet how much of the definitions can be used for both WADs yet. It will probably require some additional work to put it all together in one file.

The biggest conflict I see is that the Flembrane's definition is different between both WADs so that will probably need some hacking to get it correct for both.

But to be honest, most of the changes to zdoom.pk3 would have better been placed in the IWAD itself to avoid problems. If you had done this ZDoom probably would have been able to load it as it is.

If I have read this right, then why not make the flembrane just like it was supposed to be in the original game? I'm sure chucker was trying to imatate it as much as he could. You would just make it closer then he was.

You misunderstand. What I mean is that the way the Flembrane is defined here is not compatible with the original Chex.wad. It has both a different editor number and different sprite names.

That will be necessary anyway. But unlike Doom the contents are not compatible.

But if you notice, Chex Quest 3 is a three episode version of DooM. It contains all 3 episodes of CQ, 1, 2, and the new 3. The original CQ changed nothing, just replaced sprites and did minor edits to code. This simulates those changes, replaces sprites, then also creates new sprites/objects, and does more.

About the DECORATE in the IWAD...I was wondering the same thing, but the full engine felt cool. It is possible to compress it into an IWAD, tho...

EDIT: sorry, that was in reply to ZorchDude's post...

Here's an important question: If I could clean up the resource organization a little would you be interested in a re-release?

There's a few problems with this that could cause problems when run with standard ZDoom and GZDoom:

1. There's still some FraggleScripts left in 3 maps. This could cause confusion when run with GZDoom although they don't do anything critical.
2. Since I need to rename all actors for inclusion in ZDoom this could cause incompatibilities with the accompanying EXE in case someone wants to define custom content based on it.
3. I noticed that the meaning of some code pointers was changed. Again this would cause problems with DECORATE additions.

All of these issues can be resolved easily without causing incompatibilities with your own EXE.

Plus,  I found one (rather amusing) bug:

If you switch blood to particles they are still beautifully red! :D

Hmm, I would be VERY interested in a re-release...not only for reorginization (for use outside of our engine), but maybe chuck could get some of the bugs fixed. And that list...I would think its alrite, but ask Chuck before you do much...He might not agree (but why wouldn't he?). Hmm...and the blood bug is funny, but AFAIK hard to change...but I could be wrong.

and @ TGA: ORLY? WOW! I didn't notice that...

OFFTOPIC: "The strongest phrase you can ever have is 'I could be wrong.'"

Good to hear! :) I'll have a closer look over the weekend. I can say right now that most issues can simply be resolved by moving some contents out of zdoom.pk3 into the IWAD. The biggest pile of work will be renaming the DECORATE actors to avoid collisions.
Title: Chex Quest 3 is now available for download!!!
Post by: Manny Cav on September 10, 2008, 06:49:27 PM
I would absolutely love for Chex Quest 3's changes to be made into DECORATE or whatever patches that can be placed into a WAD so as to make it fully cross-port compatible with ZDoom, GZDoom, Skulltag, etc. Everything's in the WAD. Just pop it into our source port of choice.

One thing I noticed about the Chex Quest 3 engine is that I couldn't find the OpenGL option I adore, something that can likely be attributed to making the engine based off of ZDoom. If you were going to make a new Chex Quest engine, then ZDoom would be the best source code to use, since it is the "original" port off of the ZDoom family. However, nothing beats having all of the changes in ZDoom compatible patches loaded into the WAD to allow it to be played on any ZDoom family port.

My point exactly. We need to find a way to get everything in a convenient package that can be slapped into the WAD itself rather than in a whole new engine, which I'm sure is what Graf Zahl is talking about.

Indeed it is. The cyber-demon, SpiderMastermind, and the two posses have been changed, along with the Animdef, and I sure that the mapinfo was changed as well.

This is alittle off topic, It appears that the "player.damagescreencolor" flag doesn't work in GZdoom. I'm not sure if Chucker used it is all.

The uploaded code was wrong. There actually were some changes - in fact some that I didn't expect. A_PosAttack, A_SposAttack and A_CyberAttack were changed so this EXE isn't even compatible with stock ZDoom. I think the best course of action is to put as much data as possible - including DECORATE code - into the IWAD and then make sure that ZDoom can load it. That would eliminate the need for a custom EXE completely so an update can be packaged with a ZDoom version based on the latest code.

Other than fixing the bugs to CQ3, I don't have any set plans for more work in the Chex universe. It was fun revisiting it, however. If I do decide to make more, it wouldn't be until after the holidays at the earliest. Anyone have a clear idea what the status of TUCQ is? Seems like progress has slowed with Boingo's available time and competing projects. There's much that is really great about the changes made to the original levels in the Ultimate Chex Quest. Would people want to see those changes integrated into CQ3? Assuming Boingo was okay with that of course. Or do people prefer having CQ3 having the old levels and TUCQ being as its name implies, the "ultimate" version of the game with all bells and whistles, especially now that it is being ported to GZDoom.

As promised, here's a CQ3 version that's compatible with a regular zdoom/gzdoom.exe (ZDoom SVN revision 1219 and higher.)
I included my latest build for convenience because the current SVN builds are not yet up to date. This will also work with GZDoom once I update it to the latest ZDoom code which should be tomorrow.

I found and fixed a few more, relatively minor problems:

1. In the DECORATE definitions in zdoom.pk3, the Large Zorcher Pack pickup message definition was missing the $ sign, so it would display ingame as "GOTLARGEZORCHERPACK".

2. The barriers on the semicircular walkways in E3M1 were low enough to jump over.

3. The locked doors in E3M2 weren't assigned keys.

4. A few misaligned and one misplaced texture in E3M2. I know there's more misaligned textures, but I felt like they could be excused. These particular ones were just really glaring errors.

Here's (http://www.megaupload.com/?d=PHEJHTNJ) the fixed version.

Firstly, hello there.  My "name" is Enjay but I know that a few people here know me already.  Secondly, I'm really enjoying Chex3.  Chex has always been a strange and interesting chapter in Doom history and I really like what has been done for this third instalment.

Over at the Zdoom forums I mentioned a few bugs that I had spotted and asked that they be relayed over here.  Seeing as how the release is obviously being revised to repair some bugs, it makes sense to try and catch as many as possible before an official re-release.  I believe that Captain Ventris has already relayed the message, but here it is again:

Quote from: over at Zdoom EnjayIn E3M3 right by the exit line there is a nasty unclosed sector which causes flat-bleeding and looks ugly.

In E3M5 line 508 opens a door but it is only single use.  It needs to be repeatable or else you can get stuck in that room.
Also in E3M5, lines 264, 267 and 268 activate a raising lift.  When the lift rises, these lines need a lower tex, but they don't have one so you see a big HOM if you step off the lift.

And whilst I'm reporting bugs, there is one that has persisted since the original cereal-box release - when viewed side on, the rockets fly backwards.  Very obvious if you are strafing around a big-bad-guy.  The rockets fly "flame first".  This is because of the naming convention used for them.  To fix it, either the offending sprites need to be reversed, or renamed.

The sprites are:

MISLA8A2
MISLA7A3
MISLA6A4

For those of you familiar enough with Doom editing to recognise it, you will notice that these names are not the usual way around.  For some reason, id did this with some projectiles (but it doesn't have to be that way).  The problem is that if the name is reversed then the graphic needs to point the opposite way to normal too and that hasn't been done with these graphics.  So, as I said, the graphics should either be flipped in the X direction and then re-imported into the wad (with suitable offsets) or simply renaming them to the following should do the trick.

MISLA8A2 ---> MISLA2A8
MISLA7A3 ---> MISLA3A7
MISLA6A4 ---> MISLA4A6

Also, quite a few of the sounds have an annoying audible click at the end.  The pickup sound springs to mind, but there are others.  I know that in the "good old days" the program for sticking sounds into WADs called DMAUD would often add a click to the end of a file.  I wonder if this is a legacy of that?

Anyway, it would be nice if these things were cleaned up too.  These bugs are all things I could easily fix myself, and I would be happy to do so.  However, I wouldn't do them without an official OK and instructions as to how to proceed.

And more.  When you go to E3M4 you get the following message at the console:

These textures are used in the map, but do not exist.  Again, a pretty east fix.  And I also discovered that there is more than one problematic unclosed sector in E3M3.  I'm fixing up my own copy and if people want it uploaded, let me know.

OK, so if people want it, I have a WAD with the following changes.

Maps E1M3, E1M5, E2M5, E3M1, E3M2, E3M3, E3M4, E3M5 all edited to remove bugs flagged up by DeePsea's error checker.  Most edits would never even be noticed, but the maps now get a clean bill of health.

Missile graphic reversed.

About 20 sounds edited to remove clicks at the end.

Map header changed to IWAD instead of PWAD.

Question: Is the only way to get the blue key on E3M3 to jump?  It seems to me that you have to go out onto a balcony that overlooks the courtyard, then jump into the courtyard over the wall of the balcony.  It could just be me, but I don't see any other way of getting to the blue key.  I'm just asking because I can't think of any where else that jumping is actually required.

It does?  I'll see if I can fix that as well.  All I have to do is figure out which one is the Flemoidius Maximus.

[edit] Yes, quite right, the BOSS* frames are back to front.  I'll fix them too [/edit]
[edit2] And done.  Problem frames reversed and re-inserted into the WAD with appropriate offsets. [/edit2]

And sorry about the quadruple post.

Any idea about the blue key in E3M3?  I've looked in the editor and whilst playing.  The only way I can see to get it is to jump over the balcony barrier.  This doesn't seem right to me.  There are a couple of possible ways to address this but if it is intended, then I guess I shouldn't change it.

I'll happily upload them, but I thought I'd hold off until finding out about the E3M3 thing.  My sugestion for a fix BTW would be to put a switch up on the wall of the balcony.  This would open the door back on the street that would allow the player to go back down to the street and into the blue key courtyard through the building.

If that is acceptable, I'll do it (or an alternative).  If not, I'll upload what I have.

Acceptable?  Normally I wouldn't check for such a minor mod, but seeing as how it's not actually my map...

I didn't put the step all the way around because the barrier height has been set to 25 units - clearly intended to stop the player going over the edge by accident.

So, I'll hang off for a little bit just in case anyone comes up with anything else that needs to be addressed then I'll upload it.

I notice, for example, that there are a lot of doors where the doortracks move but a) that might be intended b) it doesn't break gameplay at all and c) unless it was viewed as being important to change, I wouldn't bother searching through the maps to find them all.  Mind you, I guess I could get them all done within half an hour.  There aren't that many levels or doors.  Best to leave it alone though?

Hi, Enjay! We're discussing Chex Quest 3 bugs and technical difficulties in the topic here (http://chexquest.org/index.php?topic=929.0), so please post your discoveries there instead of here. Also, so as to not cause conflicts and confusion with Chukker's new releases uploaded at http://www.chucktropolis.com/gamers.htm, it would be best to just post your discoveries at the topic I linked you to so Chukker can update and upload new releases himself.

The door that allows you on to the balcony (2) is opened via a switch in a nearby room (1).  You have to run to that.  However, once you are on the balcony, that door can close behind you and there is no way other than switch (1) to open it so if you can't get over the balcony wall, you will be trapped in the balcony area.

Also, switch (1) opens the balcony access door (2), but that's all it does so, if you cant get over the balcony wall, there is still no way into the blue key courtyard.

The room that you go through to get out of the courtyard has a door (3) that is only openable from the courtyard side, again implying that you have to get to it via the balcony.

Although jumping in E3M4 allows you to skip a great chunk of the level from the very start! (The wooden wall near the guard tower)

Jumping also lets you skip by a lot in some of the original Chex Quest (and Doom, for that matter) levels, so to keep the experience pure, one could simply refrain from jumping (provided the levels are made to not require it, of course).

Okay, I'm kind of new to this thing so I have a few questions:
Is it free to download?
When you download it, does it seriously slow down your computer?

Sorry if I might be re-asking any questions, I'm just excited! lol

The Chex Quest 3 download is now updated with a new version that is compatible with ZDoom/GZDoom. Many thanks to the ZDoom team members who made the necessary changes to chex3.wad and added support in zdoom.exe for both this and the original chex.wad. I also grabbed the latest SVN code and compiled a new chex3.exe, but the changes are extremely minor. The experience playing through zdoom is pretty much the same. I tried to reconcile my previous bug fixes into this version of chex3.wad, but I probably missed some. Feel free to point them out in the other thread.

I've been swamped with schoolwork lately, but last night at around 11pm, I finally got the spare time to sit down, download, and play through the entire CQ trilogy.

Here are my thoughts and comments as I played through it. I won't mention a lot of bugs, since most of them have been covered by others here, or have been fixed (since I played through the latest version).

- I noticed right away that the commonus and bipedicus could no longer attack from a distance. I had always found it unusual that the flemmies could slime you from far away in TUCQ, and while the extra range made the game more challenging for us veteran zorchers, it just didn't feel the same to me. To sum it up, i'm glad that they're back to sliming at close range. ^_^ Not only does it stay true to the original games, but it also makes the game a lot more completable on Super Slimey. (Hitscan attacks were always the hardest to avoid, since Nightmare mode buffed up the accuracy of monsters who used them.)

- In other CQ mods, the flemmies played zorch sounds when they attacked, which didn't make much sense. In that case, I loved the fact that you replaced the zorch sounds with a slime sound. Now you can actually hear when a flemmie is trying to snot you from behind. ^_^

- On the note of sounds, I noticed a slight bug. Sometimes when a commonus or bipedicus is zoched, it plays the Cycloptis' attacking noise instead of the "I got zorched!" noise. It could just be the standalone engine you used, though.

- Another thing I noticed about the standalone engine is that when you're attacked, the screen doesn't flash green unless it's an extremely powerful blow, such as the final boss's slime balls. It could just be my graphic settings, but has anyone else noticed this?

- The graphical changes you made to Chex City in Episode 2 are absolutely fantastic! The signs and billboards were moved on top of the buildings, so it felt a lot less like walking through a Chex advertisement. xD Also, the new city background is a lot more believable than the original one because the buildings have a more realistic structure and shape to them.

- The difficulty curve of the entire CQ trilogy is perfect. I flew through Episode 1 without a breaking a sweat, which I expected for the first episode. Episode 2 was a little trickier - there were a few times where I almost got cemented to the ground in defeat. Episode 3 really, really kicked my butt, but even so, I still had a lot of fun with it. xD

- Episode 3 blew me away. The levels are longer and tougher than the first two episodes, and they all have a greater sense of depth to them. You can definitely tell that the Chex Warrior is reaching the final stretches of his adventure just by looking at the size and scope of some of the rooms and the number of flemoids in them. The only thing that bothered me is the recycled music from previous episodes, but i'm sure Andrew Benson and I will be able to remedy that in due time. ^_^

- FOUR. NEW. FLEMOIDS! Four!? =o Holy hyperspace! Now the Chex Quest universe has full replacements for all of the original Doom monsters! The Stridius (I think that's the name of the tall, lanky flemoids) especially scared the heck out of me whenever I encountered them. It may just be another close-range flemmie, but its massive height and extremely fast moving speed kept me constantly on the run as I tried to search for ammo to zorch it with. The giant creature at the end of E3M3 was really clever too, and it put up quite a fight before finally giving in and returning to its home dimension. The Lost Soul replacements were as annoying as ever, but they were used rarely and at strategic points in the game, so I didn't mind when I faced them.

- The final boss, like the Cyberdemon from Doom, took a lot of time and ammo to take down and was pretty challenging, but it wasn't very intimidating and left me wanting more. I think it would be more fitting if the boss had a better set of sound effects - maybe some kind of loud roar or shriek, or something that makes it distinguishable from the rest of the flemoids and lets the player know immediately that they're in the presence of the strongest creature in the game. Another way to add to the intensity of the fight would be to play around with the lighting, perhaps by making most of the room extremely dark except for the center area where the boss first appears. These are only suggestions, though. As it stands, the boss fight in Episode 3 is the best one out of the entire trilogy, so I won't be disappointed if it remains the way it is. ^_^

Long story short... Chex Quest 3 was a very memorable experience that I won't soon forget. I feel like after all these years, CQ finally got the ultimate conclusion it deserved, and better yet, it made me feel something that I haven't felt in a long time about a computer game. It's like a sense of fear and intensity that completely wraps around you, shutting out all outside forces and making you feel like you're in an intense dream - making you feel like the game's universe is the only universe that exists. Even if it was only for a few hours, it was still an awesome feeling. This feeling was the reason I fell in love with the Doom games in the first place, and with Chex Quest all those years ago.

Assuming i'm not the only person here who got that feeling... thank you, Chukker, for helping us revive the experience once more. ^_^ Kudos!

I'm just letting Chukker know that all of the work he put into the CQ3 project was well worth it. It's not every day that a decade-old computer game gets revived on a scale like this, especially one like Chex Quest that was so successful and fun to play.

Wow, I check up on the Chex Quest online community every few months (only as a lurker) and discovering this had just been released was quite a cool surprise!  Having played Chex 1 & 2 excessively as a child, this was quite exciting and nostalgic for me. (I have most of the cheat codes memorized from those days... charlesjacobi, the no clipping mode, comes to mind)  Very cool stuff, and way to go for completing a large project like this!

Is there going to be an official release of this newest ZDoom besides on these forums?  If possible, I'd like to pass the Chex Quest 3 support over to the Skulltag team so they can implement the fixes necessary for this iwad to run on their program as well.  I am a beta-tester for their program, so I'd like to pass this information on.  The Skulltag team members use ZDoom as their base, and with in-game joining, so I'd like to inform them as soon as possible.

I'm honestly amazed at the amount of news coverage CQ3 is getting on the internet. o_o I searched for Chex Quest 3 on Google and saw all sorts of articles and forum topics about it. People are going nuts, and they keep talking about how this project brings back fond childhood memories. ^_^ (Though this also means that everyone has downloaded the first version and probably will not check for updated versions, but still, it's sweet.)

For some reason, I figured you wouldn't get it. XD

Look through that picture as hard as you can for the words "Hell on Earth". You won't find them. Nonetheless:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doom_II
http://www.mobygames.com/game/doom-ii-hell-on-earth

You don't necessarily put the sub-title of the game on the Title Screen. Chukker has declared that CQ1 is indeed called "Rescue on Bazoik", CQ2 is called "Terror in Chex City", and it is explicitly stated in the new ending text for CQ2 that CQ3 is called "Invasion".

Since they are the same engine, it's not really the same as having the 3 separate games, it's an improvement and extension of the experience, indicated by the the fact that all three episodes in one is called "Chex Quest 3", as if you had added 1 and 2 together.  You can't get CQ3 officially without including the other two. It's a package.

Thus, they are given titles, since CQ3 is the triple episode pack as a whole rather than just the 3rd Episode, in order to be able to refer to them directly. This prevents confusion, also. For example, if I said "CQ1", I could mean either the out-of-the-cereal box version, bugs, differing level architecture, etc., or the first episode of CQ3. So, I could instead say Rescue on Bazoik (I don't know why you folks add an N) to indicate I mean the updated version only. At the same time, context could allow us to use either. Since CQ3 has only one context, this is a correct usage of the sub-title.

So yes, the original CD version of CQ1 is not called Rescue on Bazoik, but the first episode of CQ3 is.

Uggg, I hate these kinds of discussions. Chex Quest is named chex Quest. Chex Quest is Chex Quest 2. When Chucker made Chex Quest 3. He wanted to include the first 2 as one game. Like doom had episodes, Chucker wanted CQ3 to be one entire game, so that why it has differant names. The game that your playing is CQ3, and it's three episodes, not differant games in one mod.

Invasion is correct in that situation either way, as it is not indicating the modified original episodes and the third one, but just the third one, which is named Invasion.

For the record, the name of the game is simply Chex Quest 3, in keeping with the release of the first sequel which was just named Chex Quest 2. The 2nd episode name "Terror in Chex City" is just borrowed from Boingo's mod. I don't remember it ever being given that name when originally released. "Invasion!" is just the 3rd episode name.

I just assumed you GAVE the names to the first two in CQ3 just to differentiate, I didn't say they were called that at release.

And, as I explained (though I believe it was in a confusing manner), CQ3 is the name of, well, what you get in the CQ3 download, whereas Invasion is simply the name of the 3rd Episode, so yes indeedy. :)

The energy pillars in the room before the one with the window are shootable.  Just stand back before you take a shot at them...
Title: Chex Quest 3 is now available for download!!!
Post by: Enjay on October 04, 2008, 02:46:05 PM
That's true, they are shootable.  However, shooting them is not what is responsible for opening the doors.  the doors are actually opened by shooting the walls towards the back of the room.  It may look like they are activated by shooting the energy pillars, but that's only because some shots may miss and hit the wall instead of the pillar.

However, this mechanism is a little obscure - it is possible to destroy everything in the room and, just by chance, to have not shot the correct wall.  Once you've cleared the room, why would you suddenly start shooting unmarked walls "just in case"?  So, if you grab the most recent revised edition of the game, the shootable walls are still there but if you fail to activate them for some reason, as you walk into the next room (the one where you can see the red key from) the doors will open behind you anyway.

That's what I mean. Using an existing source port like that isn't what I was referring two. I was talking about a new, super-cool engine. Using Doom 3 is hardly even acceptable, because it's still commercial, and some would be unable or unwilling to buy it.

EDIT: Also, Replica, no "failing" outside of Forum Games and Off Topic Discussions, please.

I don't see why we couldn't. Making a new engine we kind of need a programer, (or 10). GZDoom has is the best sorceport out there. And it fits on what your saying. Its not as limeted as some people think, GZDoom is our easyest way of doing so If we are to make a really good Chex Quest game.

...How bout the Half Life engine? true 3d, still feels classic, and I think the original went opensource already. or we could go hl2.exe (the Source engine), which is open to developers, I think, therefore we'd just need a little knowhow...

but the simplest to mod would be the original half life, or quake...but HL has cooler options than quake, so thats my idea.

perfect. great way to end the series. the game kept getting harder to the bitter end. the "lack of ammo" applies in cases of wasting ammo or trying to kill all the flemoids on parts were its not important (plenty situations on E3M4 represent a good example of this) and adds challenge to the game. the boss flemoids were loads of fun and challenging (hint: better grab your laz device). just a fantastic series. now to change the subject, has anyone found a way to beat chex quest 3 on supper slimmy? im still working on it but not quite there yet. has anyone else noticed how the flembomination teleports back after you defeat him on supper slimmy if you wait for him to, i thought that was awesome.

Hold up just a second man! Chucker never said that that is the end of the flemoids. The super slimey thing, I haven't tried. The teleporting thing, was always there, All flemoids respawn after a little while. It did this in CQ1, and in the original doom.

Welcome to the Forums!

Replica's right, Chuck never said this was the end...plus, with all the fan projects people have made, it'll NEVER be the end...

And Doom's Nightmare dificulty (Super Slimy) made monsters faster, stronger, and also able to respawn. Chex Quest did this too, and I guess Chuck didn't think it was bad enough to remove, so it stayed.

Start up the thing, set your controls, start a new game, and play some. Then exit through the menu. in the directory, a file named "zdoom (username)" or something to that effect should be there. If not...then you have a problem. that file is a config file that holds your settings...shutting down the engine correctly should save it.

btw this was the greatest gaming experience to come for me in a long while and am a bit sad but proud to have mastered CH3!

I went through on 3rd Dificulty. Had to restart the WHOLE ENTIRE GAME because there was not enough ammo in my grasp to beat the Villa Chex boss...>< I was able to get past it the next time tho. I wasn't very bothered by the stregnth of the flemmies, but that was because (like matg1990 said) I got all the flemoids and didn't have to worry about big groups of them clustering around me. I will say the whole package was awesome...but I'm still pulling for the 4th episode LOL

yes, good call. i thought i might not have the ammo to finish level five on super slimmy and would result in starting over. however it turned out, i had just enough health (as in 9%) and ammo (as in nothin but the large zorcher and spoon) to reach the final room where there is enough of both, health and ammo, lying in the room to defeat the lord of all flemoids.  im all for more chex quest and would love to play more professionaly made maps. The only issue is the story. We've defeated the lord of all flemoids and confiscated the meteorship. im just not sure what there is to add except for fun maps to play.

Well, this texture brings some things into doubt.
(http://img374.imageshack.us/img374/1407/mysteryjj5.png) (http://imageshack.us)

The two Snotfolus symbols. What are they indicating? Also, it appears 3 planets are highlighted. Another strike at Bazoik? A third, unknown planet? Are there still Flemoids invading other planets?!

Then we have this one:
(http://img413.imageshack.us/img413/894/mystery2ib4.png) (http://imageshack.us)

We don't know if the portal is closed! Perhaps Snotfolus is back on the Flemoid's planet, planning another attack, or helping orchestrate the two other attacks that may be going on?

Perhaps the Chex Warrior could find weapons that can turn the Flemoids into harmless goop in their own dimension, so they can actually be defeated by going through the portal to do battle?

the first one is showing 3 dotted spots on a sphere. i assume the sphere represents the planet earth. i dont think they can be planets. the second one shows the slimed planet with the electric energy in the corner. it is simply the oppisite of the other 5 with planet earth and electricity in the corner. the electric energy about to strike the slimed planet represents a massive attack on the flemoids or simply a metaphore for the most powerful zorcher in the game.

My thing with that first one is that if its suposed to be locations on your planet, why arent there 5, or 4? 3 is a random number for locations in a 5 area game...I think its a star map of the Chex solar system, which coincides with Ventris up there...BTW, I think we've come to call the Chex Warrior's home planet 'Ralston'...a good choice IMO

The green planet also has some clouds and polar ice caps...makes no sense. I'd like to think that THAT is Ralston...but due to lack of water, IDK. The big energy makes no sense as a zorcher...the largest zorcher is the LAZ, and besides, zorch is red, not purple...now the TELEPORTERS...those are purple (at least the sparkles and glow is)...

mebe we should get Chuck back in here to explain a few other things...

The energy in the corner is the Portal the Flemoids used. That is a picture if Flemoid Prime, whereas the other pictures display Ralston. Remember, Ralston is shown in the in-between-level screen.

And looking at the first image again, it does appear to be 3 spots on a sphere. Hm...

ya, but if its the planets surface are u saying that it has three existing planets on the planets surface? i dont think any of this predicts the future in the chex world. maybe the past. but is just as likely to be random. y does anyone think that the 2 snofolus sybols means anything? well with that logic then the two boards with that display in the room must indicate 4 lord snotfoluses existing. the portal to the chex planet makes sence. but the green planet is the odd one out in this case and is a secret door containing the laz device (hate to throw in the spoiler but there seems to be a misinterpretation). the laz device is the most powerful zorcher in the game so while the others represent fear to the chex people, this door represents fear to flemoids and shows their home planet. if i was a flemoid i would fear the laz device and so would u.

actually there is no way to predict the chex future because replica asked if we have seen the last of the flemoids and chuck said that he had no further plans. so there is no evidence of the next adventure located anywhere in the game. no need to study the rooms anymore.

the first chex quest shows a writing board with these graphs and math equations in level 3. it has = chuck at the end of the whole thing. all it means is that chuck was the graphic designer. someone can say it was there mathimatical discovery of how to crash the dimention. but that wasnt the intent. the laz device thing is just a simple metaphor just as this is.

I think y'all are making the layout of the level way too complicated. :P It's a level. It's meant to be played. Chukker stated his thoughts on another game. How does what's in the level relate to anything? :P

To bad the moddidn't knotice the double post made. :P

And yes. There was no metaphor. Chucker just hid the LAZ behind a wall with a texture that didn't fit. This is a well known place to put a secret. Now this is really off topic but. Did any one wander if Chucker made any levels in cq1 and 2?

replica, since when is off topic discussion allowed? :P

and how do u know about the laz device thing u didnt create the game?
Title: Chex Quest 3 is now available for download!!!
Post by: Replica on October 22, 2008, 11:41:49 AM
I've created wads before. I've also seen made games before. If I counted how many times I've seen or made a wall texture thats out of place with a secret behind it. I would have alot of counting to do. (The out of place tecture is because the green jst doesn't fit.)

Post by: matg1990 on October 22, 2008, 06:53:23 PM
u r correct, it happens all the time in games. so then as a maker u decide to make the unfit text for the secret door with the laz device. u dont just wanna put in any random texture because u want to make the game seem more appealing. this brings the question as to what to make the texture and how to relate it to what is going on. and with the other textures in the same room the replacement they came up with is nothing less of satisfying the appeal of the room and metaphorically relating to what is in the secret room. in conclusion, although the unfit text is used as secret doors all the time in games, it is still a metaphor that makes the secret door concept more interesting.

agreed.

When I first saw the texture with the two Snotfolus symbols I thought it was a live communication feed between the bridge (I think that is the meteor's bridge) and Snotfolus himself indicating that he is aware of your presence on his ship. I could be wrong but that is just what it seemed to me.

Hee, Hee, it would have been cool if there was a big tv screen then Lord Snotfolus appear on it, kind like in the second level of Hexen where that guy's head shows up on the wall, that part scared me. o_o LOL XD

Looks like Chex Quest 3 doesn't work on the PSP. I'm able to play Chex Quest 1 and Chex Quest 2 on my PSP using Doom PSP 1.4 (http://pspupdates.qj.net/Doom-PSP-v1-4/pg/49/aid/107693) but when I try to use the chex3 wad it gives me this error:

Error: R_InitSprites: No patches found for SPID frame E

Post by: Manny Cav on October 25, 2008, 11:26:13 AM
Ha ha, that's because there is no SPIDE#. There's some DECORATE work in the wad, so if Doom PSP can't process ZDOOM stuff, then it won't work. You have to use something that's ZDoom compatible, either the engine that comes with Chex Quest 3 or one of the latest beta release builds of ZDoom/GZDoom.

I really thought that this is a great end to the main CQ universe :)
Lord Snotfolus is so epic, that I made a super cheap mod involving him (1 minizorcher, 1 super bootspork, about 100 zorch recharges) that I can't even beat yet without codes.

...though one thing disturbes me, why is everyone trying to go all Divinci Code on the texture design?  I was tempted to put Dopefish in [working title Project F] as a texture, but that doesn't mean that there's going to be some commander keen mod in it.

I see you are part of the dopefish clan too. I've never heard of Commander Keen, but DF is quite awesome.

Snotfolus is so awesome I abandoned the idea of two custom bosses to fit him in CQ:PZ. ^^

Why does every one think that this is the end? Didn't say in the ending cut scene "This is the end of the Flemoids"??? No, so it's not the end!!!

I'm with Replica, end of CQ3.

Also, I dont think this is the last of the flemoids. We still havent actually gone to the flemoid dimension and ensured their removal (that will take some doing...), so as long as we use zorchers...its gonna never end. LOL

Actually, I'm going to ask Chucker not to do that if he ever make's another one. Look at it this way, if chucker killed off the flemoids, he would end Chex Quest forever. I just really don't want one in the flemoid world unless he doesn't kill them off.

Killing off the Flemoids wouldn't end Chex Quest by any means. There are more plots and devices we could figure out, such as fighting anamorphic junk food. (props to whoever can figure out what I just referenced)

EDIT: And, to set the record straight on the Flemoids' names, I am revealing a conversation between me and Chukker to clarify this once and for all. I didn't post it before mainly to a sin known as procrastination.

I am pretty positive we always called the demon replacement "Cycloptis", though I do see your point about the naming. There is probably a disparity between the work DC did and the work which another company did on the website and any printed materials. That was handled by completely different people who didn't do much inter communication with our company.

We always named the Quadrumpus with an "m", but this is another case where disparities between the two companies' work appeared.

As for the new cacodemon, to me he is the Super Cycloptis. I would think that should be its common name, but he could still be of the genus Flemoidus Cycloptis Ultricus. Likewise other flemoids like the Flembrane could have genuses for them as well if people want to get creative. That is what the IFC scientists might call him.

Quote from: Manny Cav on September 29, 2008, 10:16:13 PM
I have a few more issues I'd like to run over with you, if you don't mind.

There are a few discrepancies in the names of some of the Flemoids. First, in the Windows 3.1 menu for Chex Quest, the "Pinky" replacement is called the Cycloptis. However, in some of the scanned photos of www.chexquest.com (http://chexquestgallery.webng.com/downloads/CQ_Scans.zip), the Pinky replacement is called the Cycloptus. This name actually makes more sense, since the other Flemoids' names are like Bipedicus, Commonus, Stridicus etc. Which name is correct? Cycloptis or Cycloptus?

Second, in the previously posted pictures, Quadrupus is practically the only name given for the Chex Quest 2 Imp replacement. However, the name Quadrumpus has gotten to be quite common in Chex Quest lingo. That likely came about because someone said Quadrumpus, and everyone else followed the introduced error. Which name is correct there? Quadrupus or Quadrumpus?

Third, what's the official name of the cacodemon replacement? Your files and Chex Quest 3 say only Super Cycloptis, but several die-hards here are adhering to the made-up name "Flemoidus Cycloptis Ultricus" that came about as a result of some not accepting the already given name of Super Cycloptis. The issue has resurfaced now that your mod uses Super Cycloptis exclusively. So, what's the cacodemon's replacement's name?

You just love that "Super Cycloptis" name don't you? As we've concluded that is would be called that as a common name along time ago. I'm still not happy though. :'(

I'm saying it's dead for 88% of the modders, because no one here beside Chucker, Strife, and Boingo have good art abilitys. It's alot easyer for a modder to continue the storys, not add storys inbetween.

Yeah...someone was arguing with me that SRB2 was ZDoom...IT LOADS AND HAS ALL FEATURES OF LEGACY!

Quick OFF: ...IMO, Legacy is good for beginners or those going straight from Vanilla Doom. It keeps the original simplicity, but gives you some good features to mess with. However, ZDoom, even in its Doom in Doom format, is just a bit to complex. Legacy isn't a horrible engine, but I'm not saying ZDoom is either.

Yay, this is good music, I'm not too sure if it fits the "Orignal Chex Quest Style", but still its cool music!  8)

That is some good (and kinda creepy) music right there. props to Andrew.

little side note: it seemed to me that various effects were left out like Chexter's jumping sound and the breakfast munching sound... nothing detramental to the gameplay though, just little asthetics.  :-\

Both those sounds were actually introduced with TUCQ. They weren't in the original CQ.

The Skulltag team has been using the ZDoom SVN for awhile now.  The current release of Skulltag is based on a version between 2.1.7 and 2.2.0.  Skulltag will get chex(3).wad support whenever we feel like updating to the latest ZDoom SVN.

Yes, the problem is....many newer mods like CQ3 and TNCQ G2 will no longer work on Skulltag, due to some DECORATE incapabilites, CustomBulletAttack and the like.

Yes, there are a few things that must be fixed in CQ3, such as texture alignment and changing textures. But yes, a CQ4 Would be Awesome :D I hope a few extra levels are added into CQ3. Any Ideas?

I believe CQ3 will keep its 5 levels, seeing as the previous 2 had 5 levels as well, and I'm sure the design of the levels took Chukker quite a while to complete.  However, if a legendary CQ4 does ever come out, I'd love to see more levels, or just some new mods.

I think that haveing 5 levels for each Chex Quest is fine if it stays to DooM I, but I think if a new Chex Quest was going to DooM II it might need some more levels, 10 maybe.
Title: Chex Quest 3 is now available for download!!!
Post by: ChexCommander on November 23, 2008, 12:38:39 AM
Well, Doom II is one complete episode of 32 levels, just with little breaks in between a few sets of levels.

I never heard anyone porting an official CQ to Doom II just because of the extra official levels and monsters needed.  I think TNCQ G2 is fine for that.

And of course, if Zdoom is bein kept as the engine, there is no longer any need to be tied to any particular game-specific weapon, monster, level or episode format because all of those can be defined using various control lumps in the WAD.
Title: Chex Quest 3 is now available for download!!!
Post by: Atariangamer on November 24, 2008, 08:05:26 PM
Tru.

What would be cool, IMO, is at least 5 levels of game specific CQ. That is, Doom, Doom2, Hexen, Heretic, Strife.

Title: Chex Quest 3 is now available for download!!!

5 levels on the doom engine, 5 levels on the doom 2 engine, 5 on hexen, 5 on heretic, and 5 on strife. All have slightly different features and weapons, and would be cool to see. I do like that with zdoom, its possible to do that w/o changing IWADs, but I'd like it to be native, not forced.

I don't think that we need a Chex Quest for Strife, Hexen, and Hetric ect.

Tru. But I've heard worse.

CQ4 should be retitled Mega CQ or something, and should be like Ultimate Doom, 4 episodes and the like.

If Chex Trek wasn't taken, that could be a Doom 2 mod, with 5 levels to intermission instead of 7 or 8 currently.

...I'm at a loss on what to call the hexen/heretic mod, or the strife...

hexen/heretic was set in older times...mebe Chex Crusades? XD
and strife...with the advanced systems available, maybe CQ: Spyzorz or something...maybe Chex War, but that implies a bloody conflict...IDK. Chex Quest: Cold War...MAYBE

I think your thinking inside the box, we have MAPINFO! We can do anything with any future Chex Quest mods.

I wouldn't opposie a Hetric/Hexen Chext Quest mod, but I don't think its something an offical Chex Quest mod should be made for.
Title: Chex Quest 3 is now available for download!!!
Post by: Atariangamer on November 25, 2008, 01:22:44 AM
the doom 2 idea was just to keep the standard 5 levels a pop...you know how doom 2 goes. you play 7 levels, get an intermission screen, then play 7 more, just like that. now just drop it from 7 to 5 and you got a CQ flow into it. I was planning on MAPINFO, thats where I thought about less levels. and a 4th CQ episode wouldn't need any mapinfo...it would be ultimate doom.

Hey, if you got new tech, take advantage of it.  Unless you're Atari the novelty-dude, of course.  :D

Chex Crusades sounds nice.  And it's got my initials!  ;D

Chex War does imply heavy conflict, and may break the rules of the original CQ, but then again there's also CQ G2 Episode 4, lol.

True.  However, I do see much potential in that mod, whatwith the objectives and flemoids/weps that he's put in.  Unfortunately, the storyline does kinda spoil it, due to it's objectionable content, that completely (as I've said before) "takes the original idea of Chex Quest and throws it off the Empire State Building."

Absolutely not. Way too much ZDoom stuff and DECORATE for that to even work. If Linux does not like the EXE provided, then your best hope is to find a Linux-compatible version of ZDoom or GZDoom.

EDIT: Okay, skulltag is up and running. Now, how do I get it to use the chex3.wad? I tried running it with the command ./skulltag -iwad chex3.wad, and it gives me a "Skulltag cannot run a shareware IWAD, due to licensing" error.

um...

go to manny cav's site (its in his signature) and download the slimlined CQ. rename CHEX.wad to DOOMU.wad and place it in the skulltag directory. then run skulltag with chex3.wad as a PWAD. the CQ3 wad should overwrite the old chex.wad stuff and allow you to play...I think

try it and see.

Or how about just downloading doomu.zip (http://chexquestgallery.webng.com/getwad/)? :D All other things aside, does the latest build of Skulltag even have the necessary modifications to it to be able to run chex3.wad effectively? I don't think it's ready yet. I even tried doing it as you posted and got the familiar error that signifies that it isn't built for CQ3.

Post by: celebi23 on January 12, 2009, 02:33:22 AM
So, having an absolute blast with the game so far, kinda excluding the one kinda confusing part in E3M3: Villa Chex (http://"http://chexquest.org/index.php?topic=1080") :P

So, awhile back, I had the idea of creating a Chex Quest 3 icon in the style of the 2 previous games.  I was kinda inspired by the couple of fan-games starting up around then.  I made a small mod on the CQ2 icon to make the CQ3 icon

(http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b355/eisnerguy1/CHEX1.png) (http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b355/eisnerguy1/CHEX2.png) (http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b355/eisnerguy1/CHEX3-1.png)

When I saw the "Official" Chex Quest 3 icon, I kinda thought to myself, why not make it a bit bigger & in the style of the previous games' icons?  So, I took the colors from the original icon & applied it to the one that I made

(http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b355/eisnerguy1/CQ3-Original.png) (http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b355/eisnerguy1/CHEX3-2.png)

Just a small idea/ suggestion I had

It's not going to work. Read Manny Cav's post.

I think I just died a little inside...oh well. I think the problem is that Wine can't run zdoom with my ATI graphics card. I guess I'll just wait until I get my computer for college with an Nvidia chip in it.

Anywho, I did see the title screen. Excellent work, same quality as the rest of the title screens, if not better!

or gain an older ZDooM for linux build (probably wont work with new games, tho)

It works! mostly...
Zdoom was able to compile itself into working, and I can finally play the glorious Chex Quest 3! Yay installing things the old-school way! ...But I don't have music. :'( I still have sound though.  I installed timidity and everything as it asked, and no errors came up during the compiling. Maybe I'll take a visit to the ubuntu forums.

That aside, awesome work! Now it's like a full, comercial game, with three episodes and everything! Now, did you guys change around CQ 1 and 2? Things seem a bit out of place compared to their DOS counterparts.

@DOS: Did you enable timidity and set it up? it requires a patch set...

http://zdoom.org/wiki/Using_custom_MIDI_instruments

You prolly dont need to worry about the zip file, its for windows anyway. you just need to tell it where a patch set is.

http://tldp.org/HOWTO/MIDI-HOWTO-8.html
or grab one of those at the top to try to gain a midi sytnthesizer.

Congrats on getting ZDooM...best way is to do it yourself (although its easier to do on linux)

I'd pick the newer one for a new release of something or a special version or whatnot.

I believe that the only actually remade level was E2M2: The Cinema, because it sucked so much.

The other levels received some touchups, but E2M2 was, indeed, the one to receive the big overhaul.

Comment: I think the new Cinema level is one of the greater improvements in CQ3 (right after the inclusion of the new levels and flemoids). way better than having a bunch of "Change Me" signs painted all over the place.

I'm not sure if this is quite the place for this, but I need some help. I just downloaded the excellent Chex Quest 3 and am having trouble with E3M2. I can't get to the red key! Help! I get the blue key and the yellow one just fine, but then I get totally stuck and can't figure out what to do. I'd appreciate any advice anybody can give me.

Thanks!

Edit: Okay, I got past E3M2, but now I'm stuck with the resetting lock on the E3M3 Villa level. Any help would be appreciated.

So many people seem to have trouble with that lock...I don't see the problem. I could get through just fine with time to spare on my first run.  :-\

Is it because I've played CQ so much, or is it because everybody else is playing on Super Slimey or something? ???

you can also setup timidity++ ZDOOM Edition with some soundfonts or patches, but XGSoftSynth is BY FAR the easiest...just select the device under the sound options.

(Certian timidity setups will sound better than XG, but thats because its the CRYSIS Soundfont! O_O;)

Ah, yes. It would seem that both GZDoom and ZDoom (http://zdoom.org/News), as well, now have full chex.wad and chex3.wad IWAD compatibility. This is really good. When Skulltag joins in, there will no longer be any reason for this "doomu.wad junk" that's been flying around since TUCQ's conception. Even now, mod makers that are making mods for either of these two engines should now take advantage of this and abandon anything regarding doomu.wad in their mods.
Title: Chex Quest 3 is now available for download!!!
Post by: The Slimeinator on March 03, 2009, 08:11:05 PM
Advantage, you say? It will take hours of sifting through the source code to restore even 1/4 of the DECORATE patch in my WAD back to what it's supposed to be, not to mention the influx of whiners who will complain that my WAD doesn't work with CQ 3.
Title: Chex Quest 3 is now available for download!!!
Post by: Manny Cav on March 03, 2009, 08:13:17 PM
It's also accepting original chex.wad as an IWAD, which means you won't have to fiddle with chex3.wad or use the doomu.wad alternate name.

Actually if the program was done right it can be compiled on x86_64 without any changes what-so-ever.  Mostly the errors resulting are when pointer arithmetic is used or when integer overflowing is abused.

Except for the random Doom music thrown in, I can grantee you that you would tell no difference with SoftSynth. Most of the music in there is some weird Tracker Module music. Whatever it is, it isn't MIDI, and SoftSynth is a MIDI driver.

Woohoo, new music! ^_^ I'm going to have to agree with Slimeinator here and say that the music for E3M1 is really, really impressive. It's been stuck in my head for a day now.

If you want my honest opinion... aside from the instruments, the new songs don't have the feel captured in the soundtrack of the first two episodes. BUT! I consider this to be a good thing rather than a bad thing. Episode 3 now has its own style of music that, in my opinion, fits the whole "the fate of the world is in your hands" theme. Very nice!

I can't wait to see how the E3M4 and E3M5 music turn out. Regardless of whether or not the Bensonator is planning on making songs for those episodes, I think i'll take a crack at my own conceptions of what they might sound like. ^_^

STRIFE APPEARS FROM NOWHERE! :O

Anyway, yes, I agree. E3M5 REALLY needs new music. The Caverns of Bazoik work once - not twice.

QFT... It should be spookier, maybe something like the skedar ship in Perfect Dark

Win2K does work with it, remember, GM? You just didn't DL it because you said the file size was too big.

Funny how Blzut3 always chimes in as soon as we mention Skulltag stuff...

in the end i did download it, but the installation gave me an error that says it only works under winxp

To be fair, Ultimate Doom's fourth episode wasn't really part of the "official" plot... though that doesn't mean we can't throw together five awesome levels for a fourth Chexisode. Boingo was planning something similar for TUCQ called "Thy Chex Consumed," I believe. ^_^

Yeah, but we don't wanna make a DooM copy, do we? I mean, for the name?

Ultimate Doom's 4th episode was mainly a marketing strategy to make current non-doomers or just plain DooM fanatics have a reason to buy a new game.

Hey, who says we hafta conform to that? The engine says 4 Episodes, so lets give em 4 episodes. Doesn't really hafta be a carbon copy of doom with CQ paint on it, lets make it something different.

OVERALL: 4th episode would pwn.

I don't think Strife meant for the name of a forth episode to be "Thy Chex Consumed". He was just saying that it's Boingo's idea is all. Personally I don't know why is matters though, I would perfer a CQ4 instead of just another plotless episode, and Chucker didn't say he was going ot make a forth anyway. ;) Mr. Benson said that he'll make music for CQ4 once Chucker is ready to make it as well. :P

I'd hope that Chex Quest 4, if it's made, would take place in the flemoid dimension. I mean, where else would it take place?
Title: Chex Quest 3 is now available for download!!!

Several fan mods have went that direction, but nothing 'official.' That would surely be an interesting twist.

IMO the flemoid dimension idea seems kinda silly, if you zorch a flemoid to put them back in the flemoid dimension where are they going to go if they are zorched in there own dimension already?

That always had me thinking too... maybe the zorchers in chex quest 4 are set to ANOTHER dimension, besides the Cereal and Flemoid dimension.

Can't we have the game somewhere else? Somewhere entirely new and unheard of? How CAN it take place in a flem dimension when they get sent there? Unless you send them to some holding cell in an area of the dimension, where you unlock it at the end and must zorch all of them all over again?

I believe Boingo's TCC title was really more of a placeholder than anything.

And of course, CQ doesn't have to only be another 4-episode Doom rip-off. It should be an FPS in it's own, only relying on DooM's engine.

Actually, it is still a "rip-off" because most First-person shooters have 3 Episodes, or even games. Trilogy's are used ALOT. A fourth episode would be different.

And I will too. Doom has 4 games (Doom 4 in dev now). certian movies only had one sequel, or 3 sequels. Just because a Trilogy is a standard doesn't mean more or less is a rip.

But I do believe that CQ could have one more episode/location that carries a storyline.

Post by: 75 on March 22, 2009, 01:07:25 PM
I don't think the flemoid dimension as the fourth episode is a good idea. It would probably turn out like 5 levels worth of the caverns of bazoik, and that would get kind of repetitive

The thing that sets CQ apart from doom is its VARIETY of locations and texture styles. Idk about you guys, but Doom2 got very boring because everything looked the same, just dark, disgusting textures over and over again.

Episode 4 should be somehing that continues that style, and brings a lot of intensity. Maybe a final invasion by the flemoids or perhaps this is Chexter's final strike against their largest base on a nearby planet

I don't understand. Why does CQ need an end? You guys aren't very good fans if you want CQ to end. Really, you guys are acting like the doom Community. Why can't CQ live on? It's not going to kill you if it does, and really, every one was excited about CQ3 right? Why are you excited about a nonexciting CQ4 then? Why do you want to have it end at CQ4? After CQ4 (If it comes) you'll want a CQ5 right? So why does it need to end at 4? (No offence... the use of poor fans was just to make you understand.)

How ever said the flemoid dimension had to look like The Caverns of Bazoik? It was used like that in older mods because that set of textures had the most slime on it.

I agree with you. Chex Quest doesn't need a end. IMO it can keep going on as long it doesn't get repetitive like the extra episodes in DooM ,Heretic, and Hexen. After episode three of Heretic all the levels in episodes four and five where boring because they didn't give the player anything new, no new textures, monsters, objects, music, they didn't even make new sky's. That's why I never liked those episodes in Heretic. If Chex Quest keeps adding more stuff and makes it fun I don't see why it should ever end.

In response to about half of what everybody posted: Why is it that everybody thinks that because a fourth game is made the entire series is going to die? A fourth game doesn't mean ANYTHING, other than more awesome levels. 4 doesn't mean the end, 666 means the end. As long as your series doesn't have 666 games, it won't end. (just kidding of course, but no series HAS reached 666 games, so I wouldn't know what would happen...)

Also, the Flemoid dimension doesn't mean the entire world is Caverns of Bazoik-styled. It was made that way in Newmaps because there hasn't been a real picture of the Flemoid Dimension. For all we know, it could have cities, with Flyingg-cars and other stuff. The flemoids are, after all, capable of creating SPACESHIPS OUT OF METEORITES, COMPLETE WITH COMPUTERS AND TELEPORTATION DEVICES. I've personally imagined the sky of the Flemoid-Dimension to be a surreal, green landscape.

There are no barriers to making a 4th game, it's only if Charles Jacobi wants to. We aren't in control of this.

For the record, I never imagined the fourth episode the end of chex quest. It is, however, the end of TUCQ, so there should be some sort of grand finale

I like your ideas TD, I just don't want it to look primitive, that would be really lame

Ahh, what? Just because TUCQ ends on it's forth episode doesn't mean anything. I'd like to point out that TUCQ is a "FAN" project, and Chucker doesn't have to base anything on it. TUCQ is also not going to include CQ3 anyway, do to Boingo already creating his own storyline for episode 3, and 4. I'd like to point out that CQ1, CQ2, and CQ3 are differant games! They're not just episodes, just short games.

Isn't everyone just saying the same thing? Can we just slow down a bit?

WE ALL KNOW THAT THERE DOESN'T HAVE TO BE AN END TO CQ. OKAY?

Also, it seems that everyone has their own ideas about what a sequel-sequel-sequel (quequel?) of CQ would be like.  That's good, in that everyone's got plenty of ideas.  However, I think only Chukker will be able to determine what all the levels really look like.  Unless he needs help if he ever chooses to make another CQ.

Strif3, i SO wanna hear some more music from you. You still have the reputation of the best third-party producer of CQ content to me. XD

That's QFT!

Aww, thank you guys. ^_^ Here's hoping I can whip up some tunes that could quite possibly make their way into CQ3... or in third-party mods at least. xD
Strife's last words BEFORE setting fire to the building JK JK JK

It would seem he's gonna try some more music. We needz it.

Yup yup. ^_^ Here's the deal: When I finish composing some new songs, i'll revive my CQ3 music thread for your opinions, and when i'm sure that i've made something remotely Chexy, i'm going to send Chukker a PM like I did previously with the other songs that made it into CQ3.

Please be patient during this time and resist the urge to poke each other. I'm already starting to smell smoke in this thread. =/

Apparently my old music thread was locked, so i'll post this here for convenience's sake. xD

I took a stab at making a song for E3M4:

http://www.freewebs.com/cyberfreak/chancer.mid

Since CQ3 has unconventional music in comparison to the first two episodes, I tried less at keeping true to the traditional CQ instruments and beats and instead tried to make something that matches the situation in the level. Whatchu fink? ^_^

This seems like quite a departure from what I'm used to hearing form you or in Chex Quest, though I'm not sure how you could "fit" E3M4. The way I'd do it, if I could at all, would be to make something to the tune of, "I've made it this far to get to that meteor spaceship, and I've got to get to it at any cost to save the people." Yeah, that actually does make sense. Another fine work from you, indeed, but I'm having trouble trying to tie this in to what I'm used to hearing from you or Andrew Benon.

This, of course, and any future updates will be sent flying to the Gallery at lightning speed. :P

Indeedsy. ^^

Thank you for the comments, guys. I appreciate it. ^_^

I also have a song that could possibly be used in E3M5. It was originally intended to be the music for the final boss in one of my other games, but after tweaking the instruments, I think it could possibly fit for the final map of CQ3.

http://www.freewebs.com/cyberfreak/cq_final.mid

If this isn't used in CQ3, I would prefer to reserve it for my other game since it took me quite a long time to compose. ^^;

As for the music itself, that's just awesome. I love it. Definitely has that final-map tone, and a few hints of your past work. I definitely think this could work for E3M5.

Aye. I'm working on an action RPG that plays similar to the Legend of Zelda, only with a level-up system.

I was thinking about that, Replica. If it really is too long, fixing it is a simple matter of doubling the tempo at the start until the other instruments come in. ^_^

I just tried out both songs in the WAD. Bravo! Another EPIC WIN by Strife!

I did get to thinking about something, though. CQ 3 doesn't exactly fit in with the style of the Chex Quest games - yet. To fit in with the sequence, there must be another replacement of the Imp from Doom. This has occured in all the games previously, as with a replacement of the Demon, which does happen in Chex Quest 3. Thoughts?

Another minor update... at this point I am going to take a break and decide if I am going to jump into the big task of bringing over TUCQ features and as well as addressing issues that require recompiling the exe.

Version 1.2 changes

- Changed HUD graphics to accomodate flem keys
- Fixed quick exit bug in E1M1
- Corrected redundant secret sectors in E1M1 and E1M3
- Reconciled E3M5's name as "Meteor Spaceship" in the language lump
- Fixed hidden flemoids in E1M5 which could not be attacked by the player
- Created exit locations from slime pit on E2M4
- Eliminated the need for player to locate secrets to complete E3M2 and E3M4
- Removed unnecessary door linedefs in several maps
- Fixed several doors which were flagged as non-repeatable which could be progression stoppers
- Removed secret sector tags from areas that can be reached via normal progression doors or lifts
- Texture errors corrected throughout
- New textures, details and secrets added in a few maps

Most of the new stuff is actually in the first two episodes, like the fancy exits in episode one, the arcades in E2M2, escape routes from the pits in E2M4, some new textures in E2M4 and E2M5, etc. Most of episode 3 was just bug fixing. The only two things I can think of for episode 3 are the retooling of a secret area in E3M2 and another one in E3M4, making them nonessential, and moving the essentials elsewhere.

I've noticed that ever since it came out, Chex Quest 3 has one learning curve error: The Provincial Park is more difficult than the Spaceship.

While it is true that the Spaceship has more Flemoids than the Provincial Park, the Provincial Park presents them in a different way. For example, around 45% of the Flemoids in the Spaceship are Bipedicus and Commonus Flemoids. However, 50% of the Flemoids in the Provincial Park are Stridicus Flemoids and Flem Mines. The two major assaults (by Stridicus Flemoids at the very beginning of the level and by the Flem Mines/Super Cycloptis Flemoids at the end of the level) make it harder than the Spaceship level, which, while containing Lord Snotfolus, has maybe one or two powerful enemies per room... and then a swarm of almost-harmless Commonus and Bipedicus Flemoids. I propose making the Spaceship level harder.

I say increase the toughness of Spaceship on Extreme Ooze/Super Slimey, but decrease the toughness of Provincial Park on Gobs of Goo and downward.

Title: Chex Quest 3 is now available for download!!!
Post by: ChexCommander on May 10, 2009, 05:43:23 PM
If there are any LAZes on E3M5, I say scrap them unless they're secret (I forget, sorry.).

I'd prefer boss fights with less phasing ammo. Shotgun and precisely timed rockets are more fun than just holding down a phasing zorcher.

Fighting the Flebomination, for example. That was fun.
Title: Chex Quest 3 is now available for download!!!
Post by: Manny Cav on May 10, 2009, 05:52:29 PM
The only LAZ device in E3M5 is a secret, but you can also pick up a LAZ Device in E3M3 in a secret area, as well. My Chex Quest 3 Walkthrough details such things. ;) The Flembomination is definitely easy, even on Super Slimey, if you know how to strafe.

Realistically speaking, there has to be a LAZ Device somewhere in Invasion!.
Title: Chex Quest 3 is now available for download!!!
Post by: ChexCommander on May 10, 2009, 06:27:06 PM
Yeah, but it's a lot more fun if you don't use it. Then again, as a single-player game, I guess it depends on who's playing to decide what to use.

Strafing? Hah. I beat it the, well, uh (I can't really say old-school, since it was in chex.exe), better way by just turning and shooting. But strafing's fun too.
Title: Chex Quest 3 is now available for download!!!
Post by: Atariangamer on May 10, 2009, 10:07:03 PM
I've used the WASD+MOUSE for everything, even on the oldskool engines. if you can set the mouse for movement and its turning sensitivity up (and forward/backward sensitivity way down), and set the strafe+forward/backward keys...I did it. easier to move, and more like life's movement. You dont move everywhere by turning and going forward, you also side step and backpedal in directions. this cant be done with only turning and forward/back. Strafe is as important as both of them.

However, I'd LOVE to have more ammo on most of the levels. The last level was kinda easy, even with just rockets, but then again, I last played through on the 2nd difficulty. need to bump it up and see if it improves.

It's a real challenge to get, especially on super slimey because you have to face those Super Cyclopti of doom yet again. It's hard to get in and out of that patio unscathed.

There's tricks to though, like chargin the LAZ then opening the door so the first thing they see is the laz shot.

If you know the real operation of the LAZ's firing, you can do all SORTS Of damage with it. When you fire the shot, the angle is remembered, so if you fire North, it remembers. WHen the shot hits, it does a certian large part of damage with little splash. HOWEVER, from your current position in the direction of the shot, about 45 hitscans go out from you, providing more damage after the fact. If you run into a room and fire, then just before the shot bursts get a bit closer, you can deal a bit more damage to the front lines (and maybe some in the back)

Yeah, WASD is cool and all, and great for Skulltag or modern games/engines, but I have GZ set so I can use either WASD or classic arrow keys.  I just like sometimes using arrow keys and turn. Well, actually I've only used WASD in the last 6 months.  All Skulltag last summer was keys only.

And how many times in life do you actually strafe or sidestep?

#1: The Music is awesome in all of the games I love it  ;D

#2: I use WASD in pretty much every PC game I own (Except for ones like Starcraft or Silent Hill 2) but thankfully you can customize the controls so it's good for whoever is playing it.

I remember when I was younger the mouse was set up so that it did all the moving I mean if I moved the mouse forward the character would move forward which feels really awkward now.
Yay Chex Quest!!!

Hang on. What's WASD?

It's on the keyboard layout it's the keys I use for moving

It goes
QWERTYUIOP
ASDFGHJKL

So W is for moving forward and, A, S, and D for moving left, backwards, and right.

That's what lots of people use for FPSes and stuff and what I use because it is the most comfortable for me.

When you use the W, A, S, and D keys instead of the arrow keys.  Personally I won't play a game if it won't let me use the arrow keys unless its a really good game, but I haven't met such a game.

Huh. I use arrow keys. I've encountered WASD before, though, I think. In Cave Story.

Andrew Benson, a.k.a. drooben, from the previous two games returned to make music for E3M1: Central Command and E3M3: Villa Chex, but our own Strife from these forums made the rest of the music. After 10 years, the Chex Quest 3 music was surely no disappointment. Indeed, it could be said that the Chex Quest 3 music is my most favorite of them all. 8)

I heard that Chuck (I think that's his name) changed a good deal of stuff (To make it better) especially the Cinema level but I haven't played Chex Quest 2 in a looooooooong time so can someone fill me in on what parts of Cinema were changed? I know those Arcade machines weren't there before but I think I remember a vent going from each theater with a Flemoid Larva in it that isn't there anymore.

It all depends on personal preference but using the Arrow keys in most modern FPSes would be incredibly awkward and with WASD you can reach the other keys much either to do things.

Like In Aliens vs Predator 2 for Xenomorph I have crouch set to Q (Actually I have crouch on Q in pretty much everything including Doom and Chex Quest) and WallCrawling toggle set to E (Whereas in other games I use E for actions and activating things but the Xenomorph just uses his claws for work  ;)) and then all the weapons and other things are easily reachable too.

And when I say "WASD" I mean "Mouse and WASD" since otherwise it would be even more awkward but thankfully pretty much all games are customizable for everyone's personal preferences.

pikmintaro, E2M2 is practically a brand new level altogether. The only recognizable landmarks are the triple theaters. E2M2 went through the biggest overhaul of any of the original levels. The creator's name, by the way, is Charles Jacobi, who was the lead artist for the original games, and the project leader of Chex Quest 3. He goes by the name "Chukker" on the forums.

Ok that's what I thought people were saying.

I remember the Ticket Booth and the screens but that's pretty much it.
I remembered the Larva in the vent because when I was playing it for the first time a long time ago it suddenly came up in my face when I went into the vent and made me jump... after that I had a dream about having a pet Flemoid Larva on a leash...

Of course, I only use WASD for first person shooters or sidescrollers that require a mouse for aiming.  Besides that, it's all arrow keys (they're usually the default anyways).

EDIT: Slime, you used WASD for Cave Story? That platformer has the arrow keys for default and A,S,Z,X,W for other functions, I thought...
