I figured I'd create a separate topic devoted to the status of our server. Since all the other topics have been overrun with Skulltag talk, this topic is going to strictly be for status updates-- planned updates, downtime, server related errors, etc. Cool beans? At some point I would like to get some sort of web interface up and running where people can check the status of the server without having to come dig through this topic.
I'd also like it if Atarian, CC, and co posted any status info related to Skulltag specifically here. Keep all the status junk in one locale. ;)
Note from CC: This topic is to be used for Server updates only. Many of these posts will be from BC, Atarian, or me. Posting about general multiplayer ideas or recommendations may be posted in the Multiplayer Anyone thread or any thread concerning that topic.

Bump.
The server is online.
Everything went smoothly with the server configs which allowed for an early return to service. Yay! Atarian and CC are going to continue Skulltag and voice testing. :)
- We have a Mumble voice server up and running. Please PM me with your desired username and password, as well as an email (for server authentication) so I can get you registered.
- Remote access is working.
-
Remote Access is good! Different refresh style (though I can't wait for a 1024x768 or a 1280x1024 resolution...that super wide screen is KILLING me XD)
I also tested Mumble during Skulltag. BC was able to hear me even as I zorched flemoids! but I'm not sure that goes both ways...but thats why we test.
-
Soon the physical server updates will correspond with the Skulltag server updates, but until testing is over, they'll be all over the place. Right now, my Win 2003 server is up, but you'll have to wait for Atarian and CC for Skulltag specific updates.
@Atarian, I'm glad the new remote access is working well! I hope the difference in refresh is a ton better. I'll PM you when the server box is unattended and you can reset the resolution. XD
-
As of 10/24/09 (and possibly earlier), the VNC is down.
BC knows of this, but is currently AFK, and can't fix it.
Mumble and ST are still in their places, and their opperation is unaffected.
-
I'm about 40 minutes south of where my rig is located. I'll be back tomorrow night to take a look at the VNC and fix whatever is wrong. Atarian and I talked and I'm thinking we're going to install a secondary remote access (the one we were using before) as a backup.
Atarian, I hope you don't mind... I'm going to bold your status update so it doesn't get buried. :)
-
This topic given a pin. Seeing as we have 2 topics that are the exact thing, I'm merging them and using this one for all status updates. Carry on.
-
Thank you, CC. I'm not sure how we ended up with two threads. :)
I have to post this from the iPhone, because our power cut out again. The snow has been messing things up apparently. That being said, it's obvious there won't be any skulltag or mumble tonight! I'm just going to keep the server off tonight. So...
The server is currently offline due to weather.
-
The server is currently offline due to weather.
:( Okay. :(
-
The server and Skulltag server are back online.
Sorry guys, we had some nasty weather last night that kept cutting our power out. Unfortunately, Ogden seems to have power issues no matter what the weather is doing, so just be prepared to have this happen again sometime. :(
Anyways, I put the Skulltag server back online as well with all the defaults that Atarian and CC set up.
-
When I came home today, my modem was not connecting to the internet. I power cycled and it's all good now. That happens every once in a while (yay Comcast), but I'm going to call and complain anyway.
-
Server is still up, Comcast is now throttling broadband.
I don't think that Skulltag and Mumble alone will trigger this new throttling software, but I'm afraid when you add in our other internet activities, this might be a problem for us. Here is some more info:
According to the document, Comcast's throttling with have two trigger conditions. The first is activated when using more than 70-percent of a subscriber's maximum upstream or upstream bandwidth in a 15 minute span. The second trigger kicks in when the neighborhood Cable Modem Termination System becomes severely congested and evidence indicates that the cause stems from the offending subscriber.
Internet throttling begins when either triggers are tripped, forcing bandwidth traffic to throttle down. The effect endures for at least 15 minutes, or until the average bandwidth utilization rate drops below 50-percent for 15 minutes. Comcast said that certain traffic won't be throttled: low-priority traffic will still zip through uncongested nodes at close-to-normal speeds.
Comcast was previously using protocol specific throttling methods, which people were complaining adamantly about.... so now on to this new form of throttling. Comcast should work on upgrading their network so all users can have a better experience, without so much need for throttling.... but I don't see that happening ever, as Comcast is one crappy freaking company. Unfortunately, in Utah I have very little in the way of choices. Hopefully, when I move I can hop onto a more legit ISP.
We generally are gone on the weekends, leaving our bandwidth unused (unless we are torrenting), so this should not mess with weekend matches.
I was not sure where else to put this, but I figured it was a status update of sorts-- giving y'all a heads up on a possible connection compromise. Anyways, please let me know if y'all experience anything that seems like Comcast meddling. I will call them up and give them hell. Comcast: the only company who will penalize you for using what you paid for.
-
Oh no...thats great. LOL at the last point.
-
The server is currently OFFLINE.
Sorry guys, I had to pull the server offline today. My internet slowed to a crawl... apparently I triggered Comcast's stupid bandwidth cap. I'm fighting with Comcast as we speak, but I'm going to keep the server offline for a while. If anyone wants to schedule an official match, I can put it back online, but until then I'm going to let it sit. I've noticed recently the server activity has been next to nothing, whereas my electricity bill skyrocketed. :-\
-
ohh man... i never got 2 go on when other ppl were on :(
yet...
-
maybe we could schedule private matches using another program
-
Yeah, I think something like that would be a great idea! That way, everyone would be aware of when planned pick-up games and official matches were being held. If we could integrate Wake-On LAN (y'all turning my PC on remotely) into that, it would be super spiffy. Maybe we could incorporate it into our calendar system? Let's find another topic to continue this conversation in though since this is for status updates. :)
-
Server is being updated.
I wanted to keep this on the downlow until I knew whether or not it was going to happen... but it is official... we're getting a completely new server. Rambus is being replaced with a rig sporting a dual-core AMD, 2+ gigs of RAM, and SATA drives. Not bleeding edge by any means, but a huge technological leap compared to the Rambus rig. It'll save me some money as far as electricity consumption goes too. This is going to be happening sometime in the next 2 or so weeks. Since we've already done this once, it shouldn't take very long to re-config the server and prep it for winter break. :)
-
Tru, tru...
Good call, BC!
-
AWESOME!
-
Sweetness! Now for a full Armageddon Invasion 2 public match on Nightmare... XD
Good luck with the bandwidth on that baby.
-
Good luck with the bandwidth on that baby.
Ha, thanks! Hopefully Comcast will play nicely with me this time around. :facepalm
I'm really excited about this whole thing. I think updating the rig will weed out some of the problems... like lag... that we have been experiencing along the way.
-
Old server is offline, new server is being built!
Hey guys, sorry for all the downtime. I'm hoping to roll out the new server sometime this week. Here is the specs on the new server PC. I hope everyone is excited! Maybe we can get some matches going while everyone is on winter break. :)
CPU:
AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+ (Dual Core, 2.1 GHz + overclocked to however much I decide)
2000MHz Hyper Transport
Motherboard:
ECS Black Edition Motherboard A780GM-A (Not very keen on ECS boards)
AMD 780G Northbridge
ATI SB700 Southbridge
ATI Radeon HD 3200 onboard (What a waste for a server PC..)
Atheros LAN chipset
Wake-On LAN enabled (Atarian and CC can remote start my PC)
RAM:
2 gigs of DDR2 Corsair 1066 RAM (Nothing special)
PSU:
Antec TruePower, 380 watts
OS:
Torn between Windows Server 2008 R2 Web Edition and Suse/Debian/Ubuntu.
Pretty much, this rig has everything we need. A solid up to date LAN port, SATA enabled, way less power consumption, and tons more powerful than our aging server. I'm hoping this will take care of the lag some of y'all exerpienced.
-
Sweet!
Looks like I came in just in time!
-
Epic!
-
Hurry up and get the server up so I can come on and take you down with a shotgun!
I mean.. A super zorcher! :P
-
You know an ATI Radeon HD 3200 isnt that bad, I used it for a while before upgrading to a 4890.
It plays Cod4 800x600 on medium settings, 30+ fps; Crysis 800x600 medium-low settings 20 - 30 fps (unless you're staring at a marker flare in your face - 10-15 fps)

Sorry guys, I've been having some hardware drama. My main rig is currently toast and my laptop has decided to misbehave too, so I have not given the server the attention it needs. Depending on what my main rig decides to do, I might need the stinky server for school. :facepalm
Things are kinda hectic right now, but I'll let y'all know when I can get this thing online in some form or another.
The ATI Radeon HD 3200 is a really great onboard GPU. That's why I was bummed it was just going to be used for the server! Le sad.

NOOO!!! I was really hoping for my first online match! That map you guys use is just too cool!
I wish I could help, I've been getting a lot of first hand learning about servers for businesses since my dad works in that field.

When, when, when?!
I want to play on the server!

Don't worry, Atarian or someone else might be able to host a quickie one-day match over vacation.
-
I was just thinking, I bet I could host a game since I have a monster rig :)
If I only know how.

Definitely! With a ton of people out on vacation, I'm sure y'all will have a ton of hosters to pick from. :)
I'm really sorry about the server being offline for so long. School (finals mainly) and work caught up with me... and then all my rigs (minus the server) decided to crap out.
Unfortunately, I'll be leaving for Texas on Wednesday and I don't think I'll have the server ready by then. Especially since it ended up being retrofitted for my end of semester schoolwork. That and I'm having a really hard time getting a remote access solution up with cross platform support. :(

Oh man, a hoster! Mob, there are some FAQ threads that'll help you with hosting, but I bet Atarian or CC could help you out. They're pro!
-
...BC, even though my internet is about half the speed of yours, I have yet to find a bandwidth limit on it...I bet I go over 2GB of data in and out a day, be it downloads, torrents, updates, hosting servers, playing online games, or just general browsing and YouTubing...yet I've never had a decrease in speed, nor have we gotten a warning about using it too much...wow.

Well, it sounds like you don't have Comcast! Lucky. They're absolutely insane.
-
We got the local service...Phone, Cable, and Internet service.
-
I'd love to host, but my router has a dynamic IP, and somebody else who lives here insists on keeping it that way.
-

Ah, lucky! The only thing around here is Comcast and Verizon Fios, and fiber is too much for the present. You don't have to deal with friggin' bandwidth caps...
-
I'll host whenever you guys want to. Im hosting a match right now with some of my friends.
Same server name and password
-
Long time, no talky.... :facepalm
Things got complicated, sorry guys. But I've got my degree, I'm out of school, and I'm ready to rock this 24/7 server thing... at least until my house sells and my computers become nomadic creatures. I'm thinking I've got at least half the summer until my house sells though.
Oh, and I've got an even more updated rig to offer -- AMD Phenom II X2, 4+ gigs of RAM. I need to build it though!
Soooo, until that happens here is the timeline as it stands:
- The new Ubuntu comes out on 4-29 (Thursday). Hopefully, I will be able to obtain and install it that day.
- Install and configure VoIP client (Mumble/Murmur) this next weekend, May 1st and on.
- The new Mumble/Murmur allows for self-registration, so registering will be on y'alls terms from now on.
- Establish remote access for Atarian during the week of May 1st.
- Get Skulltag up and running based around his schedule.
I haven't talked directly to Atarian yet, but I'm hoping he's still down. Let me know, Atarian! XD
This all sounds easy in theory, and hopefully it will be, but we may run into some snags along the way so bear with me.
In summary:
The server is currently OFFLINE and IN PIECES.
-
Don't forget me! ;)
-
Don't forget me! ;)
I didn't! Only, it was when I powered off my laptop that I realized I hadn't included your name. Doh! XD

Stuff like that happens to me too just before I go to bed. No problem. XD

I should be down for some of it, at least...
CC should be good for the rest. I have no idea what my job situation will be this summer, so IDK.

Forgot to reply! No worries at all, Atarian. Do as much or as little as you'd like with the server. I know things get busy when you're planning on having a summer job. :)
I'm really excited, guys. Before, we had the right formula and (mostly) the right equipment, but the rig running Skulltag and Mumble was just too old and decrepit, and it was causing unnecessary spikes in my bandwidth --bad port or poor drivers, I'm not sure. Commicast was also starting to get nasty, and my power bill was a good deal higher, oy. BUT, I think we've got the right rig this time around. One that is a ton more eco and bandwidth friendly. So lets hope this works!
-
Good deal! So we're actually going with an Ubuntu rig this time, no WinServer'03?
-
Yep, that's the plan! Hopefully Ubuntu will be nice to us. Since I did a Mumble server in WinServ3k I've got my mind wrapped around the process a bit more and can recreate it in Ubuntu. Skulltag was also pretty straightforward since I had managed to get it running in Ubuntu during our very early beta testing. The only snag I can see is remote access. Supposedly, it's easy, but we'll see. ^-^
-
Sweetness, we get remote access to a Linux build this time! I'm pumped. :)
-
Me too! I'm downloading the new Ubuntu right now. I already installed Netbook Remix on my Sony yesterday.... tis sweet.
I'm a bit behind though because my Mom sprung a trip to Houston on me at the last minute and needs a house and pet sitter while she's away. I'm not in school and am not working yet, so that responsibility defaults to me. I'm thinking the new semi-launch date for the server itself is Monday or Tuesday. Sorry guys. :-\
At least we've got this awesome community of willing hosters that set up fun matches. I figure I can supplement them a bit with this 24/7 thing. :)
Edit: Ubuntu 10.04 LTS is up and running, the router and firewall are all set to go, and I have Mumble up as well. Need to set Mumble/Murmur up all pretty-like before I can allow public access though. I'm leaving for the weekend, unfortunately, but I'll be back on Sunday or Monday to get the rest done. Catch y'all then.
EDIT (as of 5/22/10): The 24/7 server is now up and running. -CC
-
err to whoever is incharge of this joint can we get the skins, CQ arena, and the lounge added as pwads? (and possibly Chex quest 3 as a custom I wad?)
-
We've been looking at ways to get files to addon...the dedicated server package is being stubborn.
-
I could help out by making a server whenever I am at my Dad's. :)
-
The server will be offline until the middle of August.
Not sure how well used it was, but the 24/7 CQU server is going down for at least 3 weeks. It will be back up in a new city, with a more reliable connection, and with Mumble enabled.
-
bummer, I just downloaded everything.
-
I can host games
after 9 PM pretty much anytime if I'm not busy/in class, let me know if you're interested
-
bummer, I just downloaded everything.
It's going to be down for a while. We're still moving in and do not have any internet yet. My furniture doesn't arrive until the middle of October. :(
-
How's the move coming, BC?
any updates on the server?
-
Hey 75, sorry for the lack of updates. :-\
My move southward has left a lot of my equipment split between my apartment and my parent's storage. I'm hoping to collect all my things and find a proper table to put the computer up on sometime soon. I'm very eager to start back up again and if I have time, I may try and boot the sucker tonight in a temporary location.
I will have to redo a lot of our settings in the router because I switched providers and Uverse uses this joke of a router/wireless access point combo made by 2wire. It offers practically no options for port forwarding and QoS. I set it up so that I could put my personal router back on the network and have it be the access point, but in the process had to put it out in a DMZ zone and pass packets over the WAN port on the 2wire. I don't know if this will bottleneck things yet, so I'll definitely need y'all for a test run. Also, I'm curious if AT&T makes a fuss of it.
I've been seeing that you've been hosting a ton of games in the meantime. That is so awesome of you... I know everyone really appreciates it. :)
I'll be sure to make an effort to keep everyone up to date.
-

I can't host very often or for very long, and sometimes it lags, but it's a good way to test my mod and have a bit of fun

Your servers are pretty fun indeed. Will there be a 24/7 server for your mod eventually?

That's not a good idea for P14, INV04 needs help to run. The deathmatch maps are ok, though.
I couldn't do a 24/7 server on my hardware.

Yeah. I meant sometime in the future when we have more maps. Yeah, INV04 has too many spawns in 2 waves.
-
i thought 75's mod was pretty much a replacement for the other wad. because, it's just a converted doom2. no offense intended to anybody involved. the only novel thing about the other server was the lounges. in the meantime, we can still use doom2+cqlounge36+cqarena+cqskins, until 75's mod is in sufficient condition, then host it on the 24/7 server. one, it makes less servers, two, it makes less PWAD mess, and 3, we're making it more CQ and less based on doom.
-
it's just a converted doom2
That's wrong. My mod doesn't rely on any Doom 2 monsters or code whatsoever, it works totally off of chex3.wad.
And besides, didn't you notice the new weapons, new textures, levels?
TNCQ G2 and cqarena WERE a converted doom 2, however. That combination produced a graphic swap of Doom 2. Skulltag still thought it was doom2.wad, that's how you got the ST weapons like the grenade launcher and the 10k.
My mod doesn't hack the doom 2 setup, it includes all of the skulltag weapons in its DECORATE code.
It's a lot more than a replacement for cqarena
1. it's got maps instead of relying butchered skulltag (Doom 2) stock levels
2. it has properly coded invasion flemoids that don't shoot you with hitscans from a distance
3. New behavior for some stock flemoids
4. Brand new weapons
5. New powerups
6. correct pain and death states (if you get zorched, you actually get zorched. If you get slimed, you actually get slimed)
7. TERRAIN lump to give splashes and damage in slime pools
8. GLDEFS for zorch pain and death states (in P14 only the player and maximus were implemented)
9. correct GLDEFS for every light fixture
...
I used to have a list like this, but I stopped trying because it was too hard to remember everything
-
OHNONONONO i meant what u said, that the other wad was just converted doom2, not yours. I was just thinking it'd be easier, but whatever...
-
OHNONONONO i meant what u said, that the other wad was just converted doom2, not yours. I was just thinking it'd be easier, but whatever...
Well yeah, that was the whole point of Manny's mod, to convert the CQ stuff to a Doom2-compatible Skulltag version.
-
idk, i just saw it as a step away from doom and a step in the direction of Chex independence.
-
Right, but independence wasn't the point of CQ Arena. CQ Arena was made to maintain compatibility with Skulltag and DooM, so we could play all the good ol' DooM/ST stuff with a CQ theme. More of an aesthetic wad than one with new maps and such. For example, we could play Domination and Legendary CTF using CQ graphics and a CQ-looking Skulltag as opposed to a DooM-like one. Obviously, 75's wad has taken part of the idea of CQ Arena and run with it, pretty much making a TC of Skulltag into CQ multiplayer.
-
I haven't forgotten about y'all, I'm just trying to find a decent spot in my tiny apartment for a server. :facepalm

That's what 75 has been doing. :)
-
well, if you want to play Doom2 but with CQ graphics, fine with me, but imo 75's mod is better, which is why i think it would be a good idea to host 24/7
-
well, if you want to play Doom2 but with CQ graphics, fine with me, but imo 75's mod is better, which is why i think it would be a good idea to host 24/7
...that wasn't the point. I wasn't comparing which one was BETTER, I was saying what their individual [and different] uses were! :facepalm
-
no my point wasnt to refute you but to go back to my original point
-
Aight, that makes sense then, 24/7 Skulltag Pack WOULD be pretty cool if we could get it working. You can still do CQ3 co-op on it, right?
-
Yes, you can still do CQ3 co-op, at least in the current version.
-
yes, you can do chex3 co-op
but there's something odd about it.... even though I set it to survival co-op, it doesn't spawn the flemoids unless you specifically tell it to (on EVERY map) :facepalm
You'd think that would be implied... I might just have to make a script that prints the console variable
As of right now, the skulltag pack definitely isn't ready for 24/7 hosting, there's only six deathmatch maps and four invasion maps, one working, two short ones, and one that needs help on wave 10.
Also, I found a weird bug where obituaries switch to the friendly fire obituaries and don't go back. The only cure for this I know if is to start a new server... it's a skulltag bug, but I can't report it since I don't know what causes it :-\
-
75 what is your server address? So I can add it to my custom servers so I can see it whenever there is a Chex game open.
-
I usually call it "Chex Skulltag Pack P14", you can find it with Doomseeker
-
So anything with chex in the title? I'll look for it then.
-
Anything with "Chex Skulltag Pack" in the title is a server with my mod
-
Okay.... lots and lots of fail over the last few weeks...
- My "server closet" (also known as my laundry room) doesn't have any non-utility oriented plugs in it, so the server is without a home. It is hanging out on the floor near my TV at the moment.
- The AT&T 2-Wire router (that I have forced to push routing to my actual router) hates hosting with a passion. The darn thing bogs down EVERYTHING when I host through it. I can't watch Netflix worth crap when something is being hosted.
- The little hosting communication I have managed to push through has been noticed by AT&T and they reminded me of their anti-hosting policy via e-mail.
I think I miss Commiecast...
I have no clue what the solution to this is, or if there is one while I am currently living where I am, in an AT&T exclusive building. I might not be able to host until I freaking buy a house again... :'(
-
@#$%@#!!!

?
I think he's angry at our current server situation. Quick, someone point him in the direction of the nearest U-verse building!
-
Unfortunately at the moment I cannot temporarily host either for some unknown reason.
-
I can host when I have time

I can host a temp server every once in a while for a few hours on my laptop, and hold about 6-8 players on my conmection. However, I can't host anything remotely deticated on my wireless for too long, because my connection drops out if I try to download anything, or skulltag may decide to "frag" my laptop by freezing it entirely.
PM or E-mail me if I need to host a temp server
tl;dr Can sometimes host, but only for a few hours at a time.

At the time of this post, the only multiplayer chex server hosted 24/7 is on Canadian Bacon #10 - Chex Skulltag Pack
See this topic for more information: http://www.chexquest.org/index.php?topic=3303.0
(Posting here too to keep people from getting confused)

It would make sense that it would be posted here seeing as how this is the pinned server status thread. Gotta jump on this bandwagon sometime soon.

Then, I'll update it with a link to my [IFOC] Server hosting

Which servers are still up? I was considering hosting my own for my community, but if there are any community servers I won't need to.
My Bitdefender keeps flagging Zandronum downloads as a virus so I have to fix that too.

the post above you is from 2011.

I noticed. Why is this thread open and the very first thread stickied in this forum if it isn't meant to be replied to?

i have no idea.

75 is the best person to ask.
I know the IFOC servers are still up.
Darkstone and I were playing The Lost Quest survival the night before last.
If you type "ifoc" into the search in DooMSeeker, then the servers should come up.

Haven't heard that name in a while.
