Note: To those new to Skulltag, read the update first! This contains the newest information about current CQ Skulltag servers, as we may be phasing out some of the older, redundant materials.
Skulltag Client
So you want to play Chex Quest United Skulltag, eh? Well, best place to start is by downloading Skulltag!
All you need to do is download the stable release (http://skulltag.com/download/). Should be 98a.
Use the installer if you're completely new to modern DooM engines. Otherwise, the zipped versions work fine.
Next, you'll need some WADs. These are the game files that contain graphics, maps, and sounds.
We'll be using Chex Quest 3, TNCQ:G2 Base, and the original Chex Quest IWAD.
- Chex Quest 3 (http://www.chucktropolis.com/downloads/ChexQuest3.zip)
- TNCQ:G2 Base (http://gallery.xboltz.net/getwad/doom2.zip)
- Chex Quest IWAD (http://gallery.xboltz.net/getwad/doomu.zip)
Now, you may be wondering about the file names. TNCQ:G2 is basically DooM 2's IWAD, but with all content replaced with Chex Quest stuff. It allows us to play normal maps and mods. The Chex Quest IWAD is named 'doomu.wad', as it really is a copy of The Ultimate Doom, just missing all the DooM parts, and the first few things being Chex Quest itself. Also, Chex Quest 3 contains the whole v1.4 release, but you only need the chex3.wad part from it.
You also will want to get:
- Chex Quest Arena Beta 4 (http://gallery.xboltz.net/downloads/Chex%20Quest%20Arena%20Beta%204.zip)
- Chex Quest Skins v1 (http://gallery.xboltz.net/other/Chex%20Quest%20Skins%20Version%201.zip)
- CQLounge36 (http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?hyjnznelnym)
This replaces most of Skulltag's DooM-like stuff with Chex Quest related items. The second one also adds skins to Skulltag that are more Chex Quest like. The last one is the CQLounge that will be in use during the day for hanging out till night time, when we schedule matches.
Voice Chat Server
Included with our CQ server is a voice chat server! Now you can keep the game flowing w/o having to stop and type a message!
You will need the Mumble Voice Chat Client (http://mumble.sourceforge.net/). For more information on how to use, and to register your name on the server, send a personal message to the user 'brain candy'. She is over that aspect of the server.
In your PM, please include your:
- e-Mail
- Desired Username
- Desired Password
She will message you back with details on how to connect to the server.
Connecting To The Server
Now, you have Skulltag, you have the voice chat, whats next? Actually getting in the server!
Navigate to your Skulltag directory (or your Start Menu folder) and open Doomseeker. This is the included server browser. All you need to do is search the list for a server starting with 'Chex Quest United'. This is our server, and will always be preceded with that phrase.
The server is also private, so not just anyone can get in.
Sorry but you are not allowed to view spoiler contents.
Enter that into the Server Password prompt, and it will let you in!

Be sure to set up your player! Choose your skin, color, and nickname. Also, you may want to change your control scheme according to your favorite setup.
Hope to see you on Skulltag sometime soon!

UPDATE 6/15/2011
If you're looking for some multiplayer Chex Quest action, try the CQ Skulltag Pack! It's currently hosted 24/7 on Canadian Bacon #10. You do not need Doom 2 to play, everything you need to play is available for free.
If you have never used Skulltag before, here is what you need.
The Skulltag engine, which comes with Doomseeker: http://www.skulltag.com/download/ - Install this first.
Chex3.wad: http://www.chucktropolis.com/downloads/ChexQuest3.zip - This is your IWAD. Put that in your Skulltag directory.
The .pk3 is posted on wadhost.fathax.com, so you don't need to download the PWAD. Wadseeker will find the resources you need automatically. Just be sure that you have the right version of Chex Quest 3
Sorry but you are not allowed to view spoiler contents.
Once you have Skulltag installed, and Chex3.wad in your Skulltag directory, open up DoomSeeker (its icon is a red letter 'D'). In the upper right of the window is a search box. Type in part of the name of server in that box (usually "Chex " is enough to make it the only server shown).
These are the servers I am currently hosting:
IWAD: Chex3.wad
<[IFOC] Server> Chex Skulltag Pack PXX-XX Duel
<[IFOC] Server> Chex Skulltag Pack PXX-XX Zorchmatch

I'm hosting one 24/7. Been trying to ask Brain Candy how to set it up.
You can get it down to 18kbps of audio, so its really low latency even when transmitting.
Problem being it doesn't like to use the DNS I set up.
EDIT: Just tested it again, it does work.
Sorry but you are not allowed to view spoiler contents.
So when you get Mumble installed, just start it up, and you'll get a server list. Click Add New, and put in any label you like, enter the address, default port, and a username.
When you get on, right click and register yourself. That allows you to make temporary rooms that aren't in the main area, useful for stuff like Skulltag matches or otherwise. It also links positional audio to some games (currently there isn't one for Doom/Skulltag :'(), so its useful for much more than just basic chat.
You can go into the audio settings and set your bitrate and packet size, and with large packets and low bitrates, you can get it very low. And thanks to the codec, it still sounds decent (Better than the original Counter-Strike's ><). I can host several people with no lag, and the less lag the ST server has to deal with, the better it is for the gamers.
I'll try to ask Brain Candy once again about permanent rooms.
UPDATE: Got permanent rooms that are free to join by everyone.
Left 4 Dead is there, Minecraft is there, and Skulltag is there.
There are 3 sub-channels in the Skulltag channel: Blue Team, Deathmatch, and Red Team.
Deathmatch is for all free-for-all games, and the team channels are for...team games.
If you register yourself (right click on your user and hit register), you can create channels and subchannels TEMPORARILY. That is, when they empty, they disappear. Useful for things that require a new channel real quick when I'm not on.
My computer now almost never goes down during normal hours, so feel free to join any time.
double post for information clarity:
I run a mostly 24/7 Mumble server. I run 1.2.3, so make sure when you go to the Mumble Sourceforge site (http://mumble.sourceforge.net/), make sure you get 1.2.3 and not anything else.
My server has channels and sub-channels for Left 4 Dead gaming, my Minecraft server, as well as Skulltag. Skulltag has sub-channels for Blue/Red teams, and Deathmatch.
To connect, just install and start Mumble 1.2.3 Client, and you'll be presented with a server list. Simply click the 'Add New' button at the bottom and fill out the information.
-The Label can be anything. It will show up in your favorites on the top of the list, so call it whatever you like.
-The address is Sorry but you are not allowed to view spoiler contents.
or if that doesn't work, PM me for the IP address.
-The port is the default one: 64738
-The username is...whatever you'd like to be your username.
You'll only need to put in the username once. After you join, go to the 'Self' menu (up top), and select register. This registers the server's certificate, your name, and information with you and the server, allowing you to join without having to put in a username each time.
Registering also allows you to create temporary rooms for the organization of another game, or an extra team.
Now, if it hasn't already, the Audio Wizard will come up and try to set your audio settings up. If it hasn't, select it from under the 'Configure' menu. It will help you get the input, output, and mic handling of your setup working. The best option is Push To Talk, though if you have a better mic and a quieter environment, VOX (voice operated transmission) or Voice Activity might be your best bet. I discourage the use of Continuous transmission for the fact of background noise, interruptions, and latency issues. The more people transmitting at one time, the more the server has to deal with, and the laggier it gets. Push to talk keeps your transmissions clear, concise, and small.
After that, just join a channel and start talking!
I have comments of information on each channel, though alot is common sense. However, the root has a comment with some rules.
1. Try not to swear.
2. Keep talk clean.
3. Don't join a room you're not playing in.
That last one is major, for me at least.
If you're not playing Minecraft, don't join Minecraft. If you're not playing Skulltag, don't join Skulltag. However, if you're thinking about and/or in the process of joining the Skulltag server, join to see what they're doing, but not for idle chat. Please.
I've also noticed that we sometimes have more than one ST server, so if that becomes a problem, just let me know, and I'll make 2 identical subchannels for each server.
Edit reason: 1.2.3 isn't RC anymore, its stable. Whoops...
