Post by: arch129 on November 02, 2009, 09:04:54 PM
Fan Projects Directory (http://www.chexquest.org/index.php?page=page133)

This is an example of what every project entry will look like in the directory.

Chex Quest: The Title of the Project
Platform: What Doom engine your project runs on.
Authors: Your name goes here!
Type: Single Player? Multiplayer?
Length: How many levels will your project have?
Status: Should normally be "Work In Progress"
Version: Phase 42 Alpha 5.whatever.
File Name: nameofthefile.wad
Required IWAD: What IWAD this project needs to run under.
Required WADs: Does your project need company to work correctly?
Download: Link to latest download.

There are four categories.

To be in Recently Updated you must (starting as of today 9/13/2011) update your project.  Your project can fall back into the WIP category if 6 months pass after the last update.

If your project has it's latest two downloads link rotted your project will not be on this list.  PLEASE use Chex Quest Backup (http://www.chexquest.org/index.php?topic=3370.0) to avoid this!

If you want to add your project to the list, or if you find a mistake, or want something changed/updated please comment here to inform me of your request.

Can anyone have theirs in the directory? Even the ones in the early development section? Or does it have to be recognized?

I'm working on a map that has A HUGE secret room, but it's very hard to find. It's probably going to be used in ANQ, but it's not gonna be total crap like the previous maps were. It's gonna be challenging, nicely detailed, and....yeah. That's it.

Wha? No! Nonono. With GZDoom you can use any color you want :3
Title: Re: The Fan Projects Directory Topic
Post by: Awesomedude249 on February 03, 2015, 10:45:06 PM
Really? Then if I port ANQ to GZDooM then I don't need the DooM palette file for GIMP. It's good to have, though.
Title: Re: The Fan Projects Directory Topic
Post by: 75 on February 03, 2015, 11:26:04 PM
Also one more question how many bits is chex quest 16 bit or 32 bit?

Everything using the doom software engine is EIGHT bit, 256 colors  (i.e the doom palette). It's literally incapable of showing any color except the ones in PLAYPAL. (there's 256 colors in the image below)

Note that this doesn't stop you from using true color pngs in zdoom, it will do its best to display them but if you use a lot of cyan it will look awful (compare the CL zorcher in Chex Pack in software and opengl mode to see what I mean).

However, gzdoom and zand's hardware renderer has true color, you can use any color you want.
Title: Re: The Fan Projects Directory Topic
Post by: Drwalrustein on February 04, 2015, 06:22:23 PM
Thanks I will be using any color. It is impressive that DooMs engine is 8 bit but look more 16 or 32 bit.
Title: Re: The Fan Projects Directory Topic
Post by: Awesomedude249 on February 04, 2015, 07:24:54 PM
Yeah, my mod is supposed to run on any platform, so I'm using a palette file to make sure I have the correct colors. It's very handy for DooM and Chex Quest spriting.
Title: Re: The Fan Projects Directory Topic
Post by: 75 on February 04, 2015, 09:22:56 PM
Thanks I will be using any color. It is impressive that DooMs engine is 8 bit but look more 16 or 32 bit.

Typically when people talk about "16 bit games" they're talking about the CPU bit width, not 16 bit color, game boy color (which was 8 bit) usually had far less than 255 colors shown on the screen at once if I recall correctly.

EDIT: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Game_Boy_Color (10, 32, or 56 colors)

8 bit CPUs severely limit how big your program can be, and how much memory the system could have (plus they were generally slower), that's why 8 bit systems like the NES had much simpler looking games than 16 bit games like the SNES.

games for 8 bit systems used far less than 8 bit color, I don't know of any games for 16 bit consoles that used 16 bit color, as far as I know that sort of thing didn't come out until around the N64 area? (fun fact: Doom 64 used true color)

EDIT2: I'm happy to talk about graphics stuff but IMO this is not really the place to do it

Back on topic with Drwalrustein's project: I have finished the first sprite and the death frames for the biomechanical commonus, took me about an hour to make all of them. I haven't made any rotation sprites or firing frames for it, I'll make those later. Here's a single sprite for it:
I thought the commonus looked really lame as a biomechanical creature with no arms, I made them.
Here's what the death animation should look like:

Yep, very short. I'm gonna get to work now on firing frames and the like. Walrus, I'll PM you the sprites when done.

I am back now after a dead project and some shenanigans here is my new project.

Chex Quest: Dw's map pack

Platform: Zandronum
Authors: Drwalrustein
Type: Single player
Status: Work in progress
Filename: DWMP
Length:10 maps
Description: A map pack made by yours truly Drwalrustein.

When you start type map map01
Version: Alpha 0.1.1

Edit: The reason why I changed it to Zandronum since GZDooM when I tested it was not really compatible with it.

Title: Re: The Fan Projects Directory Topic
Post by: Awesomedude249 on June 24, 2015, 06:46:05 PM
No, I can't help.
Also, I found some little flaws in your mod.
I'm pointing these out to help make it better, this is actually pretty good, and you get some passes since it's your first map.
Let's critique.
1:
This texture right here:
I checked, and this isn't any kind of secret wall, it's just a grass wall. That's a little off.

2:
The level was pretty short. You went into a room, another room, and got the key. Repeat twice, and the level's done. I mean, it's well done, but you should make it longer. Normally what people would expect from an alpha is a level that's a little bit longer.

3:
There was a maximus on the first level. Now, it's possible to lure him out of the room and then sneak over to the lock to win the level, but it's kinda tricky to do.

Only three major bad things about the map, and it's your first map, overall it was good for a starter.
Title: Re: The Fan Projects Directory Topic
Post by: Drwalrustein on June 24, 2015, 08:01:38 PM
I did a patch also when I put secret on linedefs it doesn't say secret when I walk over it or show it on the map.
Also a free secret: In the first room look behind you and you see a slimey wall walk into it and you find the zorch prepulsor.
Title: Re: The Fan Projects Directory Topic
Post by: noob1234 on June 29, 2015, 04:36:30 PM
Not bad! I wouldn't say it was too easy or too hard, and for the first map in the WAD it didn't HAVE to be bigger IMO. But I think you had a couple texturing issues; in the zorch propulsor secret the slime textures don't tile properly since the walls are too narrow. In the room where you get the red key, the texturing looks a little awkward to me... Especially on the ceiling. I guess you need better detailing in general on the level. Good work so far though!
Oh, also Zandronum said it couldn't find the music "BJORN_L" for the level.
Title: Re: The Fan Projects Directory Topic
Post by: Drwalrustein on June 29, 2015, 05:55:11 PM
The BJorn_L was a midi file that never worked. I will release a new version with a working midi file.

It's up to Arch I suppose, but I'd recommend waiting until you have more done before asking for a project forum.

Also, this really shouldn't be an IWAD, what if somebody wanted to load it as a HD textures pwad? Why bloat the file size by copying every single (unmodified) sprite?

It's up to Arch I suppose, but I'd recommend waiting until you have more done before asking for a project forum.

Didn't I say this:

attempts to replace everything with hi-quality textures.

He means for the alpha release. And I agree, if you have an alpha with ONLY the status bar changed, it's gonna be too bloated.

[Assuming you mean you aim to only replace patches and graphics, "Textures" means graphics you put on walls in the Doom engine, not sure if you know that] Yes, but you're not replacing the sprites, maps, sounds, or music, why make us download them again when you could just make a PWAD out of your high res textures like this Doom HD Textures Project? http://zandronum.com/forum/showthread.php?tid=6215&highlight=textures

IIRC there used to be a rule that said that you need to have a significant amount of progress toward your project before you would be able to get a project board, but I can't find the topic anymore, maybe they got rid of that rule?

I like the high res doom textures.

This is not as bloated as the original Chex Quest IWAD. Chex Quest actually has the other few Ultimate Doom levels.

You have to have an Admin create the sub-forum for you, and they will most likely deny you unless there's good progress.

I beg to differ.

Actually, the chex.wad in the compact zip currently available does... I don't know why though.

It's simple: when the developers made CQ, they forgot to delete the DooM leftovers. That's why the other DooM levels are in there.

I actually went to E2M7 and the cyberdemon was invisible and it was hilarious.

Ok, a few things.

1. 75 and ChexMaster are correct. I'm gonna want to see some actual progress on a project before giving a subforum. Especially when newer and younger members are involved. Projects from those two groups tend to end up abandoned more often than not.

2. The real Chex.wad does NOT have any DooM leftovers in it AFAIK. However, On the CD there was another version of Chex.wad, which was a complete Ultimate DooM IWAD with All the DooM graphics removed and the relevant Chex Quest graphics added in. According to a readme file on the CD, this was for Mac users to load into their own copy of DooM so they could play, as Chex.exe was DOS/Windows only. They left the levels in, as DooM would have thrown a fit if it didn't have all the levels present. Why they didn't replace them with dummy levels, I don't know. However, the fact remains that this was an officially licensed giveaway distribution, as far as we are aware. Since the levels are nearly impossible to play without DooM graphics, I don't think it is too much of an issue.

Then why have PFUB1, PFUB2, ENDPIC, and END* not been replaced?

Maybe because they did not need to use it.

Wait a minute. Maybe he's using the WAREZ scifience version where all they did was merge doomu.wad and chex.wad. WVL, did you download your chex.wad from a site called Tucows?

No, I downloaded it from http://www.myabandonware.com/game/chex-quest-2e4 (http://www.myabandonware.com/game/chex-quest-2e4)
EDIT: And no, I did not download DOOM or DOOM II from there

The abadonware version is inferior to the chex3 version you can find in the forum's download pages.

chex3.wad is not chex.wad.

That being said, that Abandonware version does look rather fishy.

It is better to get the real chex.wad instead of abadonware since they may contain viruses.

I can confirm that the official version of chex.wad that ships with the original CD contains the Doom versions of these images. I am not sure why they didn't replace it with a static black background or something similar, perhaps they left them in as placeholders and forgot since they never show up in game? Technically I'm pretty sure that's copyright infringement for Digital Cafe to have that in there (along with the iwad maps for e2, e3 and e4), but I'm not sure what the agreement with iD was and they didn't get in trouble for it; iD probably didn't know.

Good thing that Chukker figured that out in CQ3, but still.
