Title: Graphics
Post by: 75 on August 08, 2010, 03:47:18 AM
I'm going to post the custom graphics in this wad here

Feel free to use in your own wad, just give me credit

you probably know my jump boots by now

and my chexter getting zorched sprites

And, brand new as of 3 AM this morning...

Flem micro missiles!

the chex version of the cyberdemon doesn't need to fire zorch propulsor shots anymore!

Add this sound effect

http://www.mediafire.com/?1s3dqgdfehmc8hw

and this for the explosion

http://www.mediafire.com/?34aa4pp4wf9b4e5

(Sound effects found in Chex Quest: The Lost Quest)

and you're in business.

EDIT - better versions

MINIA8A2 looks a bit funny, but other than that, I'm satisfied with the set

now for the explosions...

It definitely looks good, but the explosion doesn't seem big enough, considering the damage these things do.

Flemoid Laz device... why do my explosion sprites turn out so small?

My reasoning behind a flemoid version of the laz device is that the flemoids don't want to kill chexter, they just want to stop him (i.e., by sliming him or sending him somewhere).

Right now, I'm working on the actor who will fire these things

yeah, I was thinking of that. I might try to build off of them, at very least I'll reprogram their behavior and use them as placeholders, since I want to get this map going

Spam can (Rage replacement) - thanks for the idea Quadrumpusguy!

although all I did was rip it out of google images, it's a good rip, so I might as well include it.

Maybe I'll split it between the two, every other time it'll play the spam cannon one

Anyway, new zorcher, the chain lightning zorcher. It fires three shots in three round bursts, which bounce off walls.

This last one looks unfinished, but it's not, the missing parts get covered up by its bright frames

These are bright frames, they'll glow in the dark

And a large case of its ammo

Right now, I can't get the code to work for it, so I haven't tested it. If the sprites need tweaking, I'll let you know.

No projectile sprites yet. I'm getting to that.

EDIT -

I looked at the sprites and noticed wierd gray lines... It turns out that that was very subtle transparency. There's still one line in the B frame, I'll fix that later

They still have transparency/translucency problems. I'm working on it.

I am good at decorate coding! Just ask.

Bye the way, you are gonna create sprites for the flags and whatnot in capture the flag, right?
Title: Re: Graphics

The flag sprites are already done, they were included in cqarena, and they look great

Will the bolts of chain lightning leave a trail?
Title: Re: Graphics
Post by: 75 on August 14, 2010, 01:42:07 PM
A short one, yeah. They're going to look more like lightning bolts, kind of arrow shaped.

EDIT - I changed my mind on the MAP03 boss, I just can't make the quadrumpus look like a boss, so I'm going to try to do something completely different

I'll make a new release in a bit. In the meantime, just use the flag actors without sprites

I know it would be a lot of work, but if each member got a skin made for them, that would be epic. For example, mine would be Chexter with an LAZ Device, and so on.

That's what I was thinking, if I have time. After at least three invasion maps are done, three deathmatch maps, and maybe a couple CTF / Skull Tag maps, I'll start thinking about skins.

That idea is awesome - Personalized skins for CQFF members.

Only way to get skins though is by creating classes (I think) I was looking in Chex Quest 3's Decorate and saw stuff for Chex Warrior but it had // before everything so it may have been comments.
Title: Re: Graphics
Post by: 75 on August 19, 2010, 09:19:34 PM
the //s in the chex warrior class are probably there because the class is defined in zdoom/skulltag.pk3

he's got the exact same properties as shown in DECORATE in chex3.wad, for whatever reason, the definition in DECORATE is just a placeholder.
Title: Re: Graphics
Post by: QuadrumpusGuy on August 19, 2010, 09:24:42 PM
I thought so. I wonder if there is a way to get rid of classes and go into a skin system like Doom 2.
Title: Re: Graphics
Post by: 75 on August 19, 2010, 09:28:29 PM
We don't need to get rid of classes, there are plenty of games that have classes AND skins, it's just a matter of figuring out how to make it work. I'm sure if there is something in chex3 that messes up skins, we'll be able to get rid of it.
Title: Re: Graphics

I've been working on the fingers of my zorch glove, I'm pretty happy with it, I still have to add the lightning effects on the fingers so it doesn't look like it has rubies in it (Chexen, anyone?)

The palm part of the hand is just stock doom hand stuff

Better version

It has brightmaps too, which look... ok. I'm still working on that

An early version of ZGLOD0 (no zorch detail, basic shading)

Since I'm going to bed, I thought I'd post what I last did.
Title: Re: Graphics
Post by: 75 on August 23, 2010, 01:27:37 PM
a bit of bad perspective on the glove, it looks like he only has three fingers and two joints. I'm going to keep trying till I get it right

I see why it's off

In the perspective that I drew it, the index finger should be in front of the... (whatever that next finger is called) finger, which is in front of the ring finger...

You can't see the pinky because it's blocked from view by the ring finger, because you're looking at the hand partially from the side.

I might use the palms parallel to the ground position for the decoy glove, when I get to it.

Title: Re: Graphics

I was trying to modify this patch, to make it repeat better...

I took the steel border off and used the smudge tool to get the shadows out of it.

But, well, you know what the smudge tool does... I tried to keep it in moderation, starting by just smudging the shadowy parts out of existence, but then it made the part next to it look funny... I better fix that too...

about a minute later, it came out like this

I saw that and thought "there's no way that's going to look good in game"

I named it "messy.png", and loaded it into the wad, just to see what it looks like, and... it looks great! That's going to be the hull of my frigate.
Title: Re: Graphics
Post by: MajorSlime on August 26, 2010, 01:38:01 PM
dude, you can make the repeat very well WITH the border, if you just get rid of the shadows, and play around with the offsets in editor.

hmmm

when that happens in mine, I just leave a replacement and come back to it later, so I don't lose my ideas for the rest of the level.

but then again, mine end up being rough drafts of the entire level instead of completed versions of parts of the level.  :-\

that's not a bad way to work, better to have a rough draft of the whole level than only having 50 feet of extreme detail.

However... I didn't want to release MAP03 with lame boss replacements.
Title: Re: Graphics

and now, I present to you, my Act 1 boss concept for MAP03

It's kind of ugly at the moment, still working on it. Getting his chest right is proving to be really difficult.

It's less ugly if you zoom it in about 5 times, so you can see the detail on his hat and his scoder (scowder?), but still, it needs a bit of work before I start working on rotations, firing states, pain states, death states, and walking states.

Sounds like a lot, but once I get a good picture of what he's going to look like, it will actually go really quickly. If you have a good first sprite, the rest is pretty easy.

EDIT - better version

the right arm only looks funny when it's small.

and, even better yet. He's a different breed of flemoid, so his slime has a bit of a pattern to it

A screenshot of him next to the maximus, I sized him up a bit because he was way too small
(http://i446.photobucket.com/albums/qq189/Jwaffe/Screenshot_Chex_20100827_010713.png)
I really need to do something about his nose... it messes up his whole expression

I tried taking the nose off completely, but that makes his face look really weird... makes him look like a worm or something... gross.

I'm going to wait for some feedback on this before I start doing rotations.

the quick resize made him too blurry, so I think I'm going to keep the mini version, actually. See for yourself

I'm working on the zorch gloves in the meantime. I'm going to scrap the ABC states and instead start it in the D state. I'll post an example in a bit. tomorrow

ok, now I'm going to bed. Goodnight

Title: Re: Graphics

o_0

well, lets see...

i'd say it looks pretty good except for the chest and face. The chest definately needs more shading. And the face could use some more shade variation too (more like the bottom). The eyes look pretty good, but just not quite right. Is that supposed to be some sort of techno aiming thing on his right eye? And whats with the hat?
Title: Re: Graphics
Post by: 75 on August 27, 2010, 03:19:03 PM
Here's a newer version

The face looks funny probably because of the nose

yeah, that's supposed to be an aiming device. And that's his left eye, by the way.

As for the hat... I thought he looked funny bald  XD

Also, since he's an officer, I figured he should have something to differentiate him from the rest of the troops. If you think it looks too funny, I'll get rid of it, I could live without it.
Title: Re: Graphics
Post by: MajorSlime on August 27, 2010, 03:50:07 PM
looks great.

hat just looks funny cause of that bright blue stripe. maybe green?
and don't forget to shade the chest (like so that one area isn't all one shade [it looks too cartoony])
also, I would make those lines on the bottom and arm a little lighter. they stand out too much
Title: Re: Graphics
Post by: 75 on August 27, 2010, 04:19:50 PM
That one area looks like it's all one shade...

what part of his chest?

it looks a bit better in game (actual size)
and an even better version

Title: Re: Graphics
Post by: MajorSlime on August 27, 2010, 05:31:00 PM
All of it. Do you see how on the maximus' nose, they have a little darker shade that they mix in with the normal shade? Thats what i'm saying you should do.
Title: Re: Graphics
Post by: ChexCommander on August 27, 2010, 09:34:52 PM
Yeah, the nose on your flemoid is almost all one solid color straight down the middle. Shade around a little.

I asked for some tips from some guy on another forum, he seems really good

Title: Re: Graphics

what do you mean, CM?

Do you know of a good boss already made?

Or, are you saying you can draw? I could tell you what I have in mind, and you could handle the monsters while I get better at drawing

I'm ok with weapons, but I need more practice before I can make convincing monsters.
Title: Re: Graphics

I mean, that, after making alot of new monsters and weapons and whatnot for chexquest reflections, I have some experience with monster graphics. You said that the other frames and rotations besides the first is fairly easy, right? Well, I could make a pretty could first frame of that boss (or anything else) for you to work off of.

So...

your assuming that needs no words to explain.

I'm assuming that will be in your mod.

IT BETTER BE

it already is  8)

fully functioning, useful, non-cheap (secret) weapon that you can pick up in a certain place in LMS01.

It's also going to be included in the random powerup thingy, except you get to keep this weapon for good. It has infinite ammo, and fires very weak rapid fire shotgun blasts.

It's pretty effective in deathmatch. In invasion you might want to save it for when all of your other weapons run out of ammo.

I didn't just stick it in from the wad given here http://forum.zdoom.org/viewtopic.php?f=19&t=16178&start=0 I fixed it up a bit

My fixes to the original weapon:

- Applied anti-aliasing to the sprite because it looked kind of bad
- Changed the attack from A_CustomMissile to A_Firebullets
- Cranked up the volume on the rickroll sound (it blasts now)

and I added the chexman hands (duh) and modified the boombox sprite a bit to make it look good with chexter's hands

Perhaps different songs have different attack types? By the way, what song are you using for the boombox?

Rick Astley, although I could use a couple different songs depending on the level.

These all look great so far! can't wait to play with it ingame! :whale

Something that looks weird to me is the thumb on the sprite for the ZorchGlove's right hand. it looks to me that it's placed a little too far to the left or something. :-\ idk it may just be me.

Other than that: aaaawesoooome

I'm going to have it start in this frame too (there's going to be a mirror image for his right hand)

you're missing a rotation, and the front/back view just looks like a splat

The side view looks ok, but I can't tell if it's supposed to be a helix or just a 2d Z-shaped sort of thing

i've got the rotation, i just didn't post it

they're all animated, so the front will look fizzling, and the sides will move back and forth

its not a helix

Title: Re: Graphics
Post by: 75 on September 01, 2010, 08:25:01 PM
The blue propulsor is the freezing zorcher, and the green rapid zorcher is the caustic zorcher. I didn't make those sprites, QG did.

The freezing zorcher looks ok, the caustic zorcher could probably use new graphics. Maybe something like the infector from ratchet and clank

although... I have almost no clue why a caustic zorcher is necessary. There's no caustic damagetype defined in the player class, he reacts like he was being shot by any other zorcher.

maybe I'll get rid of it. With my new zorcher on slot 4, there's going to be plenty of rapid projectile zorchers to choose from.

yeah, sorry quad. I'll swap the caustic zorcher spawns with the chain lightning zorcher.

The freezing zorcher... I'd have to think about it. I'm seeing a sort of small bazooka like weapon, except with a glass barrel.

Title: Re: Graphics
Post by: 75 on September 02, 2010, 12:45:00 AM
yeah, they're really nice. I'm not sure who did them, though, maybe it was Manny.

anyway, I'm going to use a new status bar in this game. I have to, since the old one has serious problems in Skulltag

So, it's going to get some new graphics

and "weapon" will have a picture of the weapon selected on top of it.

The "Q" logo will be replaced with the inventory when an item is added to the inventory (in case mappers want to have inventory items).

I wonder how hard it would be to have someting on top of the inventory that lists all the selectable items in there, that would be awesome

I modified this from Strife's Status bar. I asked him for permission to use it. If he says no, I'll just mess with the normal chex status bar
Title: Re: Graphics
Post by: MajorSlime on September 02, 2010, 02:35:59 AM
If you use that one, make the weapons kind of high tech looking, like outlined sorta. Have you ever played Halo 3? Make 'em kind of like the weapons at the top right (the ones that signify you have those, by the ammo), except not quite as filled in. That would be awesome.

It might be possible to show all available inventory items with acs or something.

On another note: do you mind if I mess with the boombox graphics a little? Like make it animated while playing? (Booming speaker, etc.)
Title: Re: Graphics
Post by: 75 on September 02, 2010, 04:23:31 AM
go for it, I was thinking of doing that myself, but I got lazy

Give it your best shot, if it looks better, I'll put it in  :)

I think I know what you mean about the weapons, although I've never played Halo 3. I was thinking Blake Stone: Aliens of Gold when I put it in.

I tested the new status bar out

compared to the old one
(http://i446.photobucket.com/albums/qq189/Jwaffe/Screenshot_Chex_20100902_115520.png)
I don't like either of them, but then again I always play with the fullscreen hud. Is the new one too dark?

I used Arch's numbers - I'll give him credit

The new ones fine. I love it. But a couple things:

1. The W in weapon is kinda blurred. Anyway you can fix that?
2. I say make your own, high tech numbers. Something blue maybe.
3. Is it possible to get rid of the green background behind the chex guy?

Quote2. I say make your own, high tech numbers. Something blue maybe.

Blue? Nah... I kind of like these yellow digits. If you've got a better idea, feel free to show me though

Quote3. Is it possible to get rid of the green background behind the chex guy?

I don't know, but I'm working on it. It's a skulltag thing, it's automatically applied when a multiplayer game is started.

I wonder if it's possible to assign mugshots based on damgetype...

although that wouldn't make any sense, chexter could feasibly be "hurt" by slime and zorch at the same time, and there's no real way to show both

maybe I'll just stick with him being slimed in the mugshot. I like the mugshot, I don't want to get rid of it. It doesn't make sense with the two damagetypes, but I can live with that

EDIT - I fixed the W.

I like the yellow lettering, it makes it look more chexy

Blue is specified as the color to be recolored in the ChexPlayer75 class. I could make it any color I wanted... blue, pink. yellow, etc.

Don't worry about it, I'm going to redesign the FO zorcher, it's going to launch a big, heavy orb that blows up on contact with the ground in a huge icy explosion

it'll be easier to control than the frozen orb, and a lot more powerful

I haven't worked on the fire bomb-like zorcher recently

I know this would be a lot of work, but it could be more fun to do multiplayer if we had more than just Chexter, eg. the Kix guy, the cheerios guy, etc.

Also, I was thinking, instead of using Chex pieces for everything (although, yes, this is Chex Quest), a Crispix (octagon or something) piece could be interesting for something.

We need something for the "You Fail It!" medal. I was reminded of it when I got one curing CTF tonight. xD

This might be too CQFF-specific, but I was thinking something like a box for Whsleware or Sharkware, or something.

I was thinking, maybe we should replace the Llama medal with Whaleware... it wouldn't be quite as good until we get a new announcer, but it'd be just as random... (btw, what does get you the llama? So far I've gotten it by dominating bots with railzorcher sniping...)

Microsoft sam would make good announcer.   XD
:lolwut

I noticed some of the medals appear off center, like the the Railgun one (Proficiency? I don't remember).

Do you think it would be possible to make something like the Alternative HUD in GZDoom and ZDoom? I always loved that HUD.
Title: Re: Graphics
Post by: 75 on September 25, 2010, 05:44:45 PM
An alternative hud would be awesome! Although it might take up too much room... there's lots of different ammo types.

I'm not sure how to do Alt huds in SBARINFO. I'm pretty sure there's a way, though.

As for medals being off center, if you notice that happening, post about it, and I'll make a list and try to figure out what's going on.

Oh no! Somebody burned his oven mitt! Maybe the zorcher is really warm, so he has to carry it around like that. Real tough guy, I tell ya

hmmm... why can't I stop drawing oven mitts and boxing gloves? I think I know what the melee attack will be, though! XD

but, what does it replace (or is it all new)?
Is it melee or ranged attacks?
Title: Re: Graphics
Post by: 75 on October 26, 2010, 07:41:08 PM
it's a new one. It's going to have ranged attacks, but there's going to be more forms than this one.

It's probably going to be something like the mancubus. Its attacks will move very fast (I might slow down the quadrumpus' slime balls) and the slime will be powerful.

Another form will fire flem micro missiles and a ground hugging attack similar to the bruiser demon or QG's emperor ceruleus.

It was crucial to recolor part of the sprite because there was literally no good color range for it; now the middle part recolors.

Also, I added some generic zorch pain sprites that can be copy/pasted onto any skin to add that zorch effect, and some clean radsuit skin pain sprites.

Nice Job!

I wish I knew how you do the magic that is the zorch effect...
Title: Re: Graphics
Post by: 75 on February 15, 2012, 09:55:58 PM
It's actually quite easy

Start out by drawing some slightly dark colored pink, then draw some white lines for the sort of "lightning" it has, lighten up the pink background near the white lightning to make it look realistic. After you do this, draw a red outline around the entire pink area.

Something to consider - do not make the lightning curved, and be sure that both the red outline and the white lightning is always only one pixel thick. The more you branch the lightning, the better it looks.

Also, remember to make the zorch effect visible from all angles, you will need to be creative, even put it on the feet of the actor if you need to.

You need to use more than one shade of pink, use a brighter shade near the lightning, then steadily darken it away from the lightning.

Title: Re: Graphics
Post by: 75 on February 16, 2012, 09:46:09 PM
Good idea, but the number of jumps involved in that is too cumbersome for my project. Perhaps a morph?

I'd rather just keep it a skin, it is not very significant if the other player has a radsuit on in multiplayer.
Title: Re: Graphics
Post by: MajorSlime on February 16, 2012, 10:57:57 PM
Hmm... good point. If I have the time though, and get it to work with something like a morph, would you put it in?

Oh, and Nomekop, dont put the red outline all the way around the zorch areas. Notice how in 75's its only around the outside facing area?
Title: Re: Graphics
Post by: 75 on February 16, 2012, 11:24:22 PM
It depends on how complicated it is, I want to keep the player simple so it's easy to re-use and hard to break.

Hmm... I still see some red areas that need to be cleaned up. And, just something I noticed, your flemoid is kinda small, and the large amounts of zorch doesn't quite look good. Maybe make the zorch areas really small? (or at least, a lot smaller)
Title: Re: Graphics
Post by: 75 on February 17, 2012, 08:40:56 PM
Zorch looks best if it's on the outer edge of whatever the sprite is, it looks especially good on arms, hands, legs...

If you put it in the middle of a limb it is hard to make it look good. Zorch definitely needs room to radiate out (I say radiate but it looks more like an oozing effect) from the point of zorch contact.

Also, for zorch death states, ALWAYS start from the exterior and move in, unless you want to make some sort of gib sprite where part of the flemoids' parts zorch away before the others... I don't recommend that.

Title: Re: Graphics

I notice that the slime ball in the center looks 2-D, but the rest looks 3-D, try making it seem more like these two parts are attached, and give more shading on the ball. I'm not good at shading spheres, though, so I can't tell you how to do it.

Also, the metal shading on the legs and arms isn't good. Metal should be shinier, and have reflections. Unfortunately, I don't know how to shade metal, so I can't tell you how to improve it.

Hallo.

There's a alpha set of panels i'm creating attached to this post. Wanna look at em, 75?

I ripped the lever from the force field switches I found in your latest alpha. I then used the base panel look from it to create the rest. These are all patches, not textures, and are meant to be put together to create textures. I'm hoping to make a fairly decent sized pack :D Also, you may want to use the same patch approach to the force field switches I found. There's a lot of them, and patches' take up less space.

Examples of these put into textures can be found next time we test my Extreme Survival map :D
