There was some down time, all of the servers are back up now. Tell me if you notice incorrect DMFlags or settings.

Now hosting Ultimate E1 Doom Deathmatch

<[IFOC] Server> Ultimate Doom E1 Deathmatch

I modified the duel server to only have E1 maps

I recommend playing Ultimate Doom E1 duel or Deathmatch, the maps are very well made.

EDIT - copy/pasted the first post of my skulltag server hosting topic, it's not as relevant here, since most people who visit this page wouldn't troll about chex quest, but it's worth mentioning for the sake of random viewers.

I fixed a typo "Cybercrime + Shooting Monsters whit with guns" in one of the server titles

Thanks to ViciousPariah for telling me about the error.

I added two new servers, zBlood survival and Worms doom.

Worms doom is buggy, but fun.

EDIT - you will need skulltag 98E r3299 to play Worms Doom

I hosted these servers by sending serial data to and from the internet, using UDP, over a various set of ports. The serial data is encoded and compressed using the Huffman algorithm, and decoded when it reaches your computer.

I was watching my computer's performance monitor tonight, and I know why players experience random lag spikes.

It's NOT my ISP, my router, or even my network, it's my computer's CPU. I don't understand how this is happening, it seems to just happen at random. I don't know why Skulltag would suddenly take up an enormous amount of CPU resources, I've seen the servers sit with 5 players with no problem, then the CPU goes to 100% and lags everyone out.

After I graduate and move out (after December) I want to set up a dedicated server rig, with a ubuntu/linux server OS. I read an article that said that having a powerful CPU isn't important, I don't believe it after seeing my dual core from 2008 get overworked.

Title: Re: [IFOC] Server Hosting
Post by: 75 on September 11, 2011, 11:49:29 AM
NOTE: Right now the servers are up, this is a notification of future downtime.

I ordered a new, better router today and I'm also going to switch my server computer from Windows 7 to FreeBSD. It's not a hardware upgrade (yet), but switching to a more predictable OS should help these lag spikes.

The router should arrive in three days, the servers will stay up 24/7 until it arrives.

After I get it there will be some down time to configure it, I guess that it won't take more than a half hour.

Then, when I have time, I will add a FreeBSD partition to my current computer, it's possible that this task will take an entire day, or more if I have problems.

I'll post updates here when I am ready to install FreeBSD, and time estimates for when you can expect the servers to be back up.
Title: Re: [IFOC] Server Hosting
Post by: 75 on September 14, 2011, 10:46:02 PM
The router is installed and working.

A few users on Skulltag said that they can connect to my servers, but I can't see them on doomseeker or connect to them.

I know it's not my configuration, I tested this configuration file and it worked great on the other router, albeit on a different computer.

EDIT - I tried it on the same computer, on the same OS, with the same configuration, I can't see my servers even in that situation, I either made a mistake in the configuration, or the router is broken.

Put 127.0.0.1 as a custom server?

Are you asking me to do that? Is that a server you're hosting?

If you're asking if you need to do that to play on my servers, you don't, they are broadcast to the master server, thus you can see them in Doomseeker without adding any custom servers.

EDIT - I'm getting no response from 127.0.0.1:10666

127.0.0.1 is YOUR computer. YOUR OWN. You want to know why you aren't getting a response? You're asking for one from your own computer.

You put 127.0.0.1 as a custom server usually to be able to see your own hosted servers on the computer they're on.
Title: Re: [IFOC] Server Hosting - Online!
Post by: 75 on September 18, 2011, 09:00:57 PM
That's not my external ip, nor is it my server computer's ip.

And putting my server computer as a custom server does work, it's the only way I can see my servers since my router doesn't allow me to see my own servers through the internet.

If you make that vague of a reply, you shouldn't be surprised if I guess wrong in trying to understand what you are trying to tell me.

EDIT - Just learned today in a networking class that 127.0.0.1 is a reserved address that is the loopback address for the computer you're currently running; I assumed you were doing something like foo.bar.a.x, and 127.0.0.1 meant "fill in the server computer's ip here"

That would have worked if I was trying to check my servers from the host computer, but I only use that computer to host servers.

I assembled the new server computer, but it doesn't start. I didn't have a lot of time to diagnose the problem tonight, by Thursday at the latest I should know if it's a wiring problem or a bad power supply.
Title: Re: [IFOC] Server Hosting - Online!
Post by: 75 on September 20, 2011, 06:47:29 PM
It's started, FreeBSD is installed, but the ethernet connection isn't working, my guess is I need drivers since "ping 127.0.0.1" works but "ping <server computer ip>" doesn't.

But, first, I need to learn how to use FreeBSD because right now I don't even know how to mount a flash drive to access it. My other computer will run the servers until this computer is ready.

Moved the servers over to Zandronum, though their master server isn't working, so you won't see them yet. Oddly I can see them on IDE but it thinks they are Skulltag servers.

If you want to play, open up IDE, find my server, and look at the address/port, then type -connect "ip address here":"port" making sure that you have the right IWADs and PWADs selected and no map in the warp box, and that you are using zandronum as the executable

example: -connect 69.14.191.20:10666

(10666-10668 are Chex ST Pack servers, load ChexSTPackP16.pk3 and select Chex3.wad as the IWAD)

You can also launch the game with Chex ST Pack as a pwad with zandronum and then typing connect 69.14.191.20:10666

The master server is online, and my servers are visible.

If you experience lag on the servers report it here, it's possible I need to upgrade my server's connection.

The servers are now all visibile, and hosted on Zandronum, though there has been problems.

I plan on switching back to Skulltag this weekend. Unfortunately this Zandronum build is too unstable to play some mods on. I'll wait for a more stable version to host 24/7.

I never see anyone on the chex servers. I do have Ultimate Doom and Doom 2 as I got Doom 3 BFG edition recently. I would like to see the brutal doom and stupid lms mods used in a server or 2 with doom 2 or ult doom, as they are fun mods that kick a**.

Another server you could add is a Megaman 8 bit deathmatch server, as that is a completely free game using the doom 2 engine and would go in nicely for those who like megaman

Seriously, if you are reading this now and have zandronum, why are you still here? Get on and start fragging people!
Title: Re: [IFOC] Server Hosting - Online!
Post by: 75 on November 30, 2013, 07:38:34 PM
I haven't really played much brutal doom, but I didn't really like what I saw; seems like it would be too distracting.

Also, I try not to host weapon mods to try to keep a pure doom experience. SMWG I can tolerate since it adds dual wielding which is neat, though even in that case I also offer UAC ultra without weapon mods for those that prefer it.

If Parkour worked in zandronum I'd host that, but unfortunately that's a little ways off. (~zdoom 2.6)

I haven't tried Stupid LMS, don't know much about it. When I get time I'll try it.

MM8BDM is fun but there's already a ton of servers for it, if there's a specific game mode you'd like that you can't find or something, let me know.

The Ultimate Needs More Detail Survival server has been removed due to a serious multiplayer issue in E2M8, it's possible for a player to ride the elevator up, then die, then nobody else will be able to get up there after that.

While this is easily fixable it makes me think I need to go through this wad again to make sure there's no other stuff like this I missed (that might take a while)  :facepalm

I'm not sure how I missed that before.

1. Run Doomseeker, and wait a few seconds while the list populates

2. To filter so that it shows only my servers, type "IFOC" in the server filter, you'll see a list of servers that I'm hosting.

Sorry, but is that really relevant? Nobody playing isn't a problem, it just means that nobody is on the server right now. If you bump a topic, it should be to add something to the post at hand, not to state a minor thing that isn't that important.

Thanks Awesomedude but please give me a chance to respond to stuff like this.

Most of us are pretty busy these days it seems. If you get on IRC you might be able to find somebody to play with, depending on the time of day, weekends are your best bet.

You can PM me if I'm on (usually weekends), when I'm ready to take a break I'll join up and play a few rounds. There might be some other guys (or gals) in #IFOC that would be interested in playing, too.

EDIT: Also please don't hesitate to bump this topic if you have something to say about the server cluster. IMO this topic should be exempt from the bumping rule to avoid one off topics like "I can't connect" or "I want to request a wad to be hosted". This sort of thing is pretty common, there's several topics like this on the Zandronum forums.
Title: Re: [IFOC] Server Hosting - Online!

Servers have been upgraded to Zandronum 3.0 a while back (I couldn't log in for a while so this reply is a bit late). For those of you following Zandronum, note that this means that Zandronum is now compatible with up to ZDoom 2.8pre-441-g458e1b1 / GZDoom 1.8.6, which adds tons of features (Zand 2.0 was only compatible with zdoom 2.5.0).

See this Zandronum forums topic for more information on the release: https://zandronum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=8500

There were some compatibility problems with Chex Pack -- something to do with thing bridges, also the Large Zorcher sound disappeared and some things got moved out of the zandronum engine and into skulltag_actors.pk3.

So there's a new version of Chex Pack to go with this release, as far as I know this didn't effect any of the other servers except MSPaintDoom, which has been (partially) fixed.

I played a few levels on every server and it seemed to be fine, but don't hesitate to reply to this topic with any issues you find.

Title: Re: [IFOC] Server Hosting - Temporarily offline
Post by: 75 on May 21, 2018, 06:43:23 PM
The servers are I think configured correctly, at this point I just have to go through and test the servers. It's a lot for me to go through on my own, would anyone be interested in helping out with testing server configs?

To test all you need to do is help play through the servers and look for things like whether you can break maps with the flags (e.g., being able to jump in a map that you shouldn't or the reverse, or stuff like being able to exit in DM maps (which would be bad)) and making sure that the maplist in each server is beatable.

Note that I host things other than Chex, ideally it would be nice if testers had plutonia, TNT, ultimate doom, and Doom 2 as well as the Chex wads. Worst case scenario I can run through these maps myself, though.

Please post here if you are interested, hopefully we can find some span of time that works for everyone (maybe we can knock this out some weekend -- not this weekend). The servers aren't up 24/7 right now, but I'll put them up just for testing when we find a good day to do it.
