Title: WAD Editing Tutorial #2: Mapping
Post by: WindowsVistaLover5570 on September 01, 2015, 08:10:57 PM
If you want to create an IWAD, you need to know mapping. If you haven't already downloaded SLADE, do it now. Here is a link to SLADE 3.1.0.3: http://slade.mancubus.net/files/Setup_SLADE_3103.exe. Now,
let's get to mapping. The reason I tell you to download SLADE is because you can use it for all WAD editing, while Doom Builder is for mapping only. This tutorial you can use Doom Builder or SLADE for, though. Open SLADE and then click "Create New Map". For the game choose Chex Quest and for the port choose ZDoom. For the base resource choose chex.wad (you may have to browse for it) and click OK. Leave everything as default (unless this is not E1M1 for example E2M1, E1M2, so on) and click OK. Then, you can design your map. You should create an outline of your level first, and then go into Things mode. Right-click and then click "Create New Thing". This is what you do to create a thing that is not a player start: Right click and click "Create new thing" and right-click the thing and click "Change type" Choose whatever type you want. Then click "Ok". This is my mapping tutorial.

Please stop making these tutorials. They are short and not very informative if you know nothing about mapping.

I started editing WADs knowing nothing about editing them. I didn't read tutorials. I just taught myself.

Yes, but for the other people who don't want to figure it out, they will go to this tutorial and not understand a thing because there were very little details.

Honestly, if you want to learn how to edit WADs, go to the ZDoom wiki. http://zdoom.org/wiki/

It'll have everything you'll need.

If you want to create an IWAD...

In almost all cases, you don't create IWADs (Internal Wads), you make PWADs (Patch wads).

Here's some other mapping tutorials:

Also, there's some videos by Chubzdoomer on youtube that might help, too

Actually I put that in there if they wanted to create an IWAD and not a PWAD.

Keep in mind IWADs will only be recognized by zDoom engines if you get permission from the engine devs, you should really only make a new IWAD if you plan on replacing everything, and even then there have been total conversion wads that replaced everything that ran just fine as PWADs
