The gray is rather bland, to me. I liked the contrasts before.

The one before was a bit, as you say, tacky. It needed better shading.

Try and shade the new pods more. The style is nice, but the color is a bit lacking.

Yes, Shading would be nice. Maybe a highlight boost too in Photoshop?

Maybe spiral side vents,that would look cool. I also think the side sprite looks too thin

Just a tad too heavy shading, but an improvement...try varying the lighting in the map to see how it looks in high/mid/low light.

And yeah, it seems like the shading went a little too much...don't make the tips black. Just dark gray/grey.
