Using the DooM Editing tools in Windows Vista

Note to admins: You may want to sticky this so that anyone switching to Vista will know how to use the Doom editing tools in it.

DooM Builder:

Because Windows Vista is not so friendly to "classic" Windows applications, you need some manual changes to your Doom Builder installation to get it to work in Vista. Here they are, thanks to Mechadon.

1) Install Doom Builder in a directory OTHER than "Program Files".

2) Download this DLL file and unzip it to your Doom Builder directory.

3) Find Builder.exe where you installed Doom Builder, right-click it and choose "Properties". In the "Compatability" tab, check the box that says "Run this program in compatiblity mode for:" and choose "WinXP (SP2)" from the drop-down box.

4) For people experiencing an "Error 5 - Invalid procedure call or argument" error on Windows Vista, please read tannermann's solution.

Now you should be able to use Doom Builder on Windows Vista, enjoy.

XWE:

I was having MAJOR problems with this until I went on Doomworld forums to find how to fix it. Suprisingly, this is only a very minor fix.

*Go to XWE's .ini file
*Open it, and go to the following lines:

Code: [Select]
(OPTIONS)
NOREGISTRY=0

*Change that to a 1

That's all you need to do. If you are having problems with XWE and you're NOT an admin on your computer, this is also another easy fix; just change the 1 to a 0

Enjoy.
-Catman

Personal note: Also, make sure that you run it as an administrator if you continue having problems.  Right click on the XWE icon and click "Run as Administrator."

Several members with Vista computers that are having trouble with these programs are missing this topic, so I am going to give it a sticky and rescue it from the necromancy pit.

Watch the name calling. I don't want to have to lock this, anyway.

On startup, it says it can't find an IWAD, then when I try and find a texture or manually find the IWAD for DB, it gives me a

I know what you're thinking. No, I don't like peanut butter.

If I had to choose between the real world or the Chex Quest Fan forums; I'd choose the Chex Quest fan forums.

Yeah, uh, Rep, I don't think that has anything to do with 75's problem...

Hey, mine does that too...I just set the IWAD before opening a file, then close, then open DB again and open the wad...usually works.
Don't remember me as I was...I was an idiot.

I suspect this is a vista problem... I still can't get GZdoom support in Doombuilder, even though the .cfg file is in the right directory.

Any ideas?

There are several GZDooM mapping configurations.  I'm not an authority on what they are, but look around in your configuration list and look for anything that wasn't there before.

Also, you must restart DooM Builder for any new configuration files to be found.

I think this should go in Tutorials.
