Chex Quest: Ragnarok
« on: May 29, 2010, 01:59:43 AM »
UPDATE: Name of Mod will be decided within the next 48 Hours (As of 5:16 PM CDT) - (See below posts for details) - Name of Project is now Chex Quest: Ragnarok.

100 years after what was thought to be the Flemoids' Last Attempt of an Invasion, the Flemoids return to Ralston to wreak havoc on the Cereal Population. The Flemoids have not only taken over the Capital of Ralston, Frumentum, but the Flemoids have also taken control of the IFOC Space Satellite, which transmits mayday/emergency signals to other cereal-inhabited planets, leaving Ralston to fight for itself in an all out war. The Flemoids have evolved slightly and are much more powerful than before. You will play as (This name is yet to be determined XD). You and the Chex Warrior Army must repel the Flemoids from Ralston and restore The IFOC Satellite before the Flemoids plunder Ralston of all of it's nutrients and minerals.

To do this, you must venture far below undeground and destroy the Nest: An area that speeds up the Flemoid Reproduction. Then you must travel to the IFOC Satellite and zorch all of the flemoids and get the Satellite working. You will then later pickup a Zorch Nuke from a laboratory, and finally, you will have to face the Mastermind himself and detonate the Zorch Nuke near all of the Flemoid Nests.

I have some maps done on this, and I am trying to develop a Sniper Zorcher (Sniper Rifle) for the WAD. Here are some Screens. May Release a Beta soon.

Swimming through a Lake of Slime.

looks neat! I see you've done a pretty detailed job with the city, and the room with the cabinets looks good too, even though right now it looks more like a grocery store or store-house. Libraries look kind of funny with glass in front of the books, and I can't say I've ever seen a library with a metal floor and black ceiling, but if that's what you're going for, sure.

If you wanted, you could put two shelve patches on top of each other to make it even better

The slime lake looks kind of funny, with the rock textures around it. Why not use a sky above it, and some line horizon in the distance, after a fence or something? Unless you want it to be deep in a crater. The terrain under the water looks good.

Try varying your textures on that pink staircase, it's kind of hard to tell what's going on. Maybe alternate between two, or use some sort of railing or thing to set the different stair sets apart?

Spiral staircase looks fine, but it really depends on where that door goes, so I can't really give you much feedback on just the staircase. Maybe consider a different texture for the front of the steps, or making the steps a bit bigger, you're clipping a line of bricks.

How did those chex warriors get on top of those buildings? Do they have jetpacks?  XD

Try adding some detail to the roof, like a staircase leading up to the roof. Just a box with a door texture on the front would probably be good enough. Not to mention, your buildings have no doors or windows you can see through. With 3d floors, you can make an entire office building you can go into, and walk on every floor (not that you should do that just to have every window see-through XD)

There are also a few other things to note:

-Most Flemoids are much faster and stronger now
-Cycloptis and Stridicus are EXTREMELY FAST.
-Maximus is much harder too Zorch
The Quadrumpus has a lot more health, but now moves a bit slower
Larvae are fast but can be zorched easily
Flem Mines do massive damage but are zorched easily

Slimeballs are faster too.

I'd say the Library would be more like an Archive.

The Lake of Slime is actually underground, which is where you travel in the Mission before it.

I don't know about those stairs. I'll find something to solve that problem.

I think I'll put some boxs with door textures and maybe on the roofed buildings but a box with a door so it makes more sense. Also, the Chex Warriors fall of the roofs sometimes XD

if you don't want them to fall off, put a linedef action "block monsters" on the lines around the building

And you might want to have a little edge on the roof, a raised border. Most high rise buildings have a border and a black tar roof. There's a very nice black texture in chex3. wad you could use for the tar floor of the roof.

Maybe put some fans on the roof, too, more boxes that look like AC units with fans on the sides or on the top, you could even use that grate texture to make a ventilation duct so that some spy from a cheezy movie can get in your building!

I'm right now creating a level that is a Cellar, proceeding E2M1 (Temple - The level with the staircases) - It is going to be very similar to Storage Facility, as there will be storage shelves, Wine Cellars, and Storage Rooms for CHEX Crates. (There is also an Easter Egg in this level similar to the Easter Egg in Storage Facility)  :D

By the way, does anyone have any advice for creating Items and Weapons? May make an Enemy or Two.

Base your code on existing stuff.

For a monster, base it off of this http://zdoom.org/wiki/Category:Monster
And for Weapons, use this http://zdoom.org/wiki/Category:Weapon

Thank you for the codes Nomekop  :) I've been using the ZDoom Wiki for help. Well, I will get back to work on my mod on Tuesday (Not at my computer for the time being that has all of the programs and the WAD, etc. I think I have an idea of what the name of the mod is going to be.

Ragnarok, for sure. Sounds awesome. And those screens are amazing. ;)

Yeah, I liked Ragnarok and The Flemoid Crusades the best out of my options. I think Ragnarok will suit better.  ;D

And about the screens of the city: In the level that occurs in, you just look out from a window and see all of this, you do not get to explore that area (Unless you turn off Clipping or type in charlesjacobi ;D) . One problem with the marines is that when they are slimed, their corpses are shown with with Grey Slime instead of Green.

I am also working on Secret Sectors and fixing the trim around locked doors, lower unpegging the impassible linedefs in doorways.

Also, through that door at the top of that spiral staircase is a hallway leading to a room with the same architecture as the round hydroponics room in Arboretum (Because it is the same room!). I am going to retexture the room with Temple Textures.

That Library/Archive is like a maze and is Symmetrical (COUGHCOUGHEXCEPTCOUGHFORTHEAIRVENTCOUGHSECRETCOUGHCOUGH)  ;D

The Healing Pool in E2M1 Restores health slowly, has a Rapid Zorcher in the Middle, and has Slime Repellents which may be removed later on in place for Super Chex Armor as a Secret in that area.

Ah Yes, also keep in mind that some "Walls" are transparent, and may hide secrets.  :o

transparent walls wouldn't hide anything  ;)

I think you mean holographic walls

By Transparent, I mean you can barely see through but if you look at it at a certain angle, you can tell there is something on the other side of the wall. I used the Linedef action for Wall Transparency (I think the number is 120 on Doom Builder) and set it to 128.

By the looks of the sprite rip, you're probably using gimp... what I would recommend is zooming in very close and manually recoloring or erasing that pixel fringe. The good news is that it's not very high resolution (unless you're using scaled sprites) so it won't take too long.
