dude, you can make the repeat very well WITH the border, if you just get rid of the shadows, and play around with the offsets in editor.

yeah, I know... I've had ideas for the rest of the map for quite some time but I didn't want to move on without the boss

when that happens in mine, I just leave a replacement and come back to it later, so I don't lose my ideas for the rest of the level.

but then again, mine end up being rough drafts of the entire level instead of completed versions of parts of the level.  :-\

that's not a bad way to work, better to have a rough draft of the whole level than only having 50 feet of extreme detail.

However... I didn't want to release MAP03 with lame boss replacements.

and now, I present to you, my Act 1 boss concept for MAP03



It's kind of ugly at the moment, still working on it. Getting his chest right is proving to be really difficult.

It's less ugly if you zoom it in about 5 times, so you can see the detail on his hat and his scoder (scowder?), but still, it needs a bit of work before I start working on rotations, firing states, pain states, death states, and walking states.

Sounds like a lot, but once I get a good picture of what he's going to look like, it will actually go really quickly. If you have a good first sprite, the rest is pretty easy.

EDIT - better version

the right arm only looks funny when it's small.



and, even better yet. He's a different breed of flemoid, so his slime has a bit of a pattern to it

I really need to do something about his nose... it messes up his whole expression

I tried taking the nose off completely, but that makes his face look really weird... makes him look like a worm or something... gross.

I'm going to wait for some feedback on this before I start doing rotations.

I'm working on the zorch gloves in the meantime. I'm going to scrap the ABC states and instead start it in the D state. I'll post an example in a bit. tomorrow

well, lets see...

i'd say it looks pretty good except for the chest and face. The chest definately needs more shading. And the face could use some more shade variation too (more like the bottom). The eyes look pretty good, but just not quite right. Is that supposed to be some sort of techno aiming thing on his right eye? And whats with the hat?

The face looks funny probably because of the nose

yeah, that's supposed to be an aiming device. And that's his left eye, by the way.

As for the hat... I thought he looked funny bald  XD

Also, since he's an officer, I figured he should have something to differentiate him from the rest of the troops. If you think it looks too funny, I'll get rid of it, I could live without it.

looks great.

hat just looks funny cause of that bright blue stripe. maybe green?
and don't forget to shade the chest (like so that one area isn't all one shade [it looks too cartoony])
also, I would make those lines on the bottom and arm a little lighter. they stand out too much

Yeah, the nose on your flemoid is almost all one solid color straight down the middle. Shade around a little.

I think my technique lacking, it takes too long to make monsters.

in the meantime, I'm going to work on the zorch gloves, it seems to be a lot easier to make them look good.
