Your Ideal Space
« on: August 14, 2010, 11:42:36 PM »
Was looking at some things, and wondered what your ideal 'space' would be...

Like, say you had a pretty big room. Not a square, but more like a rectangle. 2 windows on one wall, a closet on the other. What would be in it that would make it the place you could work, relax, and sleep in?

For me, I'd have an entertainment center on the short wall, with one of the analog HD TVs in it, as well as an old style radio set, with Reel-to-Reel, Cassette, 8-Track, Record, and an 80s CD player. All in 4 speaker stereo. Also, a line in from my computer, sporting dual high resolution monitors on a perfectly powered gaming computer, with all my music and stuff in digital, as well as in copies on the various mediums listed above. One of those beds that has a desk built into the side and shelves under it for holding 2 older computers (an old Mac, and a old PC) and accessories. Add in high speed internet, and a small recording area with a few HD video cameras. Also somewhere fits a nice Yamaha or KORG keyboard, a MIDI drumkit, and a guitar (and possibly some how to play books XD), and tap it all together into the computers and the entertainment center system.

Then add one or two other people with good ideas and laptops, and work on DooM mods, making music, recording videos and working on special FX...and I could live in a place like that.

Or to ensure I could live in it, add a space for repairing computers, put an ad in the paper, and get me A+ certs...good to go.

I could go on and on and on and on...there are way too many things I could put in my room. XD

Dimly lit room, set at a frosty 60 degrees (yes, I like things cold, even in the winter) at all times.

Three custom-built rigs: one for gaming, one for Internet browsing, and one for general TF2 mapping and modding.
Then, a wall covered with monitors. COVERED. You can't tell what color the wall is, there are so many freaking monitors on there. Surround sound systems are hooked up to the rigs, so that you can game, fully and realistically.

On the other side of the room, a bookshelf with a bunch of various books that I enjoy, a loft bed, and a stereo system that shuffles various downloaded MP3 files from my hard drive. Maybe stick a keyboard under the loft bed, or something like that.

Oh yeah, and you can't forget the flat-screen TV, DVD player, and the entire selection of Studio Ghibli films underneath it.

In the closet goes a big folding table, some folding chairs, and a mini-fridge of Jones soda. Pull it all out, and instant LAN party. Amirite?

Oh man, ideally I will have a double-twin bed in one corner. Next to that I will have a floor lamp and dresser with some random stuff on it. I will have a filing cabinet in there filled with my projects and all sketches relating to said projects. On the dresser or near my computer I'm thinking I'll have one of those 5-in-1 media players (CD player, mp3 device input, am/fm radio, cassette player, and 3 speed turntable!)

On the far wall I'll have by "base", which will have at least 3 screens side by side (heck maybe one stacked on top of one) I'd like it to be superbly powerful but idk. Ideally I'd like it to be like my friend's who can run Crysis on medium high settings while downloading stuff while watching tv shows on a second screen with almost no lag. as long as it's powerful enough to play Portal, Starcraft 2, etc on average settings and be able to render 3D stuff easily (possibly even @ the same time) will be fine for me.

I'd also like to hook up a webcam, mic, a scanner, printer (or combination of the two), one of those digital drawing pads and probly throw in a few external hard drives here and there. Oh and I should not forget the speakers.

I'll also have a small bookshelf of the things I like to read (maybe some dvds if there arent enough) a big easychair and a large Whaleware poster on the wall.

I'd have a computer that could "run TWO copies of Half-Life 2. At. Once. And STILL have the memory left over for a game of Solitaire whilst. They. Load."

And it would have surround sound properly set up with speakers in optimal locations.

I'd have another PC on my left in case I want to be on the Internet while playing a game or something. A third one on my right running Windows 98SE, to play all those old classics. To the right at a 90-degree angle, an array holding all my CDs. To the right of that, DVDs. To the right of that, books.

On the left, 90 degrees off my Internet PC, a nice, comfortable bed. To the left of that, a good chair to read in. To the left of that, a refrigerator.

And of course, my desk is covered in all sorts of geeky paraphernalia.

Books everywhere.  Have the walls literally covered in books.  In the center of the room, I'd suspend a bed from the ceiling, with a flat-screen TV on the ceiling at an angle so that I can watch while laying down.  Then I'd tie the TV into an awesome computer that had a wireless mouse and keyboard. I'd install surround sound speakers and I think I'd even add in a disco ball.  And don't forget the Whaleware painting on ceiling. :whale

Oh yeah, and I'd reserve a corner for a small kitchenette.  Can you say "Easy Mac?" ;D

Well, I'd have a couple of these babies placed in separate corners, one for gaming and editing video/photography/special effects, and the other for Linux, coding, browsing, archiving, and some professional work. I'd find a way to connect both 3-monitor systems into a 6-monitor beast when I wanted to watch a movie. This is all on one side, mind.

On the other, I'd have all my instruments and recording equipment, with a Pro Tools-equipped Mac Pro, a sweet synth (a Roland or a Kurzweil, possibly), some guitars, basses, and maybe an upright piano, as well as a drum set. A surround sound entertainment system would also be included, of course, with some sweet studio monitors. The other two walls would be full of bookshelves, a fridge, a microwave, and a thermostat.

Awww yeahhh.

So sometime early last year at youth group the leader had everyone say their name and what piece of furniture they would be. I didn't really have a favorite piece of furniture, so the next day I designed a desk that combined as many of my interests as possible.

So it's got a speaker/subwoofer system, a huge TV for NASCAR, two racks of audio equipment consisting of a mixer, headphone amp, preamp strip, CD player, cassette player, DSP processor, a Line 6 POD XT Pro, a couple of amps, and a big honking power strip; it also, of course, includes a computer, with an audio interface for connecting to the sound system; there's also a drawing board, since I like drawing, and below that is a big tool chest for mechanics tools; and finally, a special shelf just for my favorite book series, Hank the Cowdog.

But, since that would never get built, and it probably wouldn't exactly what I want, here's more of my ideal space would have. I would have a pretty good comp, nothing really fancy, but maybe with two monitors; I would have my guitar(s once I get an acoustic) with a pedalboard along with a mic and it all connected via USB or Firewire interface to the computer; also a pair (plus subwoofer) of good studio monitors for doing audio work; also in the room I would want a table for drawing on, plus a bookshelf and our old recliner, which is in rough shape but I still love it. ;D  I'll probably think of more once I post this, but yeah.

Google Sketchup. I've made a lot of stuff in it, but nothing near as fancy as other people.
