Can a legacy mapper help me figure out TUCQ's teleporters?
« on: September 13, 2010, 10:48:44 PM »
I don't understand how they work, is it an animated texture? I don't see any frames, I must not be looking in the right place.

Do you mean the glowing things in the walls that are made with effect "8 - Light glows (1+ sec)"?

You mean the things floating up from the teleporter? I believe that's a thing but I don't see it in the dehacked lump. If you're referring to something else, I have no idea.

The sparkle effect is a modified Heretic Thing. I'm not at my computer, so I can't tell you what number it is. If you want, I'll look when I get back.

There's another Thing, which is one of the Doom firesticks (I forget which one, it might even be another Heretic glowy Thing) that has had its glow properties modified with FraggleScript. (Again, not sure of the exact parameters) And to make the glow beams, there's a pure cyan texture on all the linedefs around the pad. The glow lights them up even though they're otherwise invisible, giving that cool effect.

pure cyan? you mean completely invisible? I thought it was an animated texture.

Well... there's no way to do that in skulltag. I'll have to fake it with animated textures.

yeah there is. Just do what he said. Make a pure cyan texture. Place it where that is. Put a dynamic light on the teleporter. The glow on the dynamic light will show in the cyan texture.

It didn't work, it was completely invisible the entire time even though the dynamic light pulsed.

If you got it to work, send me a concept map.

Heh, even though it may be lacking in mapping features, Legacy's dynamic lights are darn cool. XD

Here's the DEHACKED snippet for the sparks:

Thing 200 (Tel. Spark Red 1)
ID # = 6074

Thing 201 (Tel. Spark Blue 1)
ID # = 6052

I'm unsure if there's some needed stuff down with all the Frames and Pointers stuff.

Hmm

Do you have the sprites to this thing? I'll just remake it in DECORATE.

As for dynamic lighting, I'm going to try to implement coronas.

i have got to stop opening my mouth before testing.

I have got to stop opening my mouth before testing.

Please do, it does more harm than good. A false lead presented as fact with no explanation is almost a waste of my time.

If you're not sure, say "try this, it might work, here's why" rather than "I know how to do it, do this".

If you tell me your reasoning, I might be able to work off of it even if the idea doesn't actually work.

It is better to test and to find it wrong, then to not test and not find out if it is possible or not.

You may be able to create a true color (PNG) semi-transparent cyan texture, in replace of a full cyan for GZDoom. (I'm not sure if skulltag has the true color support?)
I know what you're thinking. No, I don't like peanut butter.

If I had to choose between the real world or the Chex Quest Fan forums; I'd choose the Chex Quest fan forums.

Skulltag does have true color support in hardware mode. I'm not sure what would happen in sofware, I think it renders cyan as a very light grey, which would be acceptable for the teleporter.

Semi-transparency in the image is a very good idea, it's actually a lot easier than what I was thinking of doing.

I was thinking of having an opaque, animated texture then using Translucent Line, but making the images transparent in photoshop is a much better idea, since it gives me control over what parts are transparent in a given frame.

A rather hacky workaround for the legacy dynamic light effects, but it should still look cool if I experiment with it a bit.
