Breakfast Trek, aka "FreeChex"
« on: October 02, 2010, 07:20:12 PM »
So I was thinking about playing Chex Quest on other systems, (In a legal way, that is) and the thought occurred about FreeDoom, which can be legally ported to other systems, like these iPhone ports. So what if we made a version of Chex Quest with completely new textures, sprites, sounds, music and everything else built from scratch? Chex Quest, while considered abandonware, technically is still not completely legal to not own a copy of. (I believe?) Then there's also the fact that Chex symbols and stuff is laden everywhere, meaning the game would already have to be overhauled for a release not licensed by General Mills.

'Twould be cool, but the process of redoing everything in CQ seems quite daunting, and probably a turn-off is that it's already free, though it would be nice to be out of GM's hold. But weren't you trying to do this with the stolen CQ3? Whatever happened to that?

I did try that, but I lost interest as it was only working with stuff that already existed, plus I didn't have a working computer, AND the most up to date wad was lost in a virus attack. I may go back to it someday, but not now.

Some other things I would mention, so it isn't too close to the original game, do you guys think some main colors should be switched around? For example: black zorchers, green zorch, and purple flemoids. (All of which I've been contemplating, especially black zorchers)

Also, I'm working on some placeholder sound effects now, should be done by Monday. (I hope, don't quote me on that)

Maybe the zorchers could be prerendered models? Someone call Datra!

Some more stuff. The main character will now is a waffle instead of Chex, since they look pretty similar. I've nicknamed him Jim Waffleton. Also, I'm still going for different colored Flemoids, but purple won't cut it. Too little colors to work with plus it screws up when I try using XWE. (I know I know, switch to SLADE, but it isn't working for me, if you read the Tech Support topic) I'll try for another color, maybe yellow.

At first I was kind of  :facepalm about having non-green flemoids, but if you can make totally new everything for this, it will be awesome. Almost like a cheap knockoff of Chex Quest xD

And to be playable on iPhone? Yes!
Use the CQ IRC channel! (were it working...)

That computer map is just a recolored Chex Quest sprite and can't be used. Also maybe the flask I am not sure.

I support this greatly, btw.

While it may look like it is, I swear the computer map is a completely original piece of work. Look at the original sprite and compare them, I didn't simply recolor it. (I'd post the original but I'm at school right now)

Too little colors to work with

I'd recommend using a different pallete. Why not?
