Major network issue
« on: May 21, 2011, 11:54:20 PM »
OK! Situation: generic Motorola Surfboard cable modem and a D-Link DIR-655 router.

I've been hosting, on my computer, Minecraft and Mumble for awhile. Well, last night, it stopped hosting. SuperSearcher tried connecting using the dlinkddns.com address I had set up, but to no avail. Tonight, I wanted to try and fix it, so I went messing around with it, and cannot get it to work again for the life of me. In fact, pinging my supposed external IP Address times out. so something is wrong.

I thought you could reset the IP manually by leaving it unplugged, but I left it undone for 5 minutes and it still retained (supposedly) the same IP.

*sigh*

I need to get my hosting back up. But how? I don't even know what's wrong. The only thing that changed was me pulling a wireless card out. But that shouldn't have any effect, right? All my ports were forwarded to the wired connection (which is gigabit, mind). I just don't get it. Everything else works fine, the works. But this just won't host anymore.

I also tried to reset the router, but this thing wants to be walked though, hand-held though what should be an automated process (it was on my Linksys, just picked the settings from the modem itself instead of me having to tell it the hostname, dns server addresses, or other such stuff. (BTW, don't even think we have a host name or anything)

Obviously, the internet works, but I need that hosting ability, at least for mumble.

Help?

EDIT: Whats this? Mumble somehow works? MADNESS.

SS just tried everything, and while Mumble works and connects fine, Minecraft doesn't even register a connection attempt
and I still think its not reaching my internet.

You try ipconfig /release and ipconfig /renew in the command line?

Yes, but it 'failed'

Exact words: "The operation failed as no adapter is in the state permissible for this operation."

This happens for both release and renew.
Could this be happening because I removed my wireless card? <_>

And still the mystery of the perfectly fine Murmur server. SS just connected to it and we talked a bit the other night, while failing at eveything else.

I'm not too sure how helpful this will be but, I googled your problem. I found a website where a person asked the same thing, and got a few answers.

http://forums.techarena.in/networking-security/1244591.htm

The last person posted about XP, but it may work for whatever you're on. (Unless you have a mac then... ah... IDK anything about that.)
I know what you're thinking. No, I don't like peanut butter.

I had the exact same set-up as you just a year ago... a Motorola Surfboard and a D-Link DIR-655. If anything got cranky, I usually wiped the DIR-655 and started over. Soooo...

- Do you know if you're on the latest DIR-655 firmware?
- Do you know your ISP's hosting policy? It could be that they're trying to shut you out... :(
- Have you used a port forwarding checker to make sure that all the ports are forwarding properly? Even if it did work before, just a good thing to rule out nonetheless.
- Have you checked that the dlinkddns service shows as being up on your router? Have you logged into the dlinkddns site and checked on that end?
- Triple check your firewalls.
- Doesn't Minecraft have some goofy tie-in with Java? I guess make sure your Java is up to date as well.

Yes, but it 'failed'

Exact words: "The operation failed as no adapter is in the state permissible for this operation."

For that, run as admin:

(Resets WINSOCK entries)
netsh winsock reset catalog

(Resets TCP/IP stack)
netsh int ip reset reset.log

Then reboot machine.

Edit: Oops, Replica just posted a site with the same sort of directions. So yes, totally legit solution right here. Hope it works for this particular error. As for Minecraft... I'll be back later with more questions.

Currently chatting at richie, so can't discon my internet ATM, but firewalls...Avast has been going insane. I try to run an installer, and it won't let me run it till I change some options. Maybe its messing with something?

And hosting policy...I've looked everywhere and even asked a guy there, and there is no mention of anything like that. And I've been hosting/constant downloading stuff for ages. Weird that only now at such a random (and actually, low traffic) time they would cut it out.

I'm on the latest firmware unless the little update checker tool can't find updates.

dlinkddns.com stuff, yes, I've checked, its still pointing to my address, and my router has all my information entered correctly. And as I told you, I have 3 different addresses, all with the same results.

I tried the port checker. Says its all blocked. Pinging my IP has the same problems, in fact says it doesn't exist. O_o

It sounds like you've got some port forwarding drama to deal with. If all settings are correct on router and the ports are open on the hosting PC, do you think Avast! is doing something bizarre?  :-\

I'd check the D-Link website just to be sure. That stupid update checker never did work for me.

Heh, you'll never believe it.

Steps taken after that post:
1. cmdline things
2. reset internal static IP
3. Launch minecraft
4. Check ports.

It works, in theory. What the heck...
EDIT: Just pinged my ip, no response...hmm

EDIT2: HMM. Curious...I just checked ports on my 3 DNS servers, and only 1 goes through. The two provided by DYNDNS (dyndns and dlinkddns) don't work.

Edit3: I think I just figured it. Somehow it got pointed at 255.255.255.255 instead...

Ha ha, your network sure is full of drama. XD Getting pointed to a subnet mask IP is definitely no good. Whats up with those dynamic DNS services? To clarify, which ones don't work? I'm reading it wrong, I think. I've always stuck with the D-Link DNS as the only DNS service I use because it is most directly tied to the router and most easily monitored. Not sure if that's one of your good ones though.

- Are you pinging your internal or external IP?
- The host/server PC has a static IP, right? Assigned from the DIR-655?

To clarify: I think it works now. Waiting on someone to try and join to see if it does...
Wait, you got MC don't you? XD

I used the Dlinkddns, then went to see if maybe it was wrong and went to dyndns.org. It appears that the two are linked, because it logged me in automatically to dyndns and showed that I had both a dyndns and a dlinkddns on the same account. when it still didn't work, I reset my servegame.com address to make it work again, but it had the same problem.

Now, all of them are pointing to my open ports, and I can see the query come into the minecraft console.

I'm pinging the external IP (and my DNS addresses) with the same timed out response, but it means nothing right now, eh?
And yes my computer has a static IP, but not assigned from the router...I'm using the configuration of the TCP/IP properties within windows, and I've just chosen an address slightly above the max number of devices we'd have online at one time. I've got my printer at 110, and my computer at 111, and the other computers/devices are all dynamic starting at 100. But we'd only have 3 things other than my computer and printer running on the network at once, so there's no conflict.

Edit: Yeah, it works. Super just tried, but of course, only the dlinkddns.com one works for him ><;

who cares, as long as it works from now on, I'll be happy.

If you have any future random connectivity issues, maybe try reserving the static IP from the router's end. Glad things are working though!

Oh, and I still need to get MC on this Mac. Just have it on the Sager so far! XD
