Noob's Editing topic
« on: May 03, 2011, 09:14:35 PM »
Well, Replica's GZDoom guide got me started, and got me started well... but, I'm such a noob so... I have to ask some noobish questions. (btw i'm making a mod) :facepalm

1. How do you put multiple textures on one linedef?
2. How do you make the sky?
3. Can you have two maps open at once in DB2? How?
4. My mod is for chex3.wad, and I can't find the cycloptis/larva to place as Things, how would I do that?
5. How do you make 3d water?

(probably many more to follow.)

My tutorials aren't done and they shall answer all these questions.

1. You can place a texture on different sections of a line, but you cannot place more then one texture on one. This guide explains it. http://www.chexquest.org/index.php?topic=2526.0

You'll have to make a new linedef to add a new texture to it... play around with it and you'll see what I mean.

2. If I remember correctly, you simply need to write the ceiling and or floor F_SKY1 texture. (Or whatever you find close to that.) To add sky to the walls, remove the texture of the wall all together by putting a "-" in the texture name slot. Note that the ceiling touching the wall will need the sky texture as the ceiling or floor.

3. Yes but, you'll have to open the EXE file twice. (Open doombuilder, lower it, open it again, and you'll have to on your desktop.)

4. Larva is 9050 and Cycloptis is 58. (AKA Stealth Arachnotron and Spectre)

5. I planned to make a tutorial on this, but for now, 75 made one. http://www.chexquest.org/index.php?topic=2740.0

Huh?? but how do you put a texture above a door? or do you have to inset it? That's what I'm trying to do.

Inset it

like this:

====     ====
        |==|
====     ====

EDIT:

different textures on  one line means you can place one on a bottom ledge, top overhang, and/or in the middle (possibly walkthroughable) one-sided walls can only have the middle.

That was explained in the tutorial. You did re-read it right? Follow the steps given and when you reach the texture slots; upper texture is the top texture and lower is the bottom texture. (Better explanation in the guide.)

you have to recess doors into walls, if you want to have a texture above them.

1. how do you draw a new linedef with an endpoint on an existing linedef? cuz when I right-click the existing linedef it just brings up the "edit linedef" box, when I actually want to draw a new one.

2.can you draw linedefs with endpoints not on the grid? like, say I want to make a 16x128 sector.

1. Use the Vertex tool and right click. There are three dots on its picture; you can simply press 'v' and you'll switch to that mode. Use that and right click instead.

2. Unclick the to grid button. It is the first button you see in this picture.

a second option is to use Insert. While using the line tool, pressing insert will start a new line, even if hovering above another one.

and you can always just change the grid size; its down there as well. I find it easier to do that then just completely get rid of the grid.

I don't recommend getting rid of the grid, I remember somebody mentioning on the zDoom forums that the engine doesn't like non-integer (non-whole number) vertiicies, instead use the [ and ] keys to make the grid bigger or smaller.
