Demo 1 Progress Check

I know this is the part nobody likes: work. But if we all think, "Hmm, let's let someone else do something.", then this project will never be finished and we will never have our own free chex. This is just a progress check- post any work you have completed here. I'll post my work too.
We all need to work together. It seems like a lot, but if we work together we'll get it all done. You don't need to do hours and hours of work- in fact, don't do that. But it'd be really nice for the whole project if everyone just contributed a little bit.

Here's my contribution for now (I'm going to cover most of the game's music, I guess)

Well, I think we need to completely redesign all the textures and not just edit out Chex. Thats what freedoom did.

I'm probably gonna need at least a partially completed IWAD to work off of before I can begin any maps...

The textures will all be pretty similar in the final version, and so will the weapons and power, etc. We can do minor edits once the textures are all done and stuff but the main part of what level design is stays the same.

If we put everything off until everything is finished, nothings going to happen.

Just make a map for the Original Chex Quest and submit it, if needed we can touch it up a bit to match the slightly different graphics.

Also here are some new textures.

Isn't Breakfast Trek supposed to be a free from Copyright ChexQuest? If the textures aren't similar, then it isn't Free Chex Quest, it is just another total conversion of Doom.

I agree. They need to be similar, but different.

However, arch, your current stuff (save for DAT TELEPORTAL) looks too close to the original chex...Especially that door key panel. Those small details are the things we have the liberty to reinvent as we see fit, so just recreating them is not the best thing to do.

  • Any specific conventions or scenery I should put in?
  • It should be landing pad like, right?
  • So, what kind of monsters? That might affect how I design some stuff.
  • And, whats the main character and similar characters going to be like? I should know a basis of what things should look like. (based on culture)

I didn't say everything is 100% different, but it is not a free chex if we just photoshop "chex" out of every single texture.

Arch- Those are excellent, except for the 3rd one. It looks exactly like the one in Chex, could you make it a bit different? The others are amazing, and look just like Chex's style!

CM2109-
Make the level like a normal level. You have creative freedom, so if you want there to be scenery, go for it. You're the expert at mapmaking here. :)

Yeah, a landing pad level.

Monsters- probably some of the easy monsters, this is the first level. Don't go as crazy hard as Chex 3's first level, we should start easier and end harder since we have more levels for a difficulty curve.

Characters will be waffles, the monsters will be blue, and textures will be redone. Other than that, its mostly the same. We don't have a story figured out, but it'll be in the same style as Chex, most likely.

Texture request:

An airlock that has a finely determined boundary down the middle (for use with polyobjects).


Also, I had an idea for the monsters, since were going with a blue theme; electric  monsters! Say, pet robots that rebelled, or something like that.

The problem with a non-slime based enemy is that it makes many of the textures a moot point and would require weapons that are harmful to fight them with. The whole point of the original CQ was a shooter that was completely non-violent.
