Help Building a New Compy
« on: July 30, 2012, 06:44:35 PM »
Alright, so i'm gonna build my own new compy. Just one problem: never done it before, and don't quite know what i'm doing. I wouldn't say i'm a brand new newbie, but I'm gonna need some help.

First of all, the parts. Atm, i'm focusing on the major stuff (ie mobo, processor, memory, video card). I have a cd-rom drive and hard drive to use, as well as (i think) a case, and the minor stuff like ports and whatnot. I have a fan and power supply, but I don't really have their stats atm. If anyone wants to look them up though, the computer their from is an Acer Aspire 1200 series AX1200-U1711A.

So, what I need, atm, is help finding a mobo, processor, and video card. I've already found some memory, which I'll post. If anyone finds anything cheaper and better, let me know. And yes, I'm trying to go for cheap yet good here.

Parts list (i'll update this as we go):

MEMORY
I want 8 Gigs
Possibilities:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231416
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231314
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820145345

Chosen:   http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231314

MOTHERBOARD
I want something decent, but still not too pricey.
Possibilites:

Chosen:    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128546

PROCESSOR
I want at least 3.something Ghz. Basically, best bang for buck.
Possibilites:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819116737
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115077
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115092

Chosen:  http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819116505

VIDEO CARD
nVidia 560 1GB

Chosen:   http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130685

CASE
I think I have one that may or may not work, but that's not a definite. If anyone finds one for a decent, small price, please let me know.

PSU
Antec 750 watt ATX12V
135mm fan
80 PLUS certified
etc

So, whatcha all got?

EDIT:
k, my B-days coming up, i usually get about the following amounts spent on me:

20$ -
20$ -
20$ -
50$ - Memory
100$ - prob Processor (can be flexed up just a little)

Um, exactly how much $ are we talking total? $210's not gonna buy you a whole lot.

I'd go with G.Skill on the RAM, as they have rockin' customer service and fast sticks. The Sniper/Ripjaws are the same exact thing but the Sniper is $5 off if you order in the next couple days.

Gigabyte and MSI both make good motherboards (MSI's a little cheaper I think). What kind of fan/power supply? If it's ATX/micro-ATX there's a wealth of choices for mobo's.

CPU: Intel is best, but AMD is cheaper. AMD makes reliable chips but Intel is faster. Maybe an i3? Those are very nice.

Video card: I haven't kept up with GPUs lately, but reviews on Newegg will help a lot in terms of what's good these days.

So mostly just estimates here but there's a bit of a sketch from me on what to look out for.

Alrighty, thats good to know. I'll probably go with G.Skill then. I'm not limited to $210, that's just from my coming B-Day. I have a $100 of my own atm, and can get more. Pricing is pretty much ok as long as things dont get past $400-500. I'm probably gonna go with an Intel chip. I think I'm gonna try and do the motherboard last, so as to select one that fits everything else. If I can't, I'll just take the closest match and tailor the rest XD

Cool. You should be able to net some good parts, then.

Just added some processor possibilities. Holy Cow video cards are expensive o_O I don't really know what I'm doing in that alley, so... anyone? XD I want something that can run Skyrim or something flawlessly, but still be cheap (under or around 200, much preferred to be way under XD)

my random note:

Even at lower speeds, a Quad core i5 might run a little better for you than a fast duo. It's helped in my situation (not to mention overclocking...i5's are nice overclockers).

Anyways, I would suggest getting something in the mid 500 series, nVidia. if you go for AMD...get AMD XD.

There's an option, probably not the best, but its good. You can always back off some, but not too much. My GFX card is my bottleneck on my build ATM...

Yeah, from my quick look, I thought a mid-500 series might be good, glad to know my intuition was correct. I think I saw a 2 GB one for less though... (btw, whats that mean for a video card?)

As for the quad-core; yeah I was thinking the same thing.

2 GB on your GPU is basically the maximum bandwidth on your video card. You won't be running into scenarios where you need 2 gigs unless you're gaming at 1920x1080 or higher usually.

Also like Atarian said, clock speed isn't everything. You can look at the prices for a lower-speed i5 and see what the difference is.

That's the card I have. Runs everything like a boss. (Only thing it chokes on is Skyrim with ultra settings + HD pack. A 2GB card would probably handle that better.)

Okay, so I started looking at it...and the prices you can get a fast Duo is very nice compared to a slightly slower quad. In fact, the lowest quad i5 is 180:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115089

TBH, may be worth it. I would say that my 2GHz i7 in my G73 (laptop) is just as 'fast' as a 3GHz dual core. Its amazingly more powerful, but just as fast. Getting a near 3Ghz quad is very noice, but if it doesn't fit the budget, almost any decent speed i3 is good.

Just a personal feeling but whatever processor socket you settle on, try and find a GOOD quality Gigabyte board for it. Yet to beat em in terms of quality.

hmm... ouch... but I think I can stretch that far. Might take a little bit longer to get it though... alright, that one looks good though. Definitely about what I want.

Just wanted to stop in and say that if you want to run GzDoom, you should not get a ATI video card or Intel HD Graphics (or you'll likely have EXTREME FX). My NVidia cards are working fine, I did have one ATI video card that worked fine, but I wouldn't take that chance again.

XD That's exactly why I prefer nVidia 75. GZDoom doesn't like ATI or Intel :(

Hmm...

I think I'm just gonna save up and get this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819116505

After all, I'm gonna want something that'll last me for a bit, so it better be fairly nice.

Also, whats the difference between "Sandy Bridge", "Ivy Bridge" and all that?

One more thing, I was thinking about getting some LED lights, just for fun: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16800888052
What are your guys' opinions?
