DeiMWolf Bayonet: Stab or Thrust?
« on: February 17, 2015, 07:48:25 PM »
I was rendering the statusbar icon for the bayonet in DeiMWolf today, and that got me to thinking about the way the bayonet can be held and used when I finally get around to doing the first person sprites for it.

In Wolfenstein 3D the player holds his knife like a sword and thrusts with it.

Is this the way I should depict the K98 bayonet being used?

While the Mauser K98 bayonet has an impressive 10 inch blade and can probably be used like a sword, it could also be held and used in a stabbing motion like this.

So the question is whether I should depict the bayonet being held like a sword and thrusted as in the original game, or if I should have the bayonet held and used in a stabbing motion.

What do you think?

I was thinking more like this:
ftp://0713site.serveftp.com/pics/misc/stab.jpg
have it swing outward from left to right.

Well, according to this video from a WW2 Commando, it should be some variation of the thrust.

Would hate to see B.J. get his arm broke from bad technique!
Did we really just spend the last decade talking about Chex Quest? Yes. Yes we did.

Stab would be coolor, but I feel thrust is easier and makes more sense.
Shh!  I'm taking a break from reality.

Well when B.J was in the 8 bit era he looked like a stick figure but in Wolf 3D he looks like a Allies Soldier and I would think stab would be cooler. Even the Spy in TF2 uses it.

I don't play TF2, so I wouldn't know that.

I have an idea why don't we make thrust primary and stab secondary.

That would be kinda hard, but an alt fire is possible. Maybe Boingo could do it...

So why don't we even it Thrust is fast but it is weak and stab is slow but strong.

I would agree with an alt fire though I don't condone violence, in my experience an alt fire is easy to code (at least in ZDoom) and if he could do the sprites for either, he could do it for both. It would add an interesting gameplay aspect, in my opinion.

I've never used alt fire, but it might be cool to use as well for some weapons I'm making.

It has been two weeks, and there have been no new votes in at least a week, so it looks like it is time to call it ...

... and it looks like the winner is ...

(Drum roll please)

THRUST! (by a hefty margin)

<<Thrust takes to the podium to accept this award.

Thrust would like to thank the academy, and all the people who voted for him. He would also like to thank his parents, his girlfriend, and his agent.

This is truly a great honour.>>
