Bypassing word filters?
« on: April 09, 2016, 12:56:04 AM »
So I've seen some people bypass word filters on other forums somehow by writing certain swear words without the usual censoring that happens if you write it normally. I'm assuming they slightly altered the unicode characters to contain an extra pixel or so, just wondering how this would exactly work.

Um, first of all, probably not something you should be asking about.

Second of all, they just rearrange letters or put in spaces. L i k e htis. Most word filters aren't actually very sophisticated, and will only censor the actual word itself, not any derivations that look similar.

And you can't just alter unicode characters. It doesn't work like that. A unicode character is just an ID number; what it actually looks like depends on the font. Even if you change the font though, it still has the same ID.
Shh!  I'm taking a break from reality.

I think this has to do with my posting "DAM* YOU RICK ASTLEY!" on the shout box earlier, and it being censored.  Of course I assumed it was going to be censored in the first place, so it is a non issue to me.

I really am not worried about the language filter, and I have no interest in trying to defeat it.

Just asking because I was wondering how it worked, since some of them don't have any extra spacing or anything when people write them but they're still uncensored.

Careful now...

I remember back in the day chatting with Brain Candy coming up with all kinds of workarounds for the filters, and adding those in. Obviously we didn't hit them all, but we did get quite a few. There used to be a fun topic in the admin area where we put the filter through its paces.

Still, don't go pushing it. This is still meant to be an all-ages place.
Did we really just spend the last decade talking about Chex Quest? Yes. Yes we did.

I regret nothing!

Fair enough Lore, sorry XD

And there are various ways to make censor filters more effective, using regex and other methods. It can be a long and complex topic though, so I'd recommend doing some research if your really interested.

I wasn't going to try it, just asking how it worked :P

I remember a long time ago when someone posted about the book Moby d*** and Manny Cav telling everyone he would hurt them in some way (I don't remember the exact details) if they used that as a workaround.
Then again, that workaround doesn't work anymore.
