I've transferred the domain and linode server to Acts19Quiz, right now the DNS change is processing, so the domain isn't quite working, but hopefully that will be resolved in the next few days

I'm planning on handing over ifocserv to Acts19Quiz, the domain and the server.

I guess it's a good thing I didn't end up hosting the CQFF.

Some things have changed in my life over the past year (all good things) and to be honest, I don't really play video games that much anymore. It wasn't an easy decision to hand over the server, I definitely have a lot of good memories playing Doom/chex on there and hopefully you do too!

I think the server will be in better hands with somebody like Acts19Quiz who actually plays the games sometimes. I don't have a switchover date right now, but it should be happening pretty soon.

There shouldn't be any loss of files on the ftp, but there might be a bit of downtime while I transfer the linode and the domain name to him.

TEXTURES

SKIES AND BACKGROUNDS

Sky (knik1985) https://opengameart.org/content/sky-7 A dark stormy sky and some light puffy clouds that might look good in a skybox.

EVERYTHING ELSE

Zortch Unused Textures (mutantleg) https://opengameart.org/content/zortch-unused-textures Despite the title, most of these textures would be more at home in DooM than Chex Quest but many may be useful.

Zortch Unused Textures 2 (mutantleg) https://opengameart.org/content/zortch-unused-textures-2 As above these tend to be more DooMish than Chexy, but there are some nice computers.

Making your own stuff for CQ mods is hard, and swiping stuff from other people is bad juju.  >:(

There is a lot of public domain stuff on the internet, but it is in a variety of styles, most of which do not match the style of Chex Quest, and if it doesn't look or sound good in Chex Quest then it is not worth using.  :(

To make life easier, this thread is a list of public domain (CC0) graphics, music, and sounds that match the Chex Quest aesthetic or can be modified to do so.

Feel free to post anything else you find that is Chex Quest compatible.  Make absolutely sure it is in the public domain.

Whilst looking for a DooM meme called "WooD" (DooM logo upside-down, Marine with the chainsaw in a forest), I stumbled across a utility for DooM that generates tree sprites or voxels.  Since it can be useful for Chex Quest as well, I will add it here.

Scroll down to find the newest version.

  • Are some secrets only accessible one time or for a certain period of time?  There's one clearly visible door in E1M4 that I opened somehow once, but I couldn't do it when I played through the level again.  It has a message on a wall (what do they say, btw?).  And I couldn't figure out how to access a secret in the magenta key area of E1M5.
  • It seems like only the propulsor works on the final boss and only at certain times.  Plus, you have to line up the shots properly.  Am I wrong about any of that?

EDIT:
Oh, and the actual game that you can play in the arcade is a nice touch.  I didn't know that the Doom engine let you do things like that.  Is it a GZDoom- or Zandronum-specific feature?

  • Bazoik Revisited does not have any missable secrets. While there's a sort of timed secret in E1M3, you can reopen it after it closes if you miss it the first time. The message on the wall in E1M4 is a reference to a scene from the infamous CD-i game Hotel Mario. Notice that there's also toasters in the same room. As for the E1M5 secret, there's a hidden switch in the same room as the black switch box. Then you'll need to figure out how to open a hidden passage in the room after.
  • The final boss is only vulnerable when it raises its nose after attacking, and indeed only the propulsor works. It's essentially a variant of the Icon of Sin from Doom II.

And yes, the minigame is implemented using features that are exclusively in ZDoom-based ports, specifically the ACS scripting language and a bit of DECORATE.
