Computer Help!
« on: July 18, 2011, 05:14:55 PM »
Well, I got hit with what i'm assuming was a virus last night. Anyone heard of Vista Antispyware 2012? Anyways, i eventually found the little bugger in Local Appdata and macerated it.

It pretty much says ERROR! VIRUS ALERT! anytime you even open Internet Explorer. (And now, I suspect, any other program).

Well, now, after deleting the dang thing, anytime i try to run a program, it asks me what I want to open it with, like it was a file. I can still use Run as Administrator though.

Any help?
Shh!  I'm taking a break from reality.

Yeah, that's a virus. >.>

Sorry to say, but I really don't know what to do. All I can say is wipe your hard drive. :-\

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware: http://www.malwarebytes.org/

Use this. It's been a godsend to me at times and usually takes care of any problem like the one you mentioned. If this fails, however, try Spybot S&D as well.

Well, I ended up wiping and restoring. >_>

The main reason for this was that eventually I couldn't even use my browser. (Even Google Chrome failed on me, and it wasn't even directly attacked!)

All fixed now, just have to restore all the files that I lost, which shouldn't take long since I don't keep much on my main drive. (I learned from previous instances >_>)

I will probably look into that, however, CC, as I probably need something good.

I had a similar problem with Mal-ware before, and I ended up finding it in task manager and deactivating it. The only program that found it was Avast! which is the reason I only use avast now. (And I used all of the CC recommended programs, which didn't find it.)
I know what you're thinking. No, I don't like peanut butter.

If I had to choose between the real world or the Chex Quest Fan forums; I'd choose the Chex Quest fan forums.

is Avast! free? (or at least a free version) if so, can you give me a link.

I did the same thing, but it had already messed with the registry beyond repair; internet wasn't working and no executables were running (unless I ran them by using Run as Administrator).

Just to clarify, Avast found the deactivated program. I didn't have avast at the time.

True, depends whether the nasty application was a rootkit/trojan/virus, etc., so having a combination of antivirus software like Avast! and Malwarebytes for anti-malware is certainly a fine idea.
