DOSBox Chex
« on: July 16, 2008, 07:30:30 PM »
was looking through things, and found my original chex cd-rom
of course, no dos on windows 2000.
so i used this:
http://dosbox.com/
even better than chocolate doom. this is why:
make sure you have the original cd chex installed, to C:\Chex
if not, you can get it from boingo's tucq site, minus the movies. (u dont need the movies) but make sure you have chex.wad AND chex.exe and the .dll files that came with the original cd.
then boot up DOSbox, mount the C drive, go into the chex directory, and run chex.exe
ORIGINAL CHEX QUEST!!!!!
a set up from chocolate doom, cause it emulates chex.exe, not doom.exe
i dont know about multiplayer, but if it does it would certainly be a true vanilla chex experience

I've tried Chex Quest with DOSBox before. It's pretty good. Unfortunately, it's likely to fail in the multiplayer department like Chocolate Doom, as well. See the Chocolate Doom and Doomwire topic for details. I don't know how to do multiplayer with vanilla, anyway.

ah ok, i see your point.

as emulating chex.exe, chex quest 2 e1m1 crashes at red door :(

HERE YA GO, MULTIPLAYER FOR VANILLA!

doom -host 2 -warp 11 -skill 4
doom -join 192.168.0.1

the first creates a server for two at the hosts IP at level e1m1 and skill4
the second connects to the ip address. Which is the problem with that stuff...we're having to give out IP addresses. DOSBox is worse...not only do the chex.exe's need to be linked, but the two DOS VMs need to be linked, and this process is long, involved, and takes alot of hacking around with the config and junk...

I'd rather try chocolate doom

I know its not, its just having to connect the darn things together. Like this:

-open DOSBox with the real chex quest inside
-turn on the networking
-start a multiplayer game
-play
(easy, as this is the host)

-start DOSBox with the real chex quest inside.
-start the networking
-connect to the host computer
-start chex.exe in multiplayer connecting to hosts IP
-play
(a bit harder...I've got to enter the host IP twice...once for connecting the virtual network, and again for connecting the chex.exes...)

Unless we can get something (DWANGO, or something) to launch CQ easier, its a no go for me.

Plus, a test over LAN with CDooM and DooMwire worked, then I got it to work between my desktop and my laptop over the net using CDooM and DooMwire. I've never gotten chex.exe actually up into multiplayer, and I've only gotten doom.exe working twice.
Don't remember me as I was...I was an idiot.

Heh heh.  This is going nowhere.  Might as well lock it.
